1-year-old Alabama boy missing after crash killed father and 2-year-old sister, critically injured mom

A 1-year-old boy is missing more than a week after a wreck killed his father and 2-year-old sister in Fayette County, authorities said Monday.

Since the Dec. 8 single-vehicle wreck, which also left the child’s mother in critical condition, 1-year-old Kahleb Rowan Collins has been unaccounted for, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said.

Steven Bradley Collins, 40, of Jasper, and 2-year-old Ryleigh Collins died after the wreck on Fayette County Road 73 near the Glen Allan community, the sheriff’s office said.

Steven Collins, who died at a local hospital on Dec. 9, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck. Ryleigh was unrestrained at the time of the incident and pronounced dead at the scene.

A day after the wreck, authorities were told that Collins and the critically injured mother had another child that was unaccounted for.

Authorities did not state whether the child was Kahleb was believed to be in the wreck at the time of the single-vehicle crash.

Hearing for 2 charged in missing Fayette Co. 1-year-old case could be moved due to Pickens County murder trial

A preliminary hearing for two charged in connection with the mysterious disappearance of missing Fayette County 1-year-old Kahleb Collins could be moved from its set date for Tuesday.

District Attorney Andrew Hamlin, who serves Lamar, Pickens and Fayette County, filed a motion Friday requesting a judge for a continuance of hearings set for February 11 for John Bailey and Wendy Pam Bailey, the child’s grandfather and mother.

The reason for that filing is because Hamilin and defense counsel will be in Pickens County next Tuesday for a specially set jury trial. According to court records, that trial is for Jeremy Colvin, charged with capital murder and attempted murder for shooting and killing one and injuring 4 others in Aliceville in 2021.

Hamlin is requesting that the judge set the hearing on the next available preliminary hearing docket so that the state may adequately present its case.

DA seeks postponement in case of missing Fayette County toddler due to trial conflict
Another delay was requested for the preliminary hearings in connection to cases involving the disappearance of Fayette County toddler Kahleb Collins.

New court documents filed Friday, February 7 show District Attorney Andrew C. Hamlin submitted a motion to continue hearings for both Collins' mother, Wendy Pamela Bailey, and his grandfather, John Bailey.

The hearings were set for February 11, 2025 after a previous continuance was granted for a previous date of January 15, 2025

The request is due to a scheduling conflict, as the State will be engaged in a specially set jury trial in Pickens County on the same date.

"The State of Alabama respectfully requests the above-listed case be continued from the February 11, 2025, docket and set on the next available preliminary hearing docket," the court documents stated. This request aims to ensure that the State can adequately present its case to the court.

State asks for more time in missing toddler case; investigation not complete
The State of Alabama has filed a motion to continue the preliminary hearing in the case against Wendy Pamela Bailey and John Bailey originally scheduled for March 11, 2025. Andrew C. Hamlin, the District Attorney for the 24th Judicial Circuit, submitted the request citing an incomplete investigative file as the reason for the delay.

The motion, filed electronically on March 5, 2025, asks the court to reschedule the hearing to the next available docket. The state emphasized the need for additional time to adequately prepare its case against both defendants.

"The State of Alabama respectfully requests the above-listed case be continued from the March 11, 2025, docket and set on the next available preliminary hearing docket so that the State may adequately present its case to this Honorable Court," said Hamlin in the motion.

The decision now rests with the court to determine if it will grant the motion and set a new date. If approved it would be the third delay of the preliminary hearings.

Indictment, continued hearings for grandfather and mom charged in Fayette Co. toddler’s disappearance

The mother and grandfather of 1-year-old Kahleb Collins have both had their cases postponed to a later date.

Wendy Pam Bailey and John Elton Bailey, the mother and grandfather of 1-year-old Kahleb, were set to go to court Wednesday morning for preliminary hearings. A clerk confirmed with WBRC that those hearings were continued to a later date.

Collins has been missing since his family was involved in a deadly crash back in December. Collins’ father and sister were killed in the crash.

Grandfather John Bailey, who lived at the home with Kahleb and Wendy, is charged with failure to report a missing child. Wednesday morning, his attorney James Standridge told WBRC his client was indicted by a grand jury.

John Bailey’s daughter, Wendy Bailey - the mother of Kahleb - is charged with corpse abuse, first degree domestic violence, and aggravated child abuse in connection with the disappearance of her son.

According to statements Wendy Bailey gave investigators, Kahleb’s body was placed in a bag, put in a shed, then ultimately disposed of at an unknown location.

Standridge said John Bailey will be arraigned, but he doesn’t have a date.

“We are waiting to be provided with the discovery in the case so we can determine what, if any, involvement Mr. Bailey may have had in the disappearance of this child, and how we can set about to defend that,” Standridge said. “As of now, we’ve been given no evidence that he was involved.”

Fayette mother indicted on child abuse, domestic violence charges in case of missing 1-year-old son believed to be dead

Nearly eight months after 1-year-old Kahleb Collins was last seen alive in Fayette County, his mother has been indicted on abuse and domestic violence charges against him.

Wendy Pamela Bailey, 23, was recently indicted on one count of aggravated child abuse, four counts of first-degree domestic violence and abuse of a corpse. The grand jury indictment comes as police believe Kahleb Collins is likely dead, even though his body has yet to be found.

In the indictment, the grand jury concluded that Bailey, whose husband, Steven Collins, and 2-year-old daughter, Ryleigh, died in a car crash on County Road 73 on Dec. 9, did reportedly “torture, willfully abuse, cruelly beat, or otherwise willfully maltreat the said K.R.C. by acts taking place on more than two occasions.” Specifically, the grand jury stated that in several instances, Kahleb was tied to a chair with cable ties, as well as suspended him from the ceiling and hit him.

Regarding the corpse abuse charge, Bailey is accused of treating his corpse in a way that would “outrage ordinary family sensibilities.”

Prosecutors have previously argued that Steven Bailey, Kahleb’s father, engaged in abusing Kahleb and Wendy failed to report the abuse.

John Bailey, Khaleb’s grandfather, was also indicted in the case on charges of aggravated child abuse, four counts of 1st degree domestic violence, corpse abuse and first degree hindering prosecution.

Wendy and John Bailey are set to be arraigned on August 8.

‘We’re going to stand in the breach’: Fayette Co. DA discusses challenges of Kahleb Collins case

We’re learning new heartbreaking details of abuse a Fayette County toddler may have endured at the hands of his own mother and grandfather.

Court documents made public for John and Wendy Bailey show what prosecutors believe they did to missing 1-year-old Kahleb Collins, who is now believed by investigators to be dead.

It’s hard to read and listen to some of what’s described in the new court documents, but the indictments from a grand jury are shedding light on why hearings for the two were postponed earlier this month.

Wendy and John Bailey are now each facing the same six charges, including aggravated child abuse, abuse of a corpse, and four counts of first degree domestic violence.

For the first time, WBRC was able to speak to Fayette County District Attorney Andrew Hamlin via phone call about the case.

Hamlin says the case has been challenging due to the large amount of documents and other evidence his office is having to review, as well as from an emotional standpoint.

However, Hamlin says that his office is looking forward to getting justice for Kahleb and his sister.

“The victims being the age that they were and what the evidence bears out that they were subjected to is, it’s been very difficult. But it’s like all cases, we’re going to follow the facts and evidence,” Hamlin said. “My office, we’re going to stand in the breach, and were going to prosecute the case and seek justice for these children.”

I'm almost more ticked off at the grandfather since he's the one that was supposed to have custody of this child because of the actions of his parents. Now we have him facing the same charges. :gaah:

I can't read the links even and I regret even looking at some of these, seriously, I just about cannot take it. Yet it matters so I try. I'm sobbing. I don't want to know details, just can't take it It is often parents or a bf of mom or some such, but some lately we are seeing grandparents. Boy that upsets me too, agree with. I love my kids, but anyone who is a grandparent who is "normal" there is NOTHING like i. I ADORE my grandchildren. You are older when you have them and it's just different, you adore your kids of couse most do, I do, but you were never a parent before, you are learning, maybe working, and so on. Later on in life grandchildren come and with most we have more time, been through child raising, etc. and it's just different.

And you have some hindsight and you if a good person want to be there and so on.

I don't dare look at the details here.

So not going to read the links but agree on post above, how the heck a grandparent.... BOY.

I follow some because sh*t just can't be ignored and needs something done but boy hard to understand and hard to take sometimes...

😭 absolutely serious. haven't even read the links. i am recognizing i need to get away from such. i don't always realize when.

Prosecutors are making effort to hold the mother and grandfather of missing toddler Kahleb Collins without bond, based on Aniah's Law.

Fayette County lights candles, seeking closure in Kahleb Collins case
A community gathered in somber unity Wednesday night to honor the memory of 1-year-old Kahleb Collins and his sister Ryleigh. It has been seven months since the investigation into Kahleb's disappearance began, and the recent discovery of human remains on the Collins family property has left the community reeling.
Dan Newburn, an advocate for missing children, said, "This community deserves closure."

"The best thing a community can do right now, is unite as one," said Newburn. On Wednesday night, the community did just that. At Guthrie Smith Park, people of all ages and backgrounds gathered, lighting candles and saying prayers for a little boy many never met but refuse to forget.

In the quiet moments of the evening, one message resonated: "We are not going to quit talking about these babies right here, until justice is done," said Newburn.

Sheriff Yerby noted that they have not yet received the results of the DNA testing on the human remains found in the burn pile.

Kahleb and Ryleigh Collins Act aims to hold child welfare workers accountable
In response to the alleged abuse and disappearance of Fayette County toddler Kahleb Collins, a new legislative proposal is being drafted that could impose civil and criminal penalties on child welfare workers who fail to act on abuse reports.

The proposed legislation, known as the Kahleb and Ryleigh Collins Act, aims to allow families to sue Child Protective Services (CPS) workers in civil court and open the possibility of criminal charges if abuse reports are ignored and a child is harmed. Dan Newburn, an advocate for missing children, said, "This piece of legislation is designed to keep the Department of Human Resources or Child Protective Services, criminally or civilly liable."

Court records suggest that Alabama’s Department of Human Resources had prior involvement with the family. The proposed act would remove immunity for CPS workers in certain cases, allow lawsuits with no monetary cap, and make it a crime if workers willfully ignore serious reports. Newburn said, "If they botch an investigation, they ignore an investigation, they ignore a report and that report leads to serious bodily harm or death."

Newburn's goal is to ensure that what happened to Kahleb and Ryleigh does not happen to another child. Although the proposal has not yet been formally introduced, Newburn is actively working with Kahleb and Ryleigh's family to advance the legislation.

Alabama court approves genetic sample request in child abuse and homicide case
The State of Alabama has filed a motion in the Circuit Court of Fayette County seeking a genetic sample from Wendy Pamela Jean Bailey.

The motion, submitted by Andrew C. Hamlin, District Attorney for the 24th Judicial Circuit of Alabama, requests the court to mandate Bailey to provide a genetic sample.

The state argues that this sample is necessary for a comparative analysis to determine if Bailey is a contributor to biological evidence collected during the investigation.

The motion states, "Good cause exists for believing that the requested disclosures are relevant and material to the merits of the charge." It further asserts that obtaining the genetic sample would not constitute an unreasonable intrusion or affront to Bailey's dignity.

Circuit court judge Samuel Junkin approved the motion.

Mother, grandfather of Kahleb Collins plead not guilty in death of 1-year-old boy in Fayette County

The mother and grandfather of a 1-year-old boy who went missing for months before his remains were reportedly found on his family’s property have pleaded not guilty in his death, citing their mental health.

Earlier this month, Wendy Pamela Jean Bailey and her father, John Elton Bailey, pleaded not guilty to domestic violence, abuse of a corpse and aggravated child abuse, all citing “mental disease or defect.”
