Renewed plea for tips on boy missing in B.C., possibly with unidentified caretaker

Authorities are renewing their plea for information about an 11-year-old boy who went missing in B.C.’s Lower Mainland, potentially with a caretaker who has yet to be identified.

The RCMP has said Kai Pavlovic’s mysterious disappearance does not yet meet the criteria for issuing an Amber Alert, but that anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact law enforcement immediately.

Burnaby RCMP officers discovered him missing on Sept. 26 after being asked to conduct a wellness check on the boy.

Cpl. Laura Hirst said investigators have spoken with his family and extended family, and have “reason to believe Kai is staying with a caregiver who police are actively working to identify.”

“We believe there are people who know who this caretaker is and where they are located, and we are appealing for them to come forward and speak to police,” said Hirst.

Authorities are also hoping to speak with any parents whose children have shared playdates or extracurricular activities with the missing child, as well as any operators or instructors familiar with him.

The RCMP’s top priority is to find Kai and “confirm his wellbeing,” Hirst said.

Authorities would not confirm any details of the child’s custody, or information contained in an online fundraiser purportedly set up by extended family in New Zealand.

“Kai has been living in Canada and had limited contact with family overseas over the last 12 months,” reads the fundraiser. “Recently, concern for his wellbeing was raised by his deceased father’s family.”

RCMP launch billboards to find missing Burnaby, B.C., 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic

Burnaby RCMP are launching a B.C.-wide billboard campaign as they continue their search for missing 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic.

The billboards will be located in multiple locations throughout the Lower Mainland and the province starting Friday, according to police.

“We want everyone to be on the lookout for Kai. Our investigators are working tirelessly to locate him, and we are asking for the public’s help as part of that ongoing effort,” Burnaby RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Laura Hirst said in a news release.

Police believe he is with a "caretaker" — but they don't know who that person is.

“We are making a direct appeal to that caretaker or anyone who knows them,” said Hirst. “If you have Kai in your care, you need to come forward and contact the Burnaby RCMP. We need to confirm Kai’s safety and well-being.”

Police are also sharing a Serbian-language news release, as Kai's family has close connections to the Serbian community, according to Hirst.

So has he been attending school or was he in BC for a vacation? It is a little vague. If he attended school, wouldn't the school know his address and caretaker?

'We are devastated': Family of 11-year-old boy missing in British Columbia appeal for information

The family of an 11-year-old boy with family in New Zealand and Canada are urging anyone with information to come forward, nearly a month after concerns were raised about his whereabouts with police in British Columbia.

RNZ earlier reported Kai Pavlovic's New Zealand-based family had "grave concerns for his safety".

Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a request for a well-being check for Kai on 26 September. They earlier said it was believed he was with a caretaker who they are actively working to identify.

In a statement to RNZ on Friday, Kai's aunt Helen Kok said Kai, who is a New Zealand citizen is an "exceptionally kind, caring, intelligent, and funny young boy".

Kai relocated with his mother and stepfather to Vancouver in 2023.

"We have lost contact with Kai. His extended family from both Montenegro and New Zealand love him deeply, and miss him terribly.

"As a family we are devastated by the situation, and continue to be gravely concerned for Kai's wellbeing.

So he moved with stepdad and mom who I am guessing told LE he is with a caretaker...

Casey Anthony said a nanny, Lori Daybell said with Melanie Gibb... In both cases, the child/ren were not alive and were never with a caretaker.

Hoping this boy is found safe however a month later LE can't name the caretaker or confirm one exists or he is really with the person.

So far as I can tell anyhow...

Burnaby boy’s disappearance still brings more questions than answers over one month on

More than a month has passed since the reported disappearance of an 11-year-old Burnaby boy, and his family is still searching for answers.

The Burnaby RCMP says it received a request for a well-being check for Kai Pavlovic on Sept. 26. They were not able to locate him, and say they have been searching for him ever since.

In recent responses to 1130 NewsRadio’s request for information, the Burnaby RCMP has said there is no update to share.

Private investigator Steve Hoffman says the lack of answers from police only leads to more questions about what is actually going on here.

“I’m confused as to why somebody did a welfare check on them. Why? Why that was requested? I’m curious who the caretaker — that’s been identified in the media — I’m curious who that is. I’m wondering how the parents play into this, and perhaps other people in the community are playing into this,” said Hoffman.

He says there are always ways to find someone who doesn’t want to be found, but police are limited in what they can do within the law.

“There could be information out there on cell networks that would give an indication as to where they are or, perhaps, where they have been. And I think there are certain scenarios that, certainly, the police can access that information. And there are times where the private sector can access similar information as well.”

Hoffman says he’s “confident the Mounties are doing everything they possibly can to resolve” the case.

Murder charge laid in death of 11-year-old boy reported missing in Burnaby

Two family members have been charged in the death of an 11-year-old boy who was reported missing in Burnaby, B.C., more than a year ago.

Police received a report in September 2025 to check on the well-being of Kai Pavlovic, who was last known to be living with his family in Burnaby.

When officers couldn't find the boy after several days, the probe was escalated and the case was taken over by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team in June, the same month the boy's remains were found.

Investigators say 51-year-old Branko Bijelic faces charges of second-degree murder and indignity to human remains, while 46-year-old Sarah Bijelic is charged with manslaughter.

The homicide team's Sgt. Freda Fong says the two are related to the boy, but she wouldn't say how they are connected, only that police wanted the public to know "that this was not a stranger incident" and the death was not random.

Fong says family members in New Zealand contacted police last year because they hadn't heard from the boy and that was out of character.

She said on Monday that it was an emotional and difficult investigation to work on and other details about the case will be made public during the trial process.

"Today, what's importance is that we're announcing a lot of our findings for the public to have closure, because a lot people were out there and worried about Kai," she said.

She said the laying of charges is a significant milestone following more than a year of investigation, but the work continues as the case moves through the prosecution process.

Pair charged after missing 11-year-old B.C. boy’s remains found

On June 25, 2026, the homicide team took over the case and the investigation ultimately led to the discovery of Pavlovic’s remains, police said.

On Oct. 30, 2026, investigators arrested 51-year-old Branko Bijelic of Burnaby in connection with the case.

The BC Prosecution Service has now approved charges of second-degree murder and indignity to human remains against Bijelic.

Sarah Bijelic of Burnaby, 46, was also charged with one count of manslaughter.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share this update in the investigation into Kai’s death,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT in the release.

“There are no words to accurately express the sadness surrounding the circumstances.”

“We recognize the concern this investigation has caused within the community, and our thoughts are with Kai’s loved ones and those affected by this tragedy. We thank the public for their assistance and for coming forward with information.”
