Search for missing actor Julian Sands continues by air, California sheriff says

A search for missing British actor Julian Sands in treacherous conditions on Mount Baldy will continue by air only, a California sheriff’s department reported.

After extensive ground and air searches, efforts to find Sands will continue by air only, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported on Twitter.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter based in Auburn, equipped with a special device that can detect electronics and credit cards, will be utilized, the post said. Rescuers hope the device will help pinpoint an area for additional searches.
Oh wow. I didn't know they could track credit cards. I'm guessing the chip. I'm sure he had electronics him. Credit card, Probably not.

Julian Sands was reported missing Jan. 13 after failing to return from a hike on Mt. Baldy in California, but officials are still hopeful for his return.

As rescue efforts continue for the 65-year-old actor in the San Gabriel Mountains, Mara Rodriguez, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department public information officer, said the search is still on to find Sands.

"We have not transitioned into recovery at this point," Rodriguez told Fox News Digital.

"It's still considered a search and rescue mission. We don't have any kind of set date for that, but it's definitely something that we're keeping in mind."

A ground search for missing actor Julian Sands is being planned imminently in the southern Californian mountains, before the arrival of another storm in the region.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department said there was currently no exact date or time for the search but that ground crews would be deployed

Another Missing Hiker Has Been Found Dead In San Gabriels As Search For Actor Julian Sands Continues

A hiker missing for weeks in the San Gabriel Mountains has been found dead.

Authorities reported the body of a man — Bob Gregory of Hawthorne — was recovered near Mount Islip.

Gregory, 62, was reported missing on Jan. 13 after he left on a solo hike. Rescue crews are still looking for actor Julian Sands, who was reported missing from a solo hike the same day.

A third solo hiker reported missing around the same time was located alive with minor injuries in late January, and another man was rescued after falling more than 50 feet. He was able to call for help using a satellite device he was carrying.

O.K. I was just voicing concern for an extreme situation.
I am right there with you Mel.... I used to do hikes, walkes, drives all alone, vacation going places. since 3ish years I ache to go but my panic attacks which are connected with experiences years ago make me stay home unless I can go with someone... It is sad how the world changed......

The area where missing actor Julian Sands disappeared while hiking has been closed by authorities due to the risk of avalanches.

<snip>
The Mount Baldy resort and popular nearby areas were ‘temporarily closed’ on Monday and would remain that way until further notice, authorities said.

Searches of the area, both on the ground and in the air, have been suspended while the weather conditions persist, with the area battered by snow storms in the last week.

This is exactly why I say you shouldn't go alone. @SheWhoMustNotBeNamed. I know you love it. You are very experienced and a very intelligent person. I remember you saying it is hard to find someone who shares the same interest. I also remember you saying all the tracking devices are available now. But an accident might be instant death, Succumbing to injuries or weather. am just voicing concern.

I appreciate your concerns. Trust me. My dad has the same ones. Which is why I now have strict guidelines to follow, such as carrying a tracking/communication device, leaving an itinerary, checking in at certain intervals, etc.

I read an article a while back and a quote within really struck with me.

"And, in reality, if us females want to travel but we don’t have a partner, a friend or a family member willing to accompany us, what’s our alternative to going it alone? Stay at home and never see the world? I think not."

I will take every imaginable precaution to travel and hike safely. But if a freak accident takes me out? There are worse ways to go.

Also, freak accidents can certainly also happen staying home and not seeing the world, too. We're not letting what has nearly no chance of happening rule what we do and not do. We all drive, don't we? Far greater chance of something happening there than most exploring.

Julian Sands' son speaks out three months into search for missing actor

Actor Julian Sands has not returned from a hike on Mt. Baldy in January, marking more than three months since the "Warlock" star was reported missing.

His son Henry admitted he's trying to be "realistic" with his expectations that his father may not be found.

"I am hugely appreciative for all the efforts made so far from the volunteer search and rescue climbers and the San Bernardino County Sheriff team to bring my father home," Henry told The Times.

He added he was "of course, realistic about the impact on the search of the weather conditions over the last three months — it's been a 40-year snowfall record in California."

"There is nothing really further to say at this point other than to reinforce my deepest gratitude for the love and support my family and I have received," Henry said.

He added that he "look(s) forward to the search resuming as soon as the weather improves and the ground conditions are safe and feasible to do so."

"We have not transitioned into recovery at this point," Rodriguez said in February. "It's still considered a search and rescue mission. We don't have any kind of set date for that, but it's definitely something that we're keeping in mind.

"We are still conducting searches as weather and conditions allow. Right now, those are still just by air because of the icy conditions and such on the mountain. But unfortunately, nothing new has developed."

At the time, Rodriguez said it was not "typical" to locate a missing hiker after a significant time-lapse, but crews are still maintaining hope.

Search resumes for missing actor Julian Sands in Southern California mountains

The search for British actor Julian Sands resumed over the weekend in Los Angeles.

More than 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff took part in the search in remote areas across Mount Baldy on Saturday.

They were supported by two helicopters and drone crews, but officials say they still haven’t found Sands.

Search for missing English actor Julian Sands, 65, continues in Mount Baldy area after his disappearance in January during snowy hike

The search for missing English actor Julian Sandshas continued more than five months after he disappeared while out on a hike.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department issued a press release on Monday announcing that ongoing search efforts were conducted on Saturday in the Mount Baldy wilderness area for the 65-year-old actor who went missing while on a snowy hike in January.

The search effort included more than 80 Search and Rescue volunteers, deputies and staff, but Sands was not located, according to the release.

Two helicopters and drone crews also supported the search effort.

Search teams were inserted via aviation resources across Mount Baldy and drone crews searched areas inaccessible to ground crews.

'Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions. Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10 plus feet of ice and snow,' the release said.

The actor's missing person case remains active and search efforts will continue in a limited capacity.

Human remains have been found in the area Julian Sands disappeared on California's Mount Baldy, authorities have confirmed.

"At about 10:00 a.m., civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after they discovered human remains in the Mt. Baldy wilderness," San Fernando Police Department said in a statement released on Saturday. "Fontana Station deputies, along with the Sheriff’s Department’s Emergency Operations Division, responded to the scene."

Although police did not mention Sands by name, the remains were discovered in the same area of the Californian mountain that the Ocean's Thirteen actor was hiking in when he was reported missing in January.

"The decedent was transported to the Coroner’s Office, pending positive identification. Identification should be completed next week," the statement said.

Representatives for Sands did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

The discovery comes after the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department shared a statement from the Sands family last week, five months after the 65-year-old A Room with a View actor went missing while hiking Southern California's Mount Baldy in January.
