Have you seen this child? Non-verbal boy missing from New Orleans home, police say

A 12-year-old boy with a neurodevelopmental disorder has been missing from his home on Beaucaire Street since Thursday morning, and New Orleans and state police are asking for the public's help to find him.

Bryan Vasquez was reported missing at 10 a.m. Thursday and Louisiana State Police received a request to issue a level II endangered child/missing child advisory early Friday morning just before 1:40 a.m.

During a Friday press conference in the New Orleans East neighborhood of Village de l'Est, officials from several law enforcement agencies said Vasquez was last seen at around 6:33 a.m. Thursday. He was nude, walking around the neighborhood, and appeared to be in distress.

Vasquez is non-verbal and autistic, and does not understand English or Spanish. He also takes medication, officers said.

“He’s probably hungry and needs medical attention,” NOPD Major Lejon Roberts said.

On Friday, New Orleans police asked residents in the area between Chef Menteur Highway, Dwyer Road, Michoud Boulevard and Interstate 510 to check their backyards and under any raised homes or buildings in case Vasquez is located out of sight. Officers also asked residents to check any surveillance cameras they have on their houses.

“He could be scared. He could be hiding,” Roberts said.

The area also has several low-lying canals, officers said. Boats were on the scene because the bodies of water have marshes.

Vasquez is Hispanic with brown eyes and black hair, state police said. He is 5 feet, 1 inches tall and weighs between 86-100 pounds. He was last seen wearing an adult diaper and is believed to have been walking in an unknown direction.

Bryan attends ReNEW School. It looks like they started on Monday, August 11. I wonder if he had been at school that week.

ReNEW Schools' issued a statement regarding Bryan Vasquez:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the disappearance of Bryan Vasquez yesterday. Our hearts are with Bryan’s family and loved ones during this extremely difficult time. The entire ReNEW family is committed to supporting efforts to locate him and we join the community in praying for his safe return.

While Bryan is a student at ReNEW Laurel, the circumstances of his disappearance are not connected to the school.

We are in close communication with law enforcement and will support them in any way we can as they continue the search for Bryan. We encourage anyone with information that could assist in locating Bryan to contact the New Orleans Police Department at (504) 658-6070 or dial 911.

Our entire ReNEW family stands united in hope, support, and determination to see Bryan home safe."

There’s so much water in the Michoud area of New Orleans. It’s usually the first thing I think of when somebody is missing in Sourh Louisiana. I hope this child wasn’t drawn to the water like so many kids.

Hilda Vasquez pleads with community to help find missing son

Hilda Vasquez, 34, pleaded with the community Sunday morning to help find her missing son, 12-year-old Bryan Vasquez.

Bryan Vasquez was last seen around 6:33 a.m. Thursday in the Village de l’Est neighborhood. He is nonverbal and requires medication, his mother said through translator Christiane Rosales-Farjardo, community activist with El Pueblo NoLa.

Search for missing 12-year-old Bryan Vasquez enters third day in New Orleans

The New Orleans Police Department has shifted the search for 12-year-old Bryan Vasquez to its Special Victims Division as the search enters its third day.

The New Orleans Police Department announced that specialized NOPD Detective Mario Bravo, who the department said is a certified interpreter with experience in recovering missing and exploited children, has been assigned as the lead investigator in the search.

“Our priority is bringing Bryan home safely,” said NOPD Superintendent Anne E. Kirkpatrick. “We are using every available resource and working hand-in-hand with our community, federal, and state partners to make that happen. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any possible sightings immediately.”

The NOPD said while the number of active field resources has been reduced, officers will continue to canvas neighborhoods and follow up on leads.

Authorities stressed the importance of public assistance. Residents are urged to check exterior home cameras, search sheds and outdoor areas, and immediately report any possible sightings.

Well it is both good and bad he knows how to swim I'd say. Good in that maybe he could save himself, bad in that he would have no fear of water and may head for it and end up somewhere swimming doesn't save him or he has to do it too long, etc. He is not clothed so would not have that weight which is good. My hope is he is hiding anda holed up but that won't get him his meds or food. My guess is mom leans towards someone having him as that might mean he is fed, etc. at least. Not sure why else she would think that.

The police waiting 10 hours to respond is concerning, if that’s the case.

Bryan’s mother, speaking through a translator, also made an emotional plea: “What I want to say right now is that, I just want to tell anybody, that if you have my child, to just please feed him. Give him a lot of food, take good care of him. But most important of all, return him to me.”
She recounted delays in police response: “Since he disappeared, as y’all know I wasn’t aware until 10 a.m. in the morning. Since 10 in the morning, I started calling the police… they showed up at my house until 8 p.m.”

She said Detective Bravo has remained in contact daily. “With the help of all our community members, I’m very grateful for the work they’re doing. I still have hope that my son is with someone, maybe alive, and I just want them to return my child.”

“Please just return my baby. My baby don’t talk. If somebody has my child against their will, don’t worry about it, my baby can’t talk. He can’t identify you, he will never say who you are. Just return my baby,” she added.

Authorities describe Bryan as non-verbal but able to hear and respond. His mother says he communicates by banging on objects or will respond by walking towards you or giving hugs.

Why???!! 10 hours of anguish to this mom. A missing child in his condition shouldn't have to wait 10 minutes for a response.

On Tuesday, excavators from the Sewerage & Water Board to clear the marsh plants, while search teams looked through nearby canals.

The governor’s office said if the boy is not located, the canals may be drained to aid the search. Officials also confirmed that the Cajun Navy is joining the effort, bringing in thermal drones to cover areas that are difficult to access.

There are photos in the linked article that show the type of terrain they are dealing with. I also linked the map of the area he was last seen. It appears to be right next to the swampy area.

Doorbell camera footage from a neighbor's home shows Bryan Vasquez walking alone down the street at about 5:20 a.m. Another video shows him walking to the door of a residence, not his own, before continuing on.

He was last seen on a home surveillance video at about 6:40 a.m. in the 13000 block of Sevres Street, according to Rosales-Fajardo. That's also where authorities found the boy's discarded diaper, she said.

The department used the crane to clear the thick mat of aquatic plants that stretched across the top of the canal.
"As they are pulling it out of the water, they go through [the plants] and check them," said Badon, who said he plans to inquire about draining the canal on Tuesday.

Holding out hope

The Vasquez family is holding out hope that Bryan Vasquez is alive. Hilda Vasquez has three other children, ages 11, 7 and 4 weeks old, according to Rosales-Fajardo.

She also says she wasn't aware he was missing till 10 a.m. so thats 5 hours plus 10 hours waiting for LE response is 15 hours altogether. He could have got a long way in that time but i would have thought that people would start reporting seeing him once it was daylight.
