Officials in Baton Rouge are racing against time as heavy rains and flooding approach the capital area in the search for missing 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who contacts them within the next 48 hours with information about Minnieweather.

Minnieweather has been missing for more than a week. He was last seen in the early hours of June 5 in the Baton Rouge area.

City officials held a press conference this afternoon with Mayor-President Sid Edwards and Police Chief TJ Morse leading the plea for community help. Multiple officials asked anyone with information about Minnieweather’s whereabouts to come forward.

‘No end date’: Police give update on search for Minnieweather’s remains​

Nearly two months after 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather was last seen, Baton Rouge police said in a release on Tuesday that the landfill search for his remains has entered its third week — with more than 1,000 tons of material processed and no end date in sight.

As of July 27, police say search teams have covered 2,679 square yards of the landfill and processed 1,054.1 tons of material. Daily productivity has increased from 90 tons to 150 tons over the course of the three-week operation.

Police say the operation requires around 70 to 80 people each day, including search teams, logistics, medical support, equipment operators, command staff, and support personnel. The department said the search has been conducted with the support of numerous local, state, and federal partners.

Due to hazardous conditions within the landfill and being considered a dangerous site, searchers are limited to 30 to 45 minutes of active searching before undergoing a rehabilitation period of more than one hour.

Personnel from the Baton Rouge Fire Department and East Baton Rouge EMS continuously monitor the health of all search personnel throughout each operational period.

Daily operations are also affected by weather conditions, available manpower, equipment capabilities, and environmental conditions within the landfill.


The Baton Rouge Police Department said there is no established end date for the operation. The department said it remains committed to continuing the search and is hopeful its objective will be achieved before available resources are exhausted.

WEEK 4: Search continues for Minnieweather’s remains at Baton Rouge landfill​

Investigators have now entered their fourth week combing through a Baton Rouge landfill in search of the remains of 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather.


Over the past three weeks, search team members excavated 3,400 total cubic yards of material and committed more than 4,600 man-hours to the operation.

Investigators said strong evidence points to the landfill as the location of Minnieweather’s remains.

The landfill has been deemed a dangerous site. Hazardous conditions limit searchers to just 30 to 45 minutes of active searching before they must stop for a rehabilitation period of more than one hour.

Personnel from the Baton Rouge Fire Department and East Baton Rouge EMS continuously monitor the health of all search personnel throughout each operational period.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said there is no end date in sight for the recovery efforts.

Detectives believe Minnieweather got into a fight with Parms and was killed in the struggle. It’s believed Parms stashed the body, threw away evidence, came back to get the evidence and possibly victim’s body, and transported it all somewhere else.

Morse is preserving the case, but told UWK there is no video of the homicide. “I can say that there is no video of the homicide occurring. There is no video of Maurice Parms beating Ja’Derrius Minnewether,” he said. “There is other video evidence that we have out there, some of which is in the arrest warrant that you mentioned. Him riding on this bicycle and things like that.”

“But all of the evidence in this case, we have to keep close to our chest because as soon as we start releasing any of it, or we show the videos to the family, now all of a sudden it becomes public record,” he continued. “If we start doing those things too early, then the defense even gets a bigger leg up, and we don’t want any of that stuff to happen. We have to protect the the prosecution of the case, and also protect the family.”

Maurice Parms, a 50-year-old man, was arrested for the second time on Saturday amid an investigation into a missing teen.

Man accused of murdering teen now facing new sex crimes charges​

The man accused of committing first-degree murder in the case of a missing teenager is now facing additional charges related to sexual misconduct and trafficking of a juvenile.

On Aug. 14, officials added the following charges against Maurice Parms: Indecent behavior with a juvenile; second-degree rape; and trafficking of children for sexual purposes, according to jail records.

Parms was arrested back in June for a charge of indecent behavior and online solicitation of a minor with a 16-year-old girl. He was released on bond days later, but then arrested on June 20 in connection with the murder of Ja’Derrius Minnieweather.

Man accused of killing Ja'Derrius Minnieweather facing new charge of raping minor, police say​

The man accused of killing 15-year-old Ja'Derrius Minnieweather in June now is facing charges involving sex crimes with juveniles, as the search continues for Minnieweather’s body in the Baton Rouge landfill.

Maurice Parms, 51, has been charged with counts of second-degree rape, trafficking of children for sexual purposes, and indecent behavior of juveniles.

According to the arrest affidavit, Parms admitted to sending money to a 16-year-old — even though he knew her age — for goods such as food, cigars and rent.

The victim told police that Parms knew she and her family were struggling for money. He would make sexual comments toward her and continue to supply money if she did the sexual acts he requested, police said.

The victim told police they met when she was 15. She described to police three instances when Parms had sex with her.
