Texas teen missing since Christmas Eve believed to be in 'imminent danger': Sheriff

A Texas teen who has been missing since Christmas Eve was last seen leaving her home that morning and is believed to be in "imminent danger," law enforcement officials said on Sunday.

An unidentified person believed to be 19-year-old Camila Mendoza Olmos was captured on security video around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday searching her vehicle for an unidentified item, according to a statement from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said they believe Mendoza Olmos left the residence on foot since her vehicle remained there and that the only items she took with her were her car keys and possibly her driver's license.

Her last known location was the 11000 block of Caspian Spring in northwest Bexar County, the sheriff's office said.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told ABC News on Sunday that sheriff's deputies and volunteers have been searching around the clock for Mendoza Olmos.

Multiple agencies have joined the search, including the FBI, which is providing technical assistance, and the Department of Homeland Security, which is monitoring border crossings and international travel, Salazar said.

"We definitely don't want to miss anything," Salazar said. "The ground search is somewhat limited to a couple of square miles. We're also not ruling out that this case may take us outside the borders of the continental United States."

Salazar said investigators have not ruled anything out in the teenager's disappearance, including kidnapping, human trafficking and the potential she left on her own accord.

Salazar said Mendoza Olmos recently went through a romantic breakup, but authorities said the breakup was mutual and don't suspect anything "nefarious" was involved, saying everyone close to her is cooperating.

"Camila’s mother stated that Camila normally goes for a morning walk; however, she became concerned when Camila did not return within a reasonable period of time," according to the sheriff's office.

Salazar confirmed that Mendoza Olmos was not detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), despite her being a U.S. citizen.

"That was a personal concern. So, I had it checked to make sure that there were no stops, no detentions, and that she's not somewhere in a federal detention facility. That is something we needed to check," Salazar said.

Salazar noted that it was unusual for Mendoza Olmos to leave her phone at home, saying she leads an active lifestyle and it's "highly unusual" that she hasn’t returned.

"That's why we're working basically around the clock on this case," Salazar said.

While Salazar would not disclose some details of Mendoza Olmos's disappearance, he said there is enough information to suggest she is in "imminent danger."

Salazar requested help from the community in the search, asking neighbors of Mendoza Olmos to check their surveillance cameras for any footage of the teenagers.

What we know about the disappearance of Camila Mendoza Olmos, last seen in northwest Bexar County

Search efforts continue in the disappearance of Camila Mendoza Olmos, who was last seen on Christmas Eve.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar is expected to provide information about ongoing search efforts at 3 p.m. Monday.

Mendoza Olmos was last seen at 6:58 a.m. Wednesday, outside of the family home, in the 11000 block of Caspian Spring in northwest Bexar County. She was wearing a black North Face sweater with baby blue accents, baby blue shorts and white shoes.

Her phone and all belongings, except her car key, are still at home, including her car. Her friends said she usually goes for walks, but also always has her phone with her.

The 19-year-old may be in danger, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Javier Salazar said she has a history of suicidal ideation, but he wants her to know that there is help.

“She’s got people here that love her very much and are more than willing to help her deal with whatever she may be going through right now,” Salazar told ABC News.

Salazar said Mendoza Olmos recently went through a romantic breakup, but authorities said the breakup was mutual and they don’t suspect anything “nefarious” was involved, saying everyone close to her is cooperating.

Camila’s mother was present on Monday, helping with the search.

“It’s not Christmas for me; it’s not for us. It is the most terrible day of my life,” said Rosario Olmos.

Some family members drove 17 hours from California to Texas to help search for her along with more than 100 other people, according to Camila’s dad, Alfonso Mendoza.

Camila’s brother, Carlos Mendoza, flew back into town as soon as he learned his sister was missing on Christmas Eve.

“We’ve been searching on foot within a three-mile radius,” Carlos Mendoza said over the weekend. “I want her to come back.”

Multiple agencies have joined the search, including the FBI, which is providing technical assistance, and the Department of Homeland Security, which is monitoring border crossings and international travel, Salazar said.

“We definitely don’t want to miss anything,” Salazar said. “The ground search is somewhat limited to a couple of square miles. We’re also not ruling out that this case may take us outside the borders of the continental United States.

I read about this. Just vanished. Took her keys, nothing else. Seems very nefarious. That early in the morning Christmas Eve Day. She was meeting someone she knew. Said the break up was mutual. But that could be a factor.

I saw a couple of things on this today. I posted one in the current crime news thread. it has also been said she had expressed suicidal ideas/tendencies. Just adding that so it is known.

The DL is strange if she took it with. Needing ID for what...? To cross the border?

The car keys are likely so she could unlock her car to look for whatever she was looking for. I'd think.

Newly obtained dashboard camera video may show a Texas teenage girl right when she went missing on Christmas Eve, authorities said.

Camila Mendoza Olmos, 19, has been missing since Wednesday morning, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators previously released security footage showing a person they said they believe to be Mendoza Olmos searching her car in her driveway around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Now, investigators have a dash cam video from someone who was driving to work on Wednesday morning and passed a woman walking by herself, and that person may be Mendoza Olmos, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a news conference on Monday.

The video was taken a few blocks from her home, he said.

The sheriff added that he couldn't say with 100% certainty that Mendoza Olmos was in the video, but he said the clothing description matches up.

Asked why his office believes she might be in imminent danger, Salazar told CNN, “there’s some information I can’t divulge … due to the sensitivity of it.”
“We consider imminent danger to be anything from self-harm all the way through someone actually kidnapping Camila, and all of those possibilities exist at present,” said Salazar, noting that the missing woman had previously spoken of suicide. “We can’t rule anything out at this point in the investigation.”

after reading this article there are many things the mom is saying that raise some flags for me. First she was sleeping with her mom. A bit unusual since she's 19. Mom also states “I put it to charge and went out to look for her. I thought I would find her like other times, walking, and we would come home together,”

Have to read the article yet but yes, I heard the mom said that even that early in the morning she'd usually go find her and they'd walk home together. That raised a red flag to me, not as a mom who did anything to her, but an overprotective helicopter mom. She now is on video, Camila, walking on a street, or it appears to be her.

I think this is likely an intentionally missing girl but I'm not going to not say that I pray she is safe and that she may not have met up with the wrong type of person of her own accord.

Seems to me she took her ID on purpose but left her cell phone on purpose...

There is another girl missing from the very same county 17, getting no notice at all, around the same time. According to a post I saw. Haven't had a chance to look into it though.

Okayyyy. I've read it. if the sleeping together is from the size of the place, I get it. I have slept with my daughter on rare occasion in my one bedroom apt., more typically I take the couch, she takes the bed but if talking in bed, on rare occasion. Not routinely EVER. As adults. I've also shared a bed with my mom but not for some years but like when we visited her mom. Or in hotel rooms with any of the above. Two doubles, three or four people, of course. We did it when my grandbaby was airlifted and in the hospital.

However, when you put that together with mom finding her on walks and then walking her home, it sounds like overprotective parenting. NOT that there couldn't have been a reason for it. Maybe Camila was depressed, suicidal, etc. so they were overly worried so she kept her in her bed, checked up on her, etc.

It sounds though like helicopter parenting. Some of the cases we have seen are that, and the adult child did leave because even as an adult they were still under strict rules and supervision. I have to wonder if that's the case here. NOT that the child maybe didn't need such and were a problem themselves.

It would be the best outcome and mean she is alive. Hopefully.

Many times if somebody is presenting as suicidal and until treatment can be provided, many are suggested to sleep with that individual. That's kind of the vibe I'm getting from this with the wording of her situation of disappearance.

Yes but that's if she is truly suicidal and not putting on as some do. She clearly had her own room as her phone was in it allegedly so she was alone at times.

I'm getting a Carly Russell vibe here and I hope I am wrong, I really do. And yet if right, it would mean she's safe so maybe I hope I'm right.

I'm not excluding she may have been in contact with someone and met up with and connected with them but she most definitely left on her own. Imo.

I know many kids that have went through this exact scenario. They presented as suicidal, as in saying they are, but there was no room for treatment and/or insurance issues and the parents were told to sleep with them until they can get treatment. The only way to know if they are truly suicidal is after they have actually attempted it and considered "just putting on" as you call it.

Yes, it's a tough one.

Also when one has never raised teens, it is a learning process imo because every generation well is different. Right?

I pray she is okay It would be best if it was "put on" and she hasn't done anything to herself.

And teens don't always know there is life on the other side of a problem and a problem is not the end of the world. A breakup, flunking a class, and so on. So it is worrisome this case.

But clearly the mom didn't monitor if her phone was charged, her walks, her going out to the car, etc. No parent of course can be up 24/7.

It's just not adding up.

Best case scenario would be if she wanted to leave and she is all right holed up in a hotel or something. Imo.

I don't really understand why she is going on walks on her own in the dark along a highway in the early morning. It seems it was a regular thing. Especially when she is suicidal?

Has the ex been contacted? That would be my first stop as a parent. She left her phone. Did she have a second phone?

Also, still calling her a teen at age 19. I was married with a 9 month old baby at that age.

So why is mom still checking on her when she goes on walks and is still sleeping with her. Where is her father? Why did she break up with the boyfriend. Has he been contacted by LE or the family?

Good points.

I was married too at 19 and with a baby. The 19 year old is not a baby.

I imagine they've explored things with the ex. I've heard it was a mutual break up but I've heard different things on how recent it was. One news station acts like it was recent but I've also heard it was months ago.

I will say most we've seen leave that did it on their own are being very controlled yet by their parents even though they are adult age. We've seen several over the years. And this is sounding as if there is some control here, sleeping with her, meeting her on walks, etc.

One can only hope it's the case as then she'd be alive. IF a problem child wasting resources and attention.
