Mother missing for a week, family searching for answers

It’s been a week since an Indianapolis mother went missing. Now family and friends of Chenell Gilbert will pass out about 2,000 flyers including in the Glennwoods subdivision — an area near where they believe she was last seen.

This case all started after no one saw or heard from the 42-year-old mother on Tuesday, June 9. Her daughter used the "Find my Phone" feature on her mother’s cell and located her car. But the homeowner near where the phone was pinged told Gilbert’s family that she drove to the house but never came inside. When the Gilbert's family asked to take a look around inside, he refused so they ended up calling for police.

According to Gilbert's daughter, the same man refused to let officers inside his home to look around.

Family, friends search for Indianapolis mother missing over a week

An Indianapolis mother has been missing for over a week, and her family and friends are desperately trying to find her.

Chenell Gilbert, 42, was last seen around Girls School and Rockville Roads on June 9.

“This is something that she would not do. She stays connected with her daughters and with her family,” Danyette Smith, a family advocate, said. “They’re afraid. They’re frightened… it’s beyond worried.”

Daughter breaks silence 2 weeks after mother’s disappearance

Tuesday marks two weeks since Chenell “Renee” Gilbert went missing on the city’s west side.

The last time anyone heard from Gilbert was at 6:18 a.m. June 9.

For the first time since her mom’s disappearance, Cierra McCaleb broke her silence in an interview with News 8.

McCaleb said on the day her mother went missing she was away at Indiana State University, where she goes to college. She got a call from her 19-year-old sister, who was concerned after not hearing from their mother for several hours.

The girls tracked Gilbert’s cellphone location, which showed her to be at an address in the Sungate neighborhood just off Girls School Road. Cierra immediately recognized the address, and said it was her mother’s ex-boyfriend’s home.

Cierra’s younger sister decided to drive to the location her phone showed, and Cierra remained on FaceTime the entire time.

“She was just like asking if she could go in the house, and he wouldn’t let her,” McCaleb said.

At that point, Cierra said, her sister hung up and called police.

“As soon as she seen, ‘OK, her car is here,’ he won’t let her in. We can’t find our mom so she was going to file a missing person report at that point.”

IMPD’s report from that day confirms Gilbert’s car was parked at the house. Police have said little about the case, only that it is an ongoing investigation.

Family continues searching for missing mom, 15 days later

It’s been 15 days a woman in Indianapolis known as a substitute teacher, mother and grandmother was last seen.

Chenell Gilbert, 42, was last seen during the early morning hours of June 9th in the Sungate neighborhood on the westside near Rockville and South Girl’s School Road, she hasn’t been seen since.

For the past two weeks, family, friends, and strangers have made strides of their own by posting flyers, knocking on doors, and asking for information. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has multiple investigators from different units also searching.

Police tell us they are actively searching and following up on leads. They also say homicide detectives are assisting which isn’t uncommon in a missing person case.

In the meantime, they asking anyone with any information about Chenell’s whereabouts to contact Crimestoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).

This is such an odd one. I know (or actually don't know really) it takes some amount of reason to get a warrant but one would think it would almost be enough? Her car is there, her phone pinged there, they know or knew immediately whose address it was and there is a connection of this man to their mother.... I cannot even imagine what this is like for her children...

Search continues for Chenell Gilbert, who went missing June 9

Nearly six weeks have passed since the last time anyone saw Chenell Gilbert.

Daughter pleads for help to find missing Indy mom

The last time anyone saw or heard from Chenell Gilbert, 43, was on June 9 on the city’s west side. Gilbert was last seen in a neighborhood near Girls School and Rockville Roads before 6:30 a.m.

Her family said she was visiting an ex-boyfriend’s home on Mars Drive. That house is where investigators found her car. They also pinged her cell phone at that location. But after searching the house, they did not find her.

“The further time goes, it’s just hard,” Cierra McCaleb, her oldest daughter, said. “Hard is not even the word but that’s just all I have right now to say.”

IMPD homicide detectives are looking into this missing persons case amid a heavy case load. Dan Rosenberg of CrimeStoppers acknowledges how thorough that unit is.

“I think it’s to their great credit they take on even missing persons ones that we can’t prove that there is a homicide yet,” Rosenberg said.

CrimeStoppers is hopeful someone will come forward with a tip that solves this case, and brings closure to this family.

“Every little piece of information, and many times cases turn on that one piece of information that somebody has that they don’t even realize is important.” Rosenberg said.

crickets...
There's a FB post from someone speaking for the family that indicates the bf was taken in for questioning but lawyered up as soon as he found out homicide detectives were involved in the investigation. Possibly rumor - please delete if not ok. Friend that posted is Danyette Smith and post is several weeks old. I could find nothing more recent than August 11 in MSM.

The lack of publicity may mean that detectives are hot on the trail and maybe the family knows this, so they're laying low.

Well I spoke to soon...

here are new developments in the case of missing mother and grandmother Chenell Gilbert. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) tells us this is now a homicide investigation.

Police say Gilbert was last seen June 9th on the west side near Rockville and South Girl’s School Road in the Sungate Community. Since then her family has been searching desperately for answers to her whereabouts.

“Well the last time I talked to her was maybe a day before her disappearance,” said her aunt Sherri Ross.

Just after 6 a.m. on June 9th, Chenell Gilbert vanished. Her two daughters began to worry after she didn’t return that afternoon which is out of the ordinary. That’s when they called their aunt.

“It was just unbelievable. And when they told that they had traced her cell phone back to her ex-boyfriend’s house that’s when I became a little concerned,” said Ross.

Indy has so much crime, I came to realize that when following Amiah's case. I could not believe the local headlines almost each and every day. Many local commenters had opinions about the city compared to what it once was and of the PD as well. I don't know myself but I can say one thing with certainty, the amount of crime there and murders would swamp most agencies no matter one's opinion of the agency.

I hope this family gets justice and that their mother is found.

Another year and Chenell is still missing. Nothing in the news. She's still listed with ISP and NamUs.

This is from May 2022.
On June 9, 2020, Chenell Gilbert was last seen on Indy’s west side, near Rockville and South Girls School Road. Based on our previous and extensive reporting on Gilbert’s case, her car was last seen in the driveway of her ex-boyfriend’s home in the Sungate subdivision.

IMPD has presumed she is dead, and investigators are currently looking at the case as a homicide. Today, her whereabouts are still unknown.

Skimming this to recall, it reminded me I used to do a lot of searching, links, info, trying to help when life was different.

Sad that nothing has come. I used to bump more cases too that I could recall that go by the wayside.

A good bump. It never did get enough attention imo.
