OH CIERRA CHAPMAN: Missing from Trotwood, OH - 27 Dec 2022 - Age 30

Cierra Chapman.jpg

DAYTON — A large search was launched Sunday in the hopes of finding a missing woman last seen in Trotwood.

According to Dayton Police Department, Cierra Chapman was last seen in the early morning hours on Tuesday, Dec. 27 leaving her ex-boyfriend’s apartment in Trotwood.

Chapman was driving her silver Cadillac, SRX 2014, Ohio plate JVQ8612, when she left the apartment.

Her vehicle was recovered on Jewell Avenue in Middletown Friday with no sign of Chapman, according to Maj. Brian Johns, commander of Dayton’s investigations division.

Johns said crews are currently processing the vehicle for evidence.

Her disappearance has been deemed “suspicious.”

“I have no doubt that people here in Dayton, Ohio know what happened. This was an orchestrated event...this was a very well planned out incident so people know,” Johns said.

DAYTON — A new billboard has been made to help in the search for a missing Dayton woman.

News Center 7 reported that Cierra Chapman was last seen in the early morning hours on Dec. 27, 2022, leaving her ex-boyfriend’s apartment, Dayton Police said.

Her car was found on Jan. 6 in Middletown.

Investigators hope a digital billboard on Shoup Mill Road by SVG Motors will help bring Chapman home.

It also has a picture of Marilyn McCown, who has been missing since 2001.

‘I just want my baby home;’ Mother of Cierra Chapman speaks out for first time

A local mom has been missing for a year, and now her mother is speaking out for the first time about the search for her daughter.

Kelly Vann looks at photos of her daughter Cierra Chapman all the time.

“Cierra is a kind, caring person. Cierra would give her life and her right arm to help anybody she could help,” Vann said.

Chapman was also a mother of a teenage son.

“He asked me every day, have I heard anything yet? I tell him no, not yet,” Vann said.

Chapman’s 31st birthday is Sunday.

Her mother said she loved celebrating her birthday and celebrating with her sister in Cincinnati.

Instead of celebrating her birthday with her daughter this weekend, Vann will be attending a candelight vigil in her honor.

A candelight vigil will be held on Nov. 11 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Sinclair Park in Dayton.

“I figured between the time that we made the report and the time that has passed already, we would have heard something,” she said. “Now I’m at the point like I’m getting frustrated. I’m getting upset. I’m trying to spin my head around this, but ain’t nobody coming to tell me nothing. So it’s time for the mother to come from behind the walls and speak out about ‘what are y’all doing, where’s my child at?’”

A digital billboard in Dayton has Chapman’s picture on it.

It was put up in the hopes someone knows something, but so far her family has heard nothing.

“Please speak up, please let us know, call somebody, tell somebody. We all worry, we all sitting here, I cry every night,” Vann said.

So many questions. There's footage of her vehicle leaving at 4:30 am, but where's the footage showing when she arrived? How long was she there? How do the police know exactly what route was taken? Was she at J-Rocks the night she disappeared? I read a patrol officer found her car, but how long was it parked there before it was found? Why aren't they releasing the name of the ex? It seems like the police know more than they're telling, which is confusing. I understand withholding information during a homicide investigation, but as of now, Cierra is missing. Why withhold information that could help find her?

Welcome! Just wanted to say hi!

Great questions. I am not fresh on this one and am headed for work shortly but yes, this has been almost a year and where is she? And why aren't they providing more and do they have any progress??

In the meantime others are probably more up on it than I. Going to try to go read back on it later.

Police remain ‘steadfast in its commitment’ to find Cierra Chapman 1 year after disappearance

Today marks one year since a Dayton woman went missing and questions about what happened remain unanswered.

Cierra Chapman was last seen leaving the apartment of her ex-boyfriend in Trotwood in the early morning hours on Dec. 27, 2022.

A year later, investigators are still trying to figure out what happened to her, but have said her disappearance is considered suspicious.

As we reported on News Center 7 at 5:00 on Wednesday, Dayton Police Major Brian Johns said the department “is steadfast in its commitment to locate” Chapman.

“Throughout this time, our investigators have maintained close communication with her family, employing advanced technology and all available resources to not only locate Cierra but also to apprehend any individual(s) responsible for her disappearance,” Johns said.

A spokesperson for the FBI also told News Center 7 on Wednesday that there were “no new updates other than the investigation remains ongoing.”

News Center 7 spoke to Chapman’s mother, Kelly Vann, for the first time last month right around Chapman’s 31st birthday. She told our team that she felt it was time to come forward.

“I figured between the time that we made the report and the time that has passed already, we would have heard something,” she said. “Now I’m at the point like I’m getting frustrated. In February the FBI offered a $10,000 reward for information that leads to finding Chapman. In March, Miami Valley Crime Stoppers offered an additional $10,000.

They should be sharing what they can with mom and advising of what they are doing and the time it is taking. I see no reason she is a suspect and so they should be sharing with her judiciously before she breaks or cracks and is at the end of the frustration rope as she says here.

Jmo. LE like it or not need to do that, maybe they don't consider it the big part or necessary in their job but it is huge to the family who does not have answers and is grieving and for the control of the case. She should have a regular at least weekly contact with an investigator.

Even if they can't share much, that should occur and be constant and reassuring regarding their continued efforts.

Family of missing Ohio woman renews call for help to find loved one

The family of a missing Dayton woman remains hopeful information about their loved one will help find her as National Missing Children’s Day nears.

Cierra Chapman has not been seen since December 2022.

“We’re really struggling because we’re like at a standstill, nobody is saying anything,” Chapman’s aunt, Toya Gilliard, expressed.

The 31-year-old was last seen at her ex-boyfriend’s home in Trotwood near Dayton.

The Dock Ellis Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing support for minority families of missing people, first connected with Chapman’s family shortly after she went missing.

“The community needs to understand law enforcement doesn’t have a magic stick,” Dock Ellis Foundation LLC CEO Jasmine Ellis said. “They don’t have a crystal ball where they can just magically figure out where an individual is. You have to have the community play that part as well. You have to have the community speak up.”

Champman’s family is not alone in wondering where their loved one is.

The FBI shared a list of missing children ahead of National Missing Children’s Day.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office announced Friday that more than 22,000 Ohioans were reported missing last year. 17,405 of them were children.

“We all want to have hope, and we all want to keep her alive in our mind, but we want closure,” stated Gilliard. “We want to know facts. We want to know why, where, and how.”

22,000 PEOPLE IN A YEAR, the majority CHILDREN in OHIO?

They can talk of not having a magic stick and community having to do its part but I'd say uhm something is really wrong here and OHIO has a HUGE PROBLEM and what are THEY DOING ABOUT IT? That is a RIDICULOUS number of children and adults in a year.

Unsolved Ohio: Woman missing since 2022 under ‘very suspicious’ circumstances

In December 2022, an Ohio woman was last seen in security camera footage at an ex-boyfriend’s apartment complex. While her car was found a short time later in a town she had no known connections to, she remains missing with police calling her disappearance “very suspicious.”

Cierra Chapman, a mother of one son, vanished at 30 years old. At the time of her disappearance, she was living with her sister on Cambridge Avenue in Dayton.

“Cierra was a lovely mother,” said Cierra’s aunt, Regina Chapman. “She was family-oriented. We did a lot of vacation times, spent time with the family. … She loves working on cars. She loves her animals.”

Cierra’s ex-boyfriend gave a verbal statement over the phone but had not seen police in person as of January 2023 despite them asking him to meet. The Dayton Police Department told NBC4 they are limited in the information and updates they can share due to the ongoing investigation. Cierra has not been in contact with anybody, and there has been no activity on her bank account since the day she was last captured on camera, police said at the news conference.

Regina said Cierra would have never left her son, who is now 16 years old. She asked anyone who may have information about her niece’s disappearance to come forward and contact law enforcement so her family can get closure.

“I worry a lot and every time I hear anything it makes me nervous,” Regina said. “If I hear they found remains, I get nervous. When her son calls me and talks to me, he’s missing his mom. He wants his mom and that’s the hardest part.”

The FBI is assisting with the investigation and offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the recovery of Cierra as well as information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for her disappearance.

It’s been 2 years: Where is Cierra Chapman?

Federal and local law enforcement officials are still seeking information to locate Cierra Chapman.

Chapman was last seen on the early morning of Dec. 27, 2022 at an apartment on Autumn Woods Drive in Trotwood. She was reported missing two days later, and her vehicle was discovered a week-and-a-half later in Middletown.

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered by the FBI for information which leads to the recovery of Chapman and information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Chapman’s disappearance.

‘I’m going to do y’all like I did Cierra;’ Man tied to Cierra Chapman arrested for Sunoco shootout

The man accused of getting into a shootout at a Dayton Sunoco gas station is now facing a federal charge.

Walter Rodgers, 35, has been charged with illegally possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony crime, according to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio’s office. He was previously convicted of aggravated burglary and abduction.

As previously reported, Dayton Police responded to a shooting at the Sunoco gas station on E. Third Street on the afternoon of September 2.

“Rodgers allegedly ran inside the gas station after being shot at, retrieved a firearm from his bag and exited the Sunoco to return fire,” a release from the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio’s office stated.

Rodgers was shot during the shootout and taken from the scene to Miami Valley Hospital. He was arrested at the hospital and booked in the Montgomery County Jail on September 6, according to online jail records.

A gun Rodgers reportedly possessed was found at the scene, covered in blood.

During the shootout, Rodgers allegedly stated, “I’m going to do y’all like I did Cierra,” according to court documents.

A spokesperson for the Southern District of Ohio’s office said this was a potential reference to Rodgers’ former girlfriend, Cierra Chapman.

As News Center 7 has previously reported, Chapman was reported missing in December 2022 and hasn’t been found.

Rodgers faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of this new charge.

DAYTON — A dangerous and near-deadly shootout is highlighting the case of a woman who has been missing for more than two years.

Cierra Chapman went missing two days after Christmas in 2022.

As News Center 7 has previously reported, police said she went to her ex-boyfriend’s Trotwood apartment to retrieve some of her belongings. Her car was recorded leaving there, but officers couldn’t tell who was driving.

“They just want answers,” Michelle McCown-Luster, Director of the Dock Ellis Foundation for Missing Persons, said. “They hope this is the break they’ve been waiting for.”

McCown-Luster has been working with Chapman’s family. They are as surprised as anyone that a gas station shootout could be connected to Chapman, but that’s just what federal prosecutors revealed on Monday.

Dayton Police previously told News Center 7 that the gunfire on September 2 happened both inside and outside the convenience store at the Sunoco on E. Third Street.

Paramedics took one suspect to the hospital. They also took two other people into custody at a nearby house; one was a witness, and the other was arrested.

News Center 7’s Mike Campbell checked court records on Tuesday and saw that detectives released the 25-year-old man from jail two days later and dropped his charges.

On Monday, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio’s office announced that the man hospitalized, 35-year-old Waler Rodgers, was now facing federal gun charges.

In court filings, federal investigators stated that witnesses heard Rodgers saying, “I’m going to do y’all like I did Cierra.”

Federal investigators believed that the statement likely referred to Chapman, his former girlfriend.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, Dayton Police said they’ve reviewed the witness statement mentioned in the federal court documents.

Chapman’s loved ones have prayed for answers for nearly three years. Their spokesperson said they are trying to avoid a rollercoaster of emotions.

“You’re hoping, you’re praying, you’re crying, you’re screaming, and then all of the sudden, it’s not the break,” McCown-Luster said.

Police repeatedly tried to convince Rodgers to come downtown to talk to them about Chapman’s disappearance. There’s still no guarantee he’ll tell federal investigators anything he may, or may not, know about the case.

As previously reported, there is a $20,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Chapman and information that leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person or people responsible for her disappearance

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A shootout last week at an area gas station has brought the case of a missing woman back into the spotlight.

Investigators hope the possible new lead can help them close the search for Cierra Chapman, the woman who went missing almost three years ago.

Walter Rodgers was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 2, for allegedly injuring another man during a shootout at a Sunoco gas station on East Third Street in Dayton.

During that shootout, court documents say Rodgers yelled, “I’m going to do y’all like I did Cierra.”

Rodgers had been Cierra Chapman’s former boyfriend before she went missing.

Officers arrived a short time later and took him into custody.

Rodgers appeared in court Tuesday in a wheelchair after being hit during the shootout last week. He has been charged federally as a felon in illegal possession of a firearm.

It is currently unknown whether he will be charged in relation to the Sunoco shooting itself. The case has been presented to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

According to court documents and surveillance footage, Rodgers ran inside the Sunoco after being shot at first after getting into an argument. He then reached into his bag for a gun, ran outside the gas station and returned fire.

Rodgers was previously convicted of aggravated burglary and abduction in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. He was told Tuesday that he could face up to 15 more years in the federal system if convicted.

Chapman was last seen on the early morning of Dec. 27, 2022, at an apartment on Autum Woods Drive in Trotwood.

She was reported missing two days later, and her car was discovered nearly two weeks later in Middletown.

Her disappearance has been investigated as suspicious.

Those who are helping look for Chapman say they hope this will lead to some answers.

“Hopefully this one will lead somewhere because I know this family, they are tired,” said Michelle McCown-Luster, director of missing persons for the Dock Ellis Foundation. “They want an answer so bad. And you know, just imagine living your life not knowing where your loved one is.

“You don’t know if they’re cold, they’re hungry, if they’re alive. So your mind always wonders. I just want to know where she is. We just want her home. Give her a proper burial. If death has is what took place. But we’re tired.”

The Dock Ellis Foundation has been working with law enforcement to find Chapman since she disappeared three years ago. It says it has been in contact with Chapman’s family, and they’re hoping for answers that will put her case to rest.

Dayton Police said they are committed to locating Chapman. The FBI and Crime Stoppers are each offering $20,000 rewards for information that leads to locating her or those responsible for her disappearance.

Rodgers remains in custody of the U.S. Marshall Service until his next court appearance scheduled for Friday

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WXIX) - The investigation continues following an arrest as police seek information on a 31-year-old woman who has been missing since December 2022, the Dayton Police Department said.

Ciara Chapman was last seen at her ex-boyfriend’s home in Trotwood near Dayton before police discovered her vehicle near Middletown about a month later in January 2023.

Meanwhile, Walter Rodgers, 35, was arrested last week in connection with a shootout at a Sunoco gas station in Dayton on Sept. 2 in which he allegedly said, “I’m going to do ya’ll like I did Cierra,” possibly referring to the missing woman and his former girlfriend, according to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.

Rodgers was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm after previously being convicted of burglary and abduction, prosecutors said.

Lt. Eric Sheldon of the Dayton police did not identify any individual but said that a witness involved in Chapman’s disappearance was recently interviewed.

“As with any new piece of evidence, this recent statement is being thoroughly vetted and investigated,” Lt. Sheldon said in a news release. “The involved witness has been interviewed. As with any open investigation, protecting the integrity of the investigation is important so limited information can be released.”

DPD continues to inquire about Chapman’s possible whereabouts, with the FBI offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to her recovery or identification, arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for her disappearance.

“We all want to have hope, and we all want to keep her alive in our mind, but we want closure,” Tonya Gilliard, Chapman’s aunt, said last year. “We want to know facts. We want to know why, where, and how.”

Anyone with information regarding this case can contact DPD at (937) 333-2677 (COPS).

Dayton police are investigating a comment made during a shootout that could be linked to the disappearance of Cierra Chapman, who’s been missing for nearly three years.

According to federal court records, Walter Rodgers was at a Sunoco gas station when he said, “I’m going to do ya’ll like I did Cierra,” during a shootout in Dayton on Sept. 2.
A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Ohio stated Rodgers was potentially referring to his ex-girlfriend, Cierra Chapman.

Chapman was last seen early Dec. 27, 2022, at an Autumn Woods Drive apartment in Trotwood.
The Dayton Police Department issued a statement on her case Tuesday.

“The Dayton Police Department is actively investigating the disappearance of Cierra Chapman as a missing person,” said Lt. Eric Sheldon. “As with any new piece of evidence, this recent statement is being thoroughly vetted and investigated. The involved witness has been interviewed.”

Chapman was meeting an ex-boyfriend to exchange items before she went missing, Maj. Brian Johns previously said.

Police wouldn’t confirm if Rodgers was the ex-boyfriend Chapman was meeting.

“As with any open investigation, protecting the integrity of the investigation is important so limited information can be released,” Sheldon said.

Chapman was reported missing two days later, on Dec. 29, 2022.
On Jan. 6, 2023, Middletown police found her 2014 Cadillac SRX parked on gravel in the area of Jewell and Shelley streets in Middletown.

Her purse and cellphone were in the SUV, and other personal belongings were in the trunk.

There wasn’t anything in the SUV that indicated foul play, but Johns said investigators were concerned about her safety.

“She didn’t go missing by accident,” Johns said. “This is a very well-planned out, well-orchestrated incident and people know.”

Rodgers was also previously linked to the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman five years ago.

He was charged with two counts each of murder and felonious assault and one count of having weapons while under disability in Dayton Municipal Court for the death of Nascia Goodwin.

Charges were dismissed when the case was presented to a grand jury, which declined to indict Rodgers.

Goodwin was found shot to death in a grassy lot next to 926 Gard Ave. on Aug. 26, 2020.

As of Tuesday, Rodgers is not facing any charges related to Goodwin or Chapman. He has one count of illegally possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony pending in federal court.

If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Rodgers is being held in the Montgomery County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

Anyone with information in Chapman’s or Goodwin’s case can call Dayton police at 937 333-2677 (C0PS) or Miami Valley Crime Stoppers at 937-222-7867 (STOP). They can also submit tips online at miamivalleycrimestoppers.com

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) -- Dayton police have released additional information regarding recently arrested Walter Rodgers and a missing person's investigation.

As previously covered, Rodgers is facing federal charges after U.S. Attorney Dominick Gerace said he was involved in the Sept. 2 shootout on East Third Street at Sunoco.

During the incident, Gerace said that Rodgers allegedly made claims that insinuated he was involved in the disappearance of his former girlfriend, Cierra Chapman.

Chapman has been missing for nearly three years.

The Dayton Police Department (DPD) said it is actively investigating her disappearance as a missing persons case. Furthermore, they said that the statement allegedly made by Rodgers is being vetted and thoroughly investigated.

DPD reported that they have spoken with an involved witness.

If anyone has information regarding the disappearance of Chapman, they should contact DPD at 937-333-2677 or call Crime Stoppers at 937-222-STOP to remain anonymous. You are also able to submit a tip on the Crime Stoppers website.

Police are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to Chapman's recovery, along with the identification, arrest and conviction of all parties involved
