Johnson’s family has long-suspected the teen was killed by classmates and theorized that their parents conspired with school and law enforcement officials to cover up his death. If authentic, the audio may be one of the first significant clues to emerge since the case’s reopening earlier this month by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators declined to comment on what's said in the audio but confirmed they’re now tracking down the individual who allegedly sold the tape to Johnson’s mother.

Kendrick Johnson’s parents to refile documentation for default judgment in $1B lawsuit

The parents of the late Kendrick Johnson, whose body was found in a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School, are once again requesting a default judgment be issued in their $1 billion federal lawsuit filed in September against the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

On October 13th, the Johnsons filed a request in federal court asking for a default judgment in their civil suit filed against the GBI and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

A default judgment is granted in a civil suit when the defendants named have not responded by the 21-day deadline. In this case, that would have been October 11, 2023, for the GBI, and Oct. 12, 2023, for the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, according to Johnson’s spokesperson.

However, a federal court judge denied that judgment request because the GBI and LCSO were not properly served with their suit.

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office sent out a statement, “The Johnson’s request incorrectly claimed that the GBI and LCSO had failed to plead or defend the suit under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. To the date, neither the GBI nor LCSO has been served with the suit.”

The Johnson’s attorney says that since filing the original lawsuit in September — the Johnsons have discovered additional evidence that could lead to two more defendants being named.

When WALB reached out to the GBI to ask if they had been served with a lawsuit from the Johnsons. This was their response:

“This matter is pending litigation and the GBI is represented by counsel. Responsive pleadings were filed on Friday, including a Motion to Dismiss based on insufficient process, insufficient service of process, and lack of personal jurisdiction, and further based on the Eleventh Amendment and the doctrine of sovereign immunity.”

10 yrs this has been debated. People are passionate on one side or the other. I have not kept up with the case. But know a little. Enough to say that his death is very mysteriously suspicious. It's a very creepy case to me. Something isn't right.
It isn't RIGHT I agree and we aren't even the parents. I don't know how they could ever rest with any assurance that it is right. And they can't. Quite clearly.

State Bar of Ga. dismisses complaint filed by Kendrick Johnson’s family

The State Bar of Georgia has dismissed a complaint filed by the family of Kendrick Johnson. The teen’s body was found inside a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School in 2013.

The complaint was against James Elliott who is the lead counsel for the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. The complaint stated that Elliott’s actions were inconsistent with the professional rules of conduct for the state of Georgia.

The State Bar of Georgia dismissed the complaint stating, “The evidentiary value of the documents included fail to support any grievance against Mr. Elliott.”

Elliott commented on the dismissal stating, “The dismissal of the complaint by the State Bar of Georgia is just the latest example of the Johnsons’ years’ long pattern of bringing baseless and unsubstantiated claims.”

Of course they did. No surprise is it?

What a nasty and intensely dislikable man.

Kendrick Johnson’s family vows to keep fighting for justice on his 29th birthday

The parents of Kendrick Johnson are celebrating their son’s 29th birthday, 12 years after his mysterious death.

“It still seems like it was yesterday, but everything is going okay,” says Kenneth Johnson, father of Kendrick Johnson.

After traveling to Washington D.C. in September, the Johnson family says they are doing all they can to bring as much awareness to this case as possible.

“We keep spreading his name and we have a lot going on right now within the courts and bringing awareness to keeping his name going, and we’re going to keep going until the right thing is done,” Johnson said.

The Johnsons say no matter how much time passes, they will continue to seek justice in proving that their son was murdered as they take this case nationwide.

“I will fight them to the day I die about my child, and like I always them, you killed the wrong child but y’all got the right parents because we’re not going anywhere,” said Jackie Johnson, Kendrick’s mother.

“No matter what someone tells you, follow your heart. If you know something is not right, say something.” Kenneth said.

Kendrick Johnson’s family holds peace walk for 12th Angelversary

January marks the 12th year since 17-year-old Kendrick “KJ” Johnson was found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School.

Kendrick Johnson’s parents tell WALB they are “keeping the torch lit to justice.”

On Saturday morning, friends and family gathered in Valdosta for a peace walk on the 12th anniversary of KJ’s tragic death.

“It is not okay what happened to Kendrick. We won’t be silent and we will continue to fight for justice for our son until it’s done,” said Kendrick’s mother, Jacquelyn.

The group marched through the city while shouting and chanting until they reached Lowndes High School. The same place where Kendrick lost his life 12 years ago.

“We are here to not just let the family know, but to let everyone know that when you touch one of us, you touch us all,” said Matt Israel, a Johnson Family supporter.

The Johnsons say they will continue organizing community events and bringing attention to their son’s death in hopes that no family will ever experience such a tragedy again.

“Our child is gone, so we continue to fight to make sure this does not happen to another family or another child. We want to make sure that no other family has to suffer like the Johnson family has been suffering for these past 12 years,” said Kendrick’s father, Kenneth.

Kendrick Johnson: Appeals court says family’s lawsuit should be looked at again

A Georgia appeals court ruled that a lawsuit filed by Kendrick Johnson’s family should be reviewed again after a judge dismissed it.

Jacquelyn and Kenneth Johnson filed a lawsuit in 2023 alleging a “conspiracy to violate their civil rights,” saying public records were kept from them.

The Johnsons filed two amended complaints, one of which was dismissed by U.S. District Court Judge Leigh Martin May. The family asked the judge to recuse herself from the case for bias, but the request was denied.

In a ruling issued on Feb. 21, the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit stated that May was in the right to not recuse herself. However, the three-judge panel also ruled that the amended complaint should not have been dismissed.

The lawsuit will now go back to the lower court.

Kendrick Johnson: Court denies lawsuit's dismissal in teen's gym mat death

A federal appeals court is asking a Georgia court to reconsider a ruling dismissing a lawsuit filed by the parents of a Valdosta teen found dead at his school over a decade ago.

The legal issues surrounding Johnson's death and the subsequent investigation have been going on for years. While a district court judge ruled that the family's lawsuit should be dismissed, the latest ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit said that the verdict should be reviewed.

Parents of South Georgia teen found dead inside gym mat file amended lawsuit

The parents of Kendrick Johnson, the South Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School in 2013, have filed an updated federal lawsuit.

According to court documents, the lawsuit challenges the findings listed on Johnson’s death certificate, which states he died from "accidental positional asphyxia." His parents, however, argue that conclusion has been scientifically disproven.

The amended suit accuses the Georgia Department of Public Health of violating the Civil Rights Act of 1871 and the 14th Amendment. Johnson’s death has long been the subject of national attention and scrutiny, as his family continues to push for accountability and a full reexamination of the case.

Georgia family's $1B federal lawsuit dismissed in case where teen son was found dead in gym mat

A family's $1 billion lawsuit against law enforcement and local agencies involved in the 2013 south Georgia death of Kendrick Johnson has been dismissed on various grounds, though a federal judge acknowledged "concern about the inconsistencies" in the case that linger more than a dozen years later.

The Johnson family has already filed notice of appeal, court records show, and in a statement issued Thursday assailed the dismissal as "unprecedented and unconstitutional."

The federal judge found the GBI could not be sued, as it is covered by sovereign immunity provisions as an "arm of the state." The action against the county, the judge determined, could not proceed because it had not been properly served.

The news companies succeeded in having the suit dismissed against them on multiple procedural grounds.

In addition to announcing they would appeal the decision, the family said they intended to file a complaint against Judge Geraghty and the federal district court in Atlanta, though what precise form that complaint would take was unclear. The family had filed a motion for the judge to recuse herself, which she denied. She wrote they "have not pointed to any extrajudicial source of bias."

In a statement, Kendrick's father Kenneth Johnson said, "If the message is not clear enough, let me make it clear as crystal right now, anyone, regardless of who you are, what position of power and influence you may hold, if you choose the join the murder cover-up scandal of my son Kendrick, you do so at your own peril."

Kendrick's death was accidental. I hope his family can find peace and put all of their pain behind them.

These lawsuits are never going anywhere and they keep the pain alive. It's time for the lawsuits to stop.
