‘Foul play may be involved,’ sheriff says of Utah woman missing in California

Investigators fear foul play may be involved in the disappearance of a 35-year-old woman from Utah who has been missing for nearly a week after taking a trip to California, officials announced.

Danielle Staley was reportedly last seen with a group of people just before 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 at Rio Del Mar State Beach, about 10 miles east of Santa Cruz, officials with the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office said.

In the department’s updated news release on Nov. 9, officials said, “New information indicates she may be at risk, and foul play may be involved.”

Investigators, according to SFGATE, said the 35-year-old arrived in California’s Central Coast with a friend near the end of October and was staying in a camper van near the beach. Her belongings were later found on the beach, though there was no sign of her.

Though authorities said there’s no indication that she got in the ocean the night she disappeared, sheriff’s investigators have repeatedly flown drones along the coastline looking for any sign of her.

Staley’s family members in Utah have not heard from her since she went missing, a behavior described as uncharacteristic for her.

“At this time, investigators are not ruling out foul play; however, the case is being treated as a missing person at risk due to the circumstances, Sgt. Zach West told SFGATE, adding that people associated with Staley have cooperated with the investigation so far.

I for one will admit I was suspecting him OR someone at the party of doing something to her. While this doesn't excuse any previous domestic abuse by him, she very unfairly made him a suspect in people's eyes as did her family who only were I imagine worried about her and naturally thinking he did something to her.

The stuff on the beach could have been intentional as well if she is one of them who wanted to make it look as if something happened to her and concern people. It wouldn't be the first one we have seen who pulled such a hoax. She also may have forgotten her things if "partying" but just as likely she wanted people to think she'd gone missing. Or maybe him to think that. Whatever the case, I think she deserves some consequences.
Maybe charged with wasting police time? She is 35 years old and clearly has not grown up yet.

Agree! Hard with an adult though, they can go missing legally if they choose to. If they can prove she intentionally pulled some hoax like that she was kidnapped, dead or raped as in some cases where they make up some elaborate story, then they could probably charge her but as it stands, not sure they have enough for that...

Who leaves all there belongings though to almost make it look like an abduction or even a suicide or drowning?

Agree. I tend to think it was intentional of her and not some oversight. Proving that though might be hard. Also, she'd be low on the list of urgency when there are real crimes LE are dealing with.

I do hope though she gets some consequences if indeed she intentionally worried people.

She should have notified her family much sooner if she left her stuff on purpose. No excuse for that.
