Lauren Cho disappeared in June. Her case is getting renewed calls to action.

As awareness of missing person cases increases nationwide, friends and family of 30-year-old Lauren “El” Cho, who disappeared near Joshua Tree National Park in California in June, are asking people to bring the same energy to finding her.

“Where is my sister?!” a sibling posted on Facebook in August. Since early July, the family has run a page called “Missing Person: Lauren ‘El’ Cho” to raise awareness as they wait for updates from authorities.

“Someone knows what happened,” the post continued.

Cho, a resident of New Jersey, went missing on June 28 around 5 p.m. when she left her Airbnb on a remote, mountainous trail in Yucca Valley, California. Cho was traveling with her friends and ex-boyfriend, and they told police that when they last saw her, she walked away from the residence and into the desert with no food, water or cellphone.

Police conducted an aerial search almost a month later, on July 24, and on July 31 they searched the property where Cho had been staying. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told NBC Asian America that the search for Cho has never stopped, but the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division became involved this month after the local police had “exhausted their investigation.”

NJ woman who went on a road trip with her boyfriend has been missing for months

Nearly a year ago, a 30-year-old woman left New Jersey for a road trip with her boyfriend; she was reported missing in California in late June and search efforts have continued into the fall.

Lauren “El” Cho worked as an apprentice at Diamond Heart Studios before she left for her trip.

“She is a real person, with real friends & family here in New Jersey,” the tattoo studio posted on Instagram. “Keep advocating for her to be found. Don’t buy into the speculation. Keep searching and sharing.”

Beloved Chef, Baker, Singer and Tattoo Artist Lauren ‘El’ Cho Went Missing in California Desert After Cross-Country Trip With Boyfriend

“God damn it,” one side of her black-and-white Kurt Vonnegut tattoo stylized as the Ten Commandments reads, “You’ve got to be kind.”

Lauren “El” Cho was last seen wearing a yellow tee shirt and jean shorts just after 5:00 p.m. on June 28 at a series of Airbnbs called “The Whole” in Yucca Valley, Calif. where she was living and working as a chef.

The 30-year-old woman from New Jersey has been missing since then after taking that California trip with her then-boyfriend in late 2020.

According to the Hi-Desert Star, Cho and her by-then-just-friend Cory Orell were staying with the permission of The Whole’s owner, Tao Ruspoli, who the outlet described as “a filmmaker and musician who owns vacation rentals and is part of the community of artists and other bohemians living in Bombay Beach and the Hi-Desert.”

Cho and Orell had moved from the northeast to the Golden State together. Before she disappeared, the missing woman had purchased an old school bus and was in the process of converting it into a food truck — living as a chef and testing recipes doing private dinners.

“Lauren wanted a different life,” Orell told the Star in early July. “She wanted to move from the East Coast and taste freedom. She quit her job and moved into the bus with me. The idea was she was going to come here and open the food truck and follow her dreams.”

That dream came close to fruition in December of last year. Cho and Orell settled at Bombay Beach, an enclave of various artistically-inclined individuals near the Salton Sea — a shallow and saline body of water tucked into the southern edge of the Golden State between Imperial and Riverside Counties roughly two-and-half hours from San Diego.

On the day of her disappearance, Orell told the outlet that Cho was upset. She then got out of the bus and walked into the hills between Yucca Valley and Morongo Valley, specifically towards an area near Hoopa Road and Ben Mar Trail. Orell was the last known person to see her.

R.J. Okay was one of the friends Orell called to help look for Cho.

“I had seen her the night before, we had dinner the night before,” he told the Star in an early July interview about the missing woman. “I thought for sure she’d be back for dinner again that night.”

At 5:13 p.m., after a group of friends came up empty-handed, Orell called the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Morongo Basin Station. In that initial call to law enforcement, the woman’s friends said Cho hadn’t taken a phone, water, or any food with her.

“There was a 10-minute window there and she evaporated,” he told the outlet. “I searched all in the hills and no tracks, anywhere.”

The sheriff’s department mysteriously also couldn’t find any of Cho’s tracks — a particularly curious turn of events. According to another friend named Jeff Frost, Cho was wearing Doc Martens — a brand of combat-style boots with a unique sole pattern. That friend echoed the narrative that Cho was out of sorts when she vanished.

Lovely lady who was leading a fascinating life.

I’ve been to that area a couple of times as my ex was from there. There are so many mineshafts! Very near where Erin Corwin was killed. And though it’s pretty far from where the McStay family was buried, the terrain is similar.

'Someone knows something': Search renews for woman who disappeared from California Airbnb

Authorities and family members are seeking tips in the mysterious case of a woman who walked away from her California Airbnb and hasn't been seen since.

"Someone knows something. Maybe someone has seen something, and these pictures will jog their memory," Cho's sister wrote on the Find Lauren Cho Facebook page.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Mara Rodriguez told Inside Edition that Cho was staying at the rental with a group of friends and reportedly became "upset" over an unspecified issue. She then allegedly walked away from the rental without taking food, water or her phone and hasn't been heard from since. Cho was reported missing by her ex-boyfriend about three hours after she walked off. The ex-boyfriend indicated Cho may have been in "mental distress," according to police.

A search warrant was executed on the Benmar Trail residence on July 31 and repeated aerial searches in the "remote mountain terrain near the scene," yielded no clues, the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Office said in a recent update on the case. Foul play is not suspected.

"Just a gentle reminder that El is an actual person who is fiercely loved by many, and we see the posts, comments, and speculations made about her situation, her family, her friends, her mental health... One day, El's [relatives are] bound to come across all of this because nothing on the internet truly goes away," Cho's sister wrote on Facebook. "So continue to be respectful, good people. Continue to remember her name and that she hasn't been found yet and we need her home."

Never heard of this one which shows how some do not get much exposure. Just skimming the posts without reading the articles, it is confusing as to whether this was an ex-boyfriend or a boyfriend. Both are stated.

He was the last to see her and yet it hints as if others saw her leave but did they? Or are we talking minutes of a window. Meaning all friends saw her but five minutes later he alone saw her walk off? Or are we talking hours?

The last post says "foul play is not suspected". Well why not? She was upset and she has not been found or surfaced, I fail to see why foul play is not suspected??

The remark about how it was odd no prints were seen stands out. Big time.

Just an observation but what is it with national parks and some of these areas? I guess I come from such a midwest norm that things like camping, etc. are just normal people with nothing big to fear of crime, a murderer camping next to you or someone disappearing. I am at a point my daughter and fiance were going to camp state trails and campgrounds in Colorado a few years ago, I about threw a fit seeing what I do following some of these crimes. They didn't go but I doubt it was because of me... But thank goodness!

What I mean is this is near Joshua Tree. Although I have never been, I have heard of it many times. Petito they were doing Yellowstone and such areas although she also had an odd text about Yosemite. It seems like such areas attract a real unusual mix of people at times.

The other thing that kind of resonates here is with Petito it was the "van life" and this woman here had a dream of a "food truck". It mentions bohemian types which I think fits such things and areas? Often artsy, freedom loving, living life for the moment, camping, traveling... Am I wrong? I am not from for instance the west coast or these types of areas but I sure notice a lot of missing in such areas over years now.

What I do know is I notice a lot of people seem to go missing in national or state parks etc. to the states west of my home area... Whether foul play, hikers allegedly lost and missing, etc. We have a lot of state forests here and such and waterfalls and more but I never hear of such things occurring. I honestly don't hear much of such things on the east coast in such areas either. Is it due to population being rampant and warmer weather too and so many sights to see west of me?

An example is we have two women killed out by where Petito and Brian were and in the search for Gabby they found another man recently gone missing... All in recent weeks/month or two.

I don't like such strange coincidences. And while I would have used to dream of seeing some of these areas and national parks, etc., I don't think anyone could pay me to go to them now or travel such areas.

Just thoughts. A lot of 'em.

A plus--there is a focus on the missing right now and getting cases out there that are not getting the attention some others do. That's very much a good thing.

Detectives from the Morongo Basin station and search and rescue members served their search warrant at 6 a.m. Saturday at a property called The Whole in the 8600 block of Benmar Trail, Sgt. Eric Smoot said. He described the property as a collection of Airbnbs.

Seven dogs searched the last place where Cho was seen and surrounding areas for evidence, according to the sheriff’s station.

“We sought a search warrant due to the property owner not being present and multiple people on site living at the location,” Smoot said via email.

“This is the second search warrant served here. The additional searches we have conducted are based upon follow-up of investigative leads and resources available,” he said, adding the weather has not been favoring searchers.

A plane with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department searched the hilly terrain near the scene on July 24, according to the sheriff’s station. Investigators will hold more operations in the future as they develop leads, a news release states.

So despite no foul play suspected, this is a second search warrant. And she has been missing since June and it is October. Wow. I have certainly not been on crime for some of those months but never heard a word of this one.

Human remains found during search for missing New Jersey woman in Yucca Valley

Unidentified human remains were found in the open desert of Yucca Valley during a search and rescue operation in the ongoing effort to locate Lauren Cho, who disappeared in the area in June, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday, Oct. 10.

The remains were found on Saturday, Oct. 9, and were transported to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office to be processed to identify them and determine a cause of death, the Sheriff’s Department said. The identification process could take several weeks, officials said.

Determination of the cause and manner of death is pending toxicology results, the San Bernardino County Coroner's Division said in a news release Thursday.

"No further information will be released on this case until such time toxicology results are available and new information is discovered as a result."

Glad she has been found but sad at the outcome. Pretty clear they are not going to rush with a homicide or otherwise determination but instead wait for all results. I am trying to picture the uproar that would have created in the Gabby case. It sure does differ.
