Investigators from multiple counties are looking into a missing persons case involving a Navarre woman, Cassi Carli, and her daughter, Saylor. Carli’s father reported them missing yesterday after they failed to show up as expected Sunday evening for a child custody exchange at Juana’s Pagodas. Sources close to the family say Carli’s car was located at Navarre Beach Boat Ramp, where investigators were on scene earlier this morning. Any information should be reported to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Department via 850-983-1190.

‘Agonizing’: Cassie Carli’s family gets update on ‘unacceptable’ autopsy process, investigation into Florida mom’s death

The family of Cassie Carli, a Florida mother found dead in April after disappearing on the Florida Panhandle, has received an update on the lengthy autopsy process in Alabama that they are criticizing as “agonizing” and “unacceptable.”

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences informed the Carli family the autopsy is expected to be completed in another 30 to 60 days, which means Florida investigators should have the results between late September and the end of October.

“The wait has been agonizing,” Cassie’s sister Raeann told WFLA.com. “The [Carli] family is struggling to heal. [Cassie’s] daughter has so many questions and we can’t even provide answers or solace without knowing what’s going on.”

Carli’s ex-boyfriend, Marcus Spanevelo, was arrested and charged in connection with Cassie’s disappearance, although despite a high level of confidence from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, the 34-year-old has not been charged in Carli’s death.

Florida investigators say they are awaiting the autopsy results and clarity on Carli’s cause of death before proceeding with additional charges.

“We strive every day to complete each case in a timely manner, while insuring all necessary and comprehensive Forensic testing is conducted with the highest quality and in compliance with international laboratory standards,” an Alabama DFS spokesperson wrote to the Carli family.

Spanevelo, who remains in jail, faces charges of tampering with evidence, giving false information concerning a missing persons investigation and destruction of evidence connected to allegedly disposing of Carli’s phone.

“We expected Marcus to remain tight lipped on the situation, but never thought we’d hear so little answers from law enforcement almost five months in,” said Raeann. “Our primary focus is to of course bring justice for Cassie and begin healing. We look forward to having certainty Marcus will be held accountable so we can move forward with healing.”

I can totally relate to this. At least he is in jail though. We watched ours free running around with no charges and had to wait on autopsy results. While the initial autopsy is fairly quick, another part of it was sent out and they wouldn't charge until they had those results and knew they backed up proving what they already "knew". It was sent out to an expert coroner the county uses/contracts with who also does work for many other area agencies in more than one state. It was agonizing and despite repeatedly asking, all the detective could do was explain to me they have to wait in line like everyone else, in other words, there is no moving one case to the top of the pile over another, many homicides from different areas used the expert top notch respected coroner and they wanted her also for her expertise and testimony in court if needed.

I think we waited four months almost to the day and that was the earliest I was told it would be turned around most likely and that it could go six months even or more.
It's very hard but as hard as it is, it means they are getting solid serious evidence that they can use in court and the better it is done and the more possible accident or defense theories the results can debunk the better. Not sure what all they are looking at but if it is head, they can do opinions on force, velocity, types of skull fractures, etc.

I'm sure they are dotting I's and crossing T's. And they need to. This man will fight this and go to trial or seems the type so they need to be ready for whatever defense they try.

Attorneys representing Cassie Carli's ex-boyfriend file request to limit witness testimony
Attorneys representing the ex-boyfriend of missing Navarre woman Cassie Carli filed a request to the courts this week.

Attorneys representing Carli's ex-boyfriend Marcus Spanevelo want to limit testimony they're anticipating from prosecutors' witnesses.

The filing argues the state should not be allowed to have any witnesses testify in relation to allegations of kidnapping, murder and manslaughter.

Currently, Spanevelo is charged with tampering with evidence and obstructing a criminal investigation in connection to Carli's death.

Spanevelo is not charged in Carli's death.

Spanevelo's attorneys say testimony that elaborates on uncharged crimes should be inadmissible due to the danger of unfair prejudice by the jury.

Just saw a headline that her death was not ruled a homicide but "undetermined". Hmmm. WFLA news. Don't have time to watch it.

They must have anticipated or hoped to file murder charges in Florida (but hold him in FL on the more minor charge) but then with the return of "undetermined" the more serious charges became the ones in AL? That's what my guess is.

i was wondering if it looked like she was killed at another location and the farm was a secondary site
Ah. Yeah that's a thought. Some think she died in the trailer or at least that is discussed I know. Clearly he had to nab her at their meeting site or get her to go with him willingly and per her family and friends she would never have went with him willingly.

do you think she knew him? maybe like he was familiar. a coworker, regular at a job, etc? people are likely to follow familiarity but thats not guaranteed. knowing shes a woman she probably had some fear in her because naturally she has to watch out for danger.
