Skeletal remains found more than 3 decades ago identified as woman who went missing at bowling alley

Skeletal remains that were found in Canadian County more than three decades ago have been identified as a woman who was reported missing after she disappeared from an Oklahoma City bowling alley in 1989.

According to the Canadian County Sheriff's Office, skeletal remains were found in 1990 along a creek east of U.S. 281 on State Highway 66. Evidence from examining the remains indicated that the victim was female and foul play was possibly involved.

The remains were not identified at the time, and investigators followed numerous leads that were eventually ruled out, according to a news release.

The Canadian County Sheriff's Office attended a conference in 2024 on ancestral DNA use for cold case investigations and met with a company that specializes in that area. That company, Othram, provided a potential ancestral DNA profile for the skeletal remains found in 1990.

Investigators discovered that the remains were possibly matched to a missing woman from Oklahoma City. The investigation confirmed the victim was JoAnne Marie Rozelle.
