More than three decades after 10-year-old George “Junior” Burdynski disappeared from his Brentwood neighborhood, sources say authorities have identified the circumstances of his death and charged a man connected to the case.
During the initial investigation, police uncovered a child sex abuse ring that was being run from a home several blocks from Burdynski’s residence. Three men — Joseph Lynch, Stephen Bruce Leak, and James Kowalski — would eventually be convicted on child sex abuse charges, but they were never definitively linked to Burdynski's disappearance until now.
According to multiple sources close to the matter, in recent months Prince George's County Police Department Cold Case detectives went back and reinterviewed everyone they could find associated with the case. That work eventually led them to a now 46-year-old man who was a previously unknown sex abuse victim of Lynch. Lynch, 61, lived just blocks from the Burdynski family.
That man admitted to detectives that he killed Junior Burdynski during a session of forced abuse at the hands of Lynch. He told detectives Lynch then disposed of Burdynski's body in a dumpster.
"That encounter involved a sexual assault and physical abuse that led to critical injuries and then the removal of Junior from the residence and the disposal of his body, said Prince George's County Police Chief George Nader. "According to the witness account, Lynch was present and ordered the sexual assault of Junior and participated in the events that followed, including the disposal and removal of Junior's body. The witness was only 13-years-old at the time and had reported being sexually and physically abused by Lynch for over four years."
Junior Burdynski's sister spoke about her brother during a news briefing by PGPD on Thursday.
"Junior, I'm sorry for what happened to you. I'm so sorry for what you had to go through. We've held onto hope for 33 years. This is not what we prayed for. This is incredibly devastating. Our hearts are shattered. We love you Junior," Virginia Burdynski said.
