Amber Alert for abducted girl tied to Los Angeles homicide case

Authorities confirmed Tuesday morning that the Amber Alert for a 4-year-old girl abducted in Los Angeles over the weekend is also connected to a homicide investigation.

Investigators say 40-year-old Ruben Fregoso abducted the child, Daleza Fregoso, at about 4 a.m. Sunday. Although the suspect and the girl share the same last name, authorities have not confirmed their relationship.

The two were last seen near the intersection of Alsace Avenue and Ferndale Street in Los Angeles’ West Adams neighborhood, according to an Amber Alert issued by the California Highway Patrol on Monday.

Citizen video obtained by KTLA showed officers at the location Monday night. An ambulance and a stretcher were seen outside a home in the area.

A Los Angeles Police Department detective confirmed to KTLA on Tuesday that a homicide investigation is connected to the girl’s disappearance but could not provide further details.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday, the CHP announced in an update that the SUV connected to the case had been found. However, the suspect and abducted child remained missing

Investigators said Monday that the two were believed to be in Los Angeles, Riverside or San Diego counties.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult female deceased inside the residence,” police said. “Preliminary investigation indicates the victim died as a result of violence.”

Investigators identified the victim’s husband, Ruben Fregoso, as a person of interest in the investigation.

Later that day, the California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for the victim’s daughter, initially identified as Daleza Fregoso. The CHP listed the child as 4 years old, though a later LAPD release updated the spelling of her name to Daleyza Fregoso and said she is 5 years old. The child was believed to be with Ruben Fregoso.

Investigators later learned that Fregoso made statements indicating he intended to flee the country.

The Land Rover Discovery SUV they were in was reportedly found in San Diego County, near the San Ysidro crossing at the U.S.-Mexico border.

West Adams neighbors honor mother killed as her daughter is still missing

A memorial is growing outside a West Adams home after a man allegedly killed his wife and then kidnapped their young daughter.

The search continues for 40-year-old Ruben Fregoso, who is suspected of abducting 5-year-old Daleza Fregoso, according to the California Highway Patrol. The kidnapping of the young girl prompted law enforcement to issue an Amber Alert on Monday as the father and daughter were last seen during the early hours of Sunday in Los Angeles.

Sources familiar with the case tell NBC4 Investigates the father is suspected of killing his wife, who is the missing girl’s mother, inside their West Adams home. The manner of the woman's death and her identity were not disclosed.

Since learning of the grim events, neighbors have been leaving flowers and candles in honor of the victim.

“I feel my heart was broken,” said Rodrigo Lopez, who works in West Adams. “She was a nice lady, friendly all the time when they passed by and say, ‘Hi, how are you?’ Every day, every day. Monday through Friday, I worked right there and she came.”

The CHP said Fregoso’s Land Rover was located near the Mexico border, but he and the young girl were not found. Investigators say Fregoso made statements that he intended to leave the country.

Legal Analyst Royal Oakes says if Fregoso is captured in Mexico, authorities would have to go through the extradition process, which could create additional hurdles for investigators.

“The fact that he may be in Mexico with his daughter is a game changer, and not in a good way,” Oakes said. “It makes it much more complicated for American authorities. You can't just roll into a foreign country and start making arrests. You have to cooperate with local authorities.”

Meanwhile, people in the neighborhood say they’re praying for the safe return of the child as they remember her mother and the impact she had on those around her.

“We miss her,” Lopez said. “You see we put some candles and flowers. People love her. She was a nice lady, beautiful mother.”

Surveillance footage obtained by News 8 on Tuesday from a San Ysidro parking garage appeared to capture the first sighting of a missing 5-year-old girl and her suspected kidnapper.

Authorities believe Daleza Fregoso was abducted in Los Angeles by her father, Ruben Fregoso, 40.

He is also reportedly a suspect in the murder of the girl's mother.

The image shows what appears to be the suspect rolling a suitcase. He is wearing a black hat with gold stitching, a black vest over a white t-shirt and light-washed ripped jeans.

The girl is in a blue long-sleeve shirt and possibly sweatpants.

Vigil held for slain West Adams mother as her 5-year-old daughter remains missing

Family and neighbors came together in West Adams Wednesday evening to pray for the safe return of a missing 5-year-old girl and to mourn the child's slain mother.

The woman's husband, 40-year-old Ruben Fregoso, is a person of interest in her death. He is also the father of the girl and is accused of abducting the child.

Fregoso and his daughter, Daleza Fregoso, were last seen Sunday morning near Alsace Avenue and Ferndale Street. An Amber Alert was issued for the missing girl.

Marysol Garcia, the child's mother, was found dead inside her West Adams home Monday after police were called to conduct a welfare check.

"It's been terrible what's happening," neighbor Martha Guerro said at a candlelight vigil held for the mother.

Investigators believe Fregoso has taken his daughter to Mexico where he has family. His vehicle was found near the border, but there were no signs of the father and daughter.

Neighbors say the 5-year-old was the light of the neighborhood.

"The girl was so sweet, so young," neighbor Carrie Coleman said.

"I'm hoping that the baby didn't see anything that could scar her for life," Coleman added. "My prayers are just with the family."

As loved ones mourn Garcia's sudden death, they are rallying around her 14-year-old daughter, who is desperate for her little sister's safe return.

"We're hoping that they can find him and bring the little girl back because the sister needs her," Guerro said.

Authorities continue searching for the father and daughter.

A Los Angeles man accused of killing his girlfriend and fleeing to Mexico with the couple's 5-year-old daughter was charged with murder and child abuse amid an ongoing search for him and the child, according to prosecutors.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said 40-year-old Ruben Fregosojuarez -- who police previously identified as Ruben Frego -- remained at large as of Friday afternoon. He faces one count of murder, as well as one misdemeanor count of child abuse.

"The killing of a mother and the abduction of a young child is the kind of violence that shocks the entire community," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a news release.

"I cannot imagine the grief and fear that the innocent child faced as she was allegedly snatched after her mother was killed," Hochman added.

5-year-old girl found safe, murder suspect arrested in Mexico 3 weeks after Amber Alert issued in LA

A 5-year-old girl was found safe in Mexico and her father was taken into custody nearly three weeks after an Amber Alert was issued for her disappearance from the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The suspect, 40-year-old Ruben Fregoso, was taken into custody over the weekend in Mexico, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities allege he fled across the border after killing his 36-year-old girlfriend and abducting their 5-year-old child.

The child, who is a United States citizen, was found safe upon Fregoso's arrest and is in the custody of Mexican officials, LAPD said.
