IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The husband of an Iowa health care administrator stabbed his wife to death in April, hours before she was set to learn about financial problems he had tried to hide from her, police alleged in court documents filed Tuesday.

Roy Browning Jr. of Iowa City was arrested Monday night on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of JoEllen Browning, his wife of 42 years. He was being held Tuesday at the Johnson County jail after a judge set a $5 million bond.

Roy Browning, 67, had called 911 on the morning of April 5 to report that he found his wife unresponsive on her bedroom floor at their Iowa City home. <snip>
An hour after she was reported dead, JoEllen Browning was scheduled to meet with the family's financial representative to discuss those problems as she prepared to file their taxes, Riessen wrote.

At the meeting, JoEllen Browning was going to learn that one of their savings accounts was depleted, that Roy Browning had taken out loans of which she was not aware and that an account she thought was active never actually existed, he wrote. <snip>

Wow, 42 years of marriage and two adult children, to end like this. What is WRONG with people, smh. Killing her certainly did not solve his problems did it? It only secured his arrest and likely the rest of his life in prison.

According to documents filed Monday, the defense requested a delay in the trial due to a previously granted motion to extend deadlines on pretrial motions. The defense also wanted a trial delay due to “other conflicting professional obligations, the substantial amount of discovery yet to be reviewed, and the need to pursue additional defense investigation,” court documents read.

The state did not resist the defense’s motion to delay the trial and case management conference.

Trial for Iowa City man accused of murder delayed to next year

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - A trial set to start today for an Iowa City man accused of killing his wife is now delayed until next year.

Roy Browning Jr. has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder charges. He is accused of stabbing JoEllen Browning back in April of last year.

Court documents say his lawyers asked to delay the trial because of restrictions in place due to the pandemic.

Prosecutors say Browning’s motive to kill his wife may have been hidden financial transactions and her substantial life insurance policy.

Trial for Iowa City man accused of murdering his wife likely delayed for a third time

The trial was scheduled to begin on March 16th, but, according to court documents, a trial rescheduling conference has been scheduled to take place on February 18th at 11:00 A.M. via phone.

According to a motion for continuance filed by Browning’s lawyer, attorney Leon F. Spies, Browning’s defense team says COVID-19 precautions and restrictions have “continued to severely impede counsel’s ability to confer with the Defendant, review the voluminous discovery materials in this case, and determine the necessity of filing pretrial motions.”

Browning’s defense team also cited the inability of independent forensic examination of evidence to be completed before the beginning of the March 16th trial date as another reason for rescheduling request.

Trial delayed again for Iowa City man accused of killing his wife

An Iowa City man accused of fatally stabbing his wife in 2019 will not go to trial this month, a judge said after he met privately with prosecution and defense lawyers Friday.

The trial for Roy Carl Browning Jr., 69, who is charged with first-degree murder, will be reset for the sixth time since 2020. His trial most recently had been set to begin July 12 in Johnson County District Court.

This trial has been reset because of the pandemic and scheduling conflicts In addition, the defense previously asked for more time for independent forensic testing, according to court records.

Browning also filed a motion Friday to exclude any testimony that would inform jurors he declined to be questioned or stopped questions and asked for a lawyer during a police interview.

He also wants the court to keep out any testimony by law enforcement providing investigative conclusions regarding his wife’s activities, their relationship and statements made by other witnesses about him or his wife’s financial information.

He also wants the court to prevent the prosecution from presenting “opinion testimony” by a lay person or expert about any possible motive he might have had and of any alleged concealment of funds or how they were used because no witness is “competent” to testify about Browning’s “mental processes or thoughts.”

The defense also wants to keep out any testimony alleging Roy Browning was seen with “younger women or beliefs he had one night stands” with other women because it’s irrelevant, according to the motion.

OH FFS! OVER 2 YRS?! This shouldn't be allowed. He'll die of old age before going to trial. I liked the old days. You did it. Convicted. Death penalty. Dead within a year or two. DONE! I do agree there has to be irrefutable proof the person did it to be sentenced to death. Guilty. Let's get to it. When Serial killers die on death row of old age, Cancer etc. And have been there 10 yrs or more. That isn't justice. They don't care what they do. They have no empathy. No conscience. It's the way to make them pay. Because THEY don't want to die. Bundy didn't. This guy isn't a serial killer, But I see some of the same behavior and he is just concerned with himself. And he has no remorse either. Another shared characteristic. Looking for an excuse, A reason. That's another. Wasn't my fault. No. You couldn’t handle your wife finding out what a POS you are.

Delay delay delay. Always for the defendant. He allegedly killed his WIFE and they want to exclude everything that shows possible motive and what a pi** poor husband he was.

It is getting really difficult to have any respect for the system--those that deserve to be heard aren't, those who deserve time aren't given any but the criminal is pandered to or so it seems...

New date set.
