Montville, N.J. Police Asking For Public’s Help Finding Missing Mother Cheng Hsiao And 2 Young Children

The were concerns Monday over the welfare of a mother and her two young children.

The three family members from Montville were reported missing Sunday, CBS2’s Nick Caloway reported.

The mother and her two kids were last seen on Saturday at the family’s home. The husband reported them missing Sunday and now police are asking for help finding them.

The missing woman is 32-year-old Cheng Hsiao. Her two sons have been identified as 3-year-old Ethan and 2-year-old Ian. It is believed they left the family’s home on Old Lane sometime Saturday morning or afternoon. The husband and father came home and they were gone, so he reported them missing, police said.

Police are really hoping someone knows where they are.

“We have a 3-year-old and a 2-year-old. The weather has been cold the last couple of days, so we just want to make sure they’re safe and sound and well taken care of. It’s the utmost importance to us in our community here to make sure we find them,” Montville Police Chief Andrew Caggiano said.

The police chief told Caloway there’s no reason to suspect foul play. They are just really hoping to find them safe.

Montville police search for missing mother, 2 children; say they may be in danger

Authorities are searching for a mother and her two children who went missing in Montville on Sunday, and say that they fear that they are in danger.

The case has now reached a federal level, according to Prosecutor Robert Carroll.

"We are very concerned about the two young children,” He says. “I want to mention also that they are not in any trouble. Neither the mom nor the two children. We want to try to get their location and find out if they're safe. That's our primary concern right now."

I wonder how and why it reached a federal level? I went into the article and that doesn't say either. That's interesting because one would think they are with their mother, it seems unclear there is even anything wrong and it doesn't sound custodial in the sense that her husband came home so they are married and either could take the kids anywhere. What about that would invoke a federal level? I mean even if she crossed state lines she has every right to take her children on a trip, etc. legally.

I pray they are safe and the more attention the better federally and all but what tripped the federal level thing? There is some reason that isn't stated. Imo.

My questions:

No vehicle?
Why reported missing the next day?
Any relationship issues?
Who heard from Cheng last, besides hubby?
Where was hubby from 6 am Saturday to when they were reported missing?

They went missing from 6:30 to 4:00 it says so he could have been working or something. I don't like it when the spouse is the last one to see them but it is often the case. So if he did something to them he had from 6:30 Sat. to Sunday morning. He waited to call until Sunday morning which doesn't entirely seem odd to me, she is their mother and an adult so why would one think necessarily she or the kids are in any danger right away?

But waiting could be because he did it as well. He may even have an alibi from 6:30 to 4:00 that the police checked out but not after getting home.

It doesn't mention a car either way does it? I guess I assumed she had a car and they were a two car family like most these days. If so, one would think they would put out an alert for the car though.

Right now, I don't see any reason to suspect him because they really haven't given any info at all. It implies they were married and all was normal but it doesn't say that. It sounds like he would have left the kids and her that morning from home.

That's a long window of time, did any neighbors see them that day, any security cams...? What did he do Saturday night before calling police? I think any normal person would have been trying to call her cell phone (assuming she had one) and her friends, family, etc. to see if she was with them or they had seen her. So he should have been on the phone that night, easy enough to check.

I guess it is conceivable that he got home, he didn't think anything of them not being there and he ate some supper, watched some TV and fell asleep. If he was working, that's a fairly long day. He woke up the next morning and knew when they were not home that that is not normal. This is total speculation on my part.

The reason I think work is he must have left at 6:30 so let's figure that puts him at work somewhere at 7. He is home by 4 it seems so let's figure he left work at 3:30. So 7 to 3:30 is 8.5 hours. With a 1/2 hour lunch, that's a pretty typical work shift. They also give such even times on the half hour and hour for this window. Maybe a bit too precise in fact... Does it always take him 1/2 hour to get to work and back. Probably what he guessed at this point as to about when he left and got home.

She also, if he was working, and if for instance she was leaving him, would have know where he was that day and that she had time before he came home. There isn't any indication though that she like took a bunch of things or anything.

At this point, I don't see a direction as to what happened but he was the last to see her and there is big window of time he has.

So not much is hinted at other than the federal level thing. That bugs me.

Cheng Hsiao, 39, and her children Ethan, 3, and Ian, 2, were reported missing on Sunday.

It's believed they were last known to be at their home in Montville Township, about 40 miles from New York City, on Saturday, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release.

Authorities believe the mother and children left the home between 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday. The prosecutor's office said "there is concern for their well-being," but did not provide further details when contacted by NBC News on Thursday.

So what’s going on? We have a woman and her two children that have unexplainably disappeared and no reports on it? No public outcry? No information on what they were wearing or if they were driving or what? This is alarming.
Add to what you just said "federal level" involvement for some reason and there seems to be something they know and some reason this doesn't seem "pushed" to the public.

Found!
Well thank God. I'm going to guess she crossed state lines and they knew it but also had reason to believe she did it willingly...

It reminds me of that Wisconsin one some time back it was mother and daughter, last I knew they were divorcing and I wonder if that ever finalized. I hope she didn't go back to him. HInts of major control issues there.

Not sure on this one. She had a right to leave with her children but it doesn't mean she isn't in for a major custody battle/divorce, he has rights to them too but she didn't break the law.

I'm glad they are safe. So it does appear she left on a day she knew he would be working or somewhere. And probably planned it.

Well that was weird. Now I have to wonder if it wasn’t a planned separation. Whatever it was, it’s between them and I’m just glad they are OK.

I don't think he planned it or wanted it as he called them in missing I think. I too am glad they are all safe. I suspect next will be a divorce and custody battle and that she may have taken them out of state. Legally.

Maybe he called them in missing thinking they would find her and the kids and bring her back, hard to say. Meaning he may have known or suspected she left of her own accord.

Their own personal business definitely it is now. I almost suspect she told someone, maybe a friend. And LE found she let someone know where she was going and did not want him to know. Therefore no big search... Or she contacted authorities to not have efforts and money exhausted searching for them.

I meant a one-sided separation plan. Didn’t make that clear!

Gotcha. I thought you meant like they agreed to separate. Obvious from my post I took it wrong.

Either way, they are safe right? Clearly not an easy road ahead most likely for this family but as you said and I feel the same that is their business. I think the minute or not long after he called it in, she at least had told someone or did not let LE waste time and resources making this news and a higher alert to find them, and that explains why it wasn't making news or they weren't pushing harder.
