Redlands police ask for help in search for couple in 70s who disappeared over weekend

Authorities are asking for help in the search for a Southern California couple reported missing over the weekend after their unlocked vehicle was found near their residence.

Seventy-three-year-old Stephanie and Daniel Menard, 79, were reported missing Sunday by a friend. They were last seen at 10 a.m. Saturday at their home in the 26000 block of Keissel Road.

The couple's dog, a white Shih Tzu named Cuddles, also is missing.

The couple's car was found unlocked down the road from their home. Stephanie Menard's purse and the couple's cell phones were found at the residence.

Daniel Menard suffers from demntia and is diabetic, police said in a statement.

Kind of have to laugh although nothing funny about this tragedy, that they have to do some repairs before they can safely enter the home to search for them being they battered it. As someone said earlier what if they had been being kept alive in there... I can only figure they could not enter because he was thought to have bombs, traps or something or why wouldn't you tear gas it or something...

Motive? Was the dog a barker and drove him nuts or did his duty on his lawn instead of theirs? Believe me, such has happened over such... There's a show called Neighbors or something like that that is cases of murdered where neighbors drove each other nuts so to speak for a reason...

However, it could be something far bigger.

What does seem clear is people in the campground knew something from the start or early on. I mean you are not going to do a lot in a campground with no one noticing IF the sites are as close as most.

I've stayed away from the nudist thing or comments but seeing the place described as a family friendly nudist resort or whatever they say re families. To each their own but raising kids nude amongst strangers of adults uhm I would have an issue with. Not saying that goes on but the description would allude to that.

It of course makes the headlines more sensational for the news...

That's all I'll say about that. It is a murder plain and simple or two murders, nudist colony or not.

Okay daughter just confirmed they are safe and they are not doing any nudist resorts this trip at least... OMG lol.

I am a worry wart when it comes to even my adult kids traveling. We all think we know where we are going when have never been...

And this place was just on lockdown and they just spent two days in the very nearby area. Now they are off elsewhere. Sigh of relief. Not real fond of next destination either but again probably overworried. I feel that way about much of Cali, can't help it with all I see or read.

It of course struck me when this was going on and it was right the neck of the woods they were going...

This thread has only been up 2 days and it has been solved already. Must be a record.

How sad for this couple's friends and family. But they clearly had people watching out for them to get it solved so quckly.

The DM has someone saying that the neighbour hated Dan cutting a tree apparently, so definitely a neighbour dispute by the sound of it.

Breaking - human remains found.

So they left their residence and did get in their car? It's somewhat confusing. Did he somehow stop them or what? How'd he get them into his home? At gunpoint, did no one see him and them?

Also what kind of RV park allows homes and basements or bunkers? Are these mobile homes? Most wouldn't want any permanent structure imo.

is he the OWNER perhaps? If he is, the decision on tree cutting should be his, however maybe it was just trimmed and maybe they had the right to in their own rented lot?

If they were in their car to go to church, I'd say the dog certainly wasn't with them so how did he get the dog out of their home? It says they were seen leaving so they left the home.

Lots of missing details yet really. My guess would be though that the dog is dead too, sadly.

I wonder what else they found in this "bunker".

Sad ending.

I've NEVER seen cops literally tear down walls to gain access to a home instead of entering literally any other way. What the heck?
It was probably a bearcat. If you search around on Google you'll see some stories about them. "Bearcat police tear down home" might work. I don’t want to derail the thread.

They are in Redding. Whew
Ditto. My daughter and SIL. Worrywart to begin with I am, not about all things, but travel with my kids I am. And then I hear about this case right as they are going..

They are doing a few different destinations out there but two days in this area.

She wouldn't guarantee me they weren't going to drive major highways either in the more populated areas so I'm pretty sure they are.

She is to check in with me at least once daily. We shall see...

She is 38, he is a bit older.

Do we ever quit worrying.... As parents...

If you look at the pictures i think the victims property is to the right of the damaged house. It looks to be a small plot with a mobile home on it. The damaged house and the one the other side appear to be quite large residences.

It's probably one of those places that has a mix of permanent residents and temp ones and a mix of homes and trailers. There are several of those communities near all the lakes here.

I'd have to look again but yeah I thought one looked like a mobile home or perhaps a park model "camper". Park models would make more sense than a mobile home. Our campgrounds here ARE tents and RVS and park models and no permanent structures allowed generally. Now that doesn't mean there couldn't be two parts but I doubt you'd see different things all in one.

I had the impression from something at the start that he was the owner or maybe manager/caretaker. Now as such, that could well be like the one house. His upset about the tree makes me wonder the same. If he is only a neighbor he should care less if they trim a tree on their property, but if he's owner or mgr., that's different.

At our campground, the owner would have probably kicked you out had you done such. HE makes those decisions.

I should add some also have cabins they rent out.

A mobile home community is a mobile home community and an RV park is an RV park at least where I'm at. And there are tons of mobile home parks in warm places. I've looked at them a lot over the years as it was something I hoped to do one day. They usually have activities, a lot of amenities and many are for over 55 years of age.

I read this website and while I didn't go fully into each link, I looked at quite a few and I don't recall any reference to such. And the reviews mostly refer to temporary campers, one was a part of their community, became a member but he still did not stay there as in living there.

Who knows, I guess it's not like it overly matters but I'd still be surprised if someone that was only a "tenant" could put in a bunker or basement, a permanent thing like that.

They must’ve known about the bunker. This is crazy.
He was in the home and so were their bodies. He tried to shoot himself but the gun jammed LOL - not his day. Another case solved quickly by LE. Only on page 2 in this case.

From the DM article I posted upthread -

Authorities confirmed human remains were found at Sparks home on Friday after he was taken into custody following a lengthy standoff with police.
'Members of the Redlands fire department certified in confined space operations, entered the space beneath the suspects house and began to removed bags of evidence that was in that space. At this time I can confirm the presence of human remains under the house,' Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said.
'He did have a rifle and he did attempt to kill himself when police discovered him,' said Baker.
'The weapon misfired... it didn't go off.'
The motive for their disappearance is unclear, but neighbors told the local news station Sparks and the Menards were neighbors and there was tensions between them.

'When I first moved here, he told me how much he hated them, and he hated Dan specifically because Dan would cut the tree... trim the tree down,' said Tammie Wilkerson, who also lives in the community.

More human remains found at home of alleged killer of couple at nudist resort

More human remains have been found at the home of 62-year-old Redlands resident Michael Sparks, who was arrested on suspicion of murder last week in connection with an elderly couple reported missing out of Colton.

Investigators with the Redlands Police Department on Sunday were in their fourth day of an extensive search of Sparks’ property at the Olive Dell Ranch Nudist Resort when they recovered the additional remains.

The Menards and Sparks had been neighbors for years. Other nearby residents told KTLA that the trio had an ongoing feud, and that Sparks never liked the couple.

While authorities have yet to comment on how the alleged killings happened, others, like longtime friend and neighbor Irene Engkraf, have been asking their own questions.

“If [Sparks] drove that car down there, how did he come from there all the way around and up that hill without anybody seeing or knowing who drove that car,” she told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson.

Authorities say they are continuing the work of positively identifying the remains found on Spark’s property as that of the Menards.

It remains unclear if the additional human remains found on the property Sunday may be another victim or victims.

Did I say that, I know I thought it, as to what else they would find down there. I was not just thinking bodies but weapons, an arsenal, other activity or illegal activity...

But in reading further it is unsure if they are more of the Menards' remains? That would speak to what condition remains were in... On the other hand, news probably doesn't know....

Wow. So either there are others OR they were not, how do I put it nicely, whole...
