Prosecutors have filed charges against a 42-year-old man after a missing 10-year-old girl was found injured inside his home last week.

The mother of the girl told police her daughter was missing for about 30 minutes before she called police, Lafayette Police Department Lt. Randy Sherer said in a press release last week. The man, who lived in the 700 block of Park Avenue, made comments about seeing the child in the time frame she was missing.

On Monday, prosecutors in Tippecanoe County charged James Chadwell II with attempted murder, two counts of child molesting, kidnapping, criminal confinement resulting in serious bodily injury, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and strangulation, according to online court records.

That is a very creepy tattoo. What seems strange to me is this seems backwards. A perpetrator usually molests then works their way up to more serious offences. Abby and Libby weren't molested. That seems strange he would kill 2 then move on to molesting.

Suspect in Lafayette kidnapping, molest seeks venue change

A man accused of kidnapping and molesting of a 9-year-old girl wants to move his upcoming trial.

Her discovery isn't far from the high profile and unsolved murders of two girls in Delphi in 2017. Some media reports have indicated a possible link between the incidents. For that reason, Chadwell's attorney says his client can't get a fair trial and he wants a judge to move it.

Lafayette man pleads guilty on all charges in attempted murder, kidnapping of 9-year-old girl

James Chadwell II has pleaded guilty to charges including attempted murder, child molesting, kidnapping, criminal confinement, strangulation and battery after a missing 9-year-old girl was rescued from his home.

Chadwell could face 160 years in prison at sentencing Dec. 16.

Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Steve Meyer on Thursday handed down a 90-year prison sentence to 42-year-old James Brian Chadwell II, who in October pleaded guilty to all of seven of the charges levied against him, including attempted murder, two counts of child molestation, kidnapping, criminal confinement, battery with serious bodily injury, and strangulation, Indianapolis Fox affiliate WXIN reported.

Chadwell had been facing a maximum sentence of 160 years in prison for his horrific offenses. His sentence included a 20-year habitual offender enhancement.

As previously reported by Law&Crime, Chadwell claimed he was “very drunk” at the time he attacked the young girl, telling authorities that he didn’t have a clear memory of what happened. He did not dispute the victim’s account of what she endured, however.
