Authorities search for Missouri doctor who has been missing more than a week

Authorities in a small Missouri town are searching for an emergency room physician a week-and-a-half after his mysterious disappearance.

Dr. John Forsyth, 49, was last heard from May 21. Police said he was reported missing when he failed to show up for work that day at Mercy Hospital in Cassville, a town of 3,100 residents deep in the Missouri Ozarks.

Forsyth’s black Infiniti was found in a remote area near an aquatic park in Cassville. The car was unlocked with his wallet, two phones and a laptop inside.

Several law enforcement agencies, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, have joined in the search using people, dogs and drones. Forsyth’s family set up a Facebook page seeking information.

Richard Forsyth said his brother had been at the Cassville hospital for about 15 years. He described John Forsyth as a doting father who became engaged to his girlfriend just a couple of days before he disappeared.

I did look back and his bike was found at Lost Bridge. That is the north central area of the lake and is an entire area, not just a spot. The only other identifier for where he was found was Benton County and that is where 75% of the lake is, so that's really no help at all.

They didn't tell us anything about the notes before so I can see how they didn't tell us very much at all, including if the gun was found. Not being mentioned does not mean not found. They never did issue a public statement about being on the lookout for it, either, so by that I can also assume they did find it and just didn't know at the time who fired it, being him or somebody else.
Maybe that works for you but it doesn't for me, the not mentioning it leaves me with a big unanswered question, actually several. Did they find it? Was it his? Was it registered? Etc., etc. It's the instrument of the death and I think it's a pretty big deal. Imo.

it was right after Memorial Day, if I remember correctly. He also might not have died the same day he disappeared, but yes, I would have thought he would have been found much quicker if he was actually in the water that long, but he could have been in one of the quieter coves.

They said they found his bike, but I would like to know when they found his bike and how long it had been where they found it.

It would also be nice if they would tell us where all of that was found. It's a huge lake. I presume it all was on the northern end because of his ride there and how they stated how far away from Cassville he was, but even the north edge is huge.
That's what I mean too lots of unanswered questions. It'd be nice if they had a press conference and answered the bunch of questions. I don't have the advantage of knowing the area or the lake as you do but yeah, took a bit to find him.

I would have thought the letters and cash were a bit of a big deal to the mystery, too, wouldn't you? but here we are, with that only recently being mentioned.

Yeah.

All I know is I still have questions. I don't think any of us can deny this has been and still is one very unusual case.

Do you think he wanted family and friends to think someone else did something to him?

And why do you ask someone to help you commit suicide? Didn't he ask a nurse or something?

Yeah.

The asking for help part or wanting people to think it wasn't a suicide... Life insurance policy possibly?

So he went into the lake and shot himself in the top of his head. The gun should then have been right nearby in the lake with the body. And the bike near the edge of the lake presumably. Sure sounds strange.

That's why I am not saying they haven't found the gun. It is a large enough area that it might not have been "right" where his body was found though. It could have been in quite a different spot depending on how long he was actually in the water and how far the currents might have taken him from that spot.

Reading back, I am not sure exactly where they found the bike. It just states they saw him on surveillance in the area on his bike and "near" the body. "Near" could still be a ways away. I'm now questioning how long he was actually in the water because it was awfully lucky for a long holiday weekend to go by, days after he disappeared and the bike to stay there undisturbed.

I get your point about the bike and the body perhaps drifting away. The cash and the note may have been near the bike and he then walked into the lake at an unknown point to kill himself.

Cash with notes were found on him.
I have just read how they found his car. It was because they were looking for a missing kid and checked all cars and his was still parked so they checked his car out and then started searching for him. So his car was parked at the lake? And the bike too? Do we know how far apart? I guess he was biking around part of the lake.

No. The car was found at the aquatic park in Cassville, which depending on exactly where he was found, could be 20-50 miles from Cassville. They have it worded to where they believe he rode the bike to the lake, which is why i am so surprised. Those roads are not for the weary from Cassville to the lake and IF he did actually do that, there would have been so many irate drivers having to deal with a bike on that road. Many switchbacks and grade warnings when you get anywhere near the lake.

Ok I am just getting my head around this.
His car was found in the car park of the Aquatic center in Cassville, Missouri.
But his bike was found at Lost Bridge and his body was found in Beaver Lake - both of those locations in Benton County, Arkansas. From the Aquatic Centre to Lost Bridge on Beaver Lake was 27 Miles.

Yeah once you reminded there was a holiday in a busy lake area, that struck me odd as well.

Missing Cassville doctor’s death to be investigated as a homicide

John Forsyth’s brother, Richard Forsyth, spoke with authorities in Arkansas yesterday who told him they are investigating Forsyth’s death as a homicide.

“He had no guns,” Richard Forsyth said. “I talked to him about that. He didn’t want to have a gun.”

Meanwhile, Missouri law enforcement is still investigating the missing person’s case to try to figure out how he went missing in the first place, according to Richard Forsyth.

“At this point, it looks like he was abducted and killed and thrown into a lake,” Richard said. “Just looking at it from my point of view, that’s what it seems like.”

Richard Forsyth and the rest of John’s family are awaiting the results of his autopsy, but Richard says closure for the family can’t happen until they know what happened to their loved one.
This has his brother saying he had no guns. Just one more weird thing. Did he buy or borrow one and where is it?

Also I did a distance query from the Aquatic centre to Lost Bridge, and it was 31 miles.

That brother--what to say about him? He is just another odd thing in all of this imo. He said a lot of things and I came to wonder if he really knew every last detail of John's life as he thought he did. He was constantly talking and imo almost overly inserted himself into the case. He himself is yet another weird thing in all of it.

I recall the part about no guns but who knows? It is interesting though when added to the fact LE does not mention the gun being found nor to who it was registered if it was found...

Also, his death was in Arkansas but his car, work and RV was in Missouri? Did he actually have a proper home address? Who investigated? Missouri or Arkansas?

His actual home is in Aurora, Mo. He had the RV at the hospital so he could rest and not have to travel all the time from Aurora and back. As an ER doc in a rural hospital, he could easily go to the rv to rest and still be right there. His shifts could easily be 12-24 hour shifts and let's say a wreck came in with multiple injuries, that could take hours to triage and all he had to do was trot across the parking lot and rest a bit until needed. This happens often in the rural hospitals I am familiar with.
