NJ Transit police seeks help in identifying woman killed by train last year in Brielle

NJ TransitA composite sketch released by New Jersey Transit Police of a woman who was killed after being struck by a NJ Transit train last year.

BRIELLE -- NJ Transit Police have released a sketch of a woman who was fatally struck by a North Jersey Coast Line train in June 2008 and are seeking help in identifying the woman.

The woman had a light complexion, neck-length brown hair and blue/grey eyes. She appeared to be in her 20s to early 30s, weighed about 120 pounds and was about 5-feet-4-inches tall.

On June 15, 2008, train No. 4785 on the North Jersey Coast Line hit the unidentified woman at 1:38 a.m. in Brielle, between Manasquan and Point Pleasant stations, according to a statement by NJ Transit.

The engineer saw the woman, who was wearing a white t-shirt with a red long-sleeved sweatshirt underneath, white Adidas sneakers with black stripes, and blue rosary beads. She was also wearing a wooden religious bracelet and carrying a large brown tote bag with the words "New York" on it.

As the train approached, the engineer sounded the horn and activated the train's emergency brakes, but the train couldn't stop in time.

Anyone with information is asked to call (888) TIPS-NJT or (973) 378-6565 and refer to case # 2008-12490.

This sounds like the woman could have been suicidal or under the influence. People don't usually walk on railroad tracks at 1:38 AM.

I do think Brielle Jane was probably a visitor to the area because of the maps and the tote bag with "New York" on it. Where was Brielle Jane's purse with her money and ID? Why did she have winter clothing in the tote bag when the New Jersey weather in June is warm? She had two sweatshirts and one had a winter scene. She was at the New Jersey beach in June. Where were her shorts and swimsuit? She had a sun hat, but there was no makeup, combs, or personal articles except for the toothbrush. If she had arrived in New Jersey during the winter months, where was her coat?

The engineer on the NJ Transit train saw Brielle Jane and made an unsuccessful effort to stop the train. I am starting to wonder if Jane was running from something and naively thought the train would stop for her. It certainly doesn't sound like she had all of her possessions with her. Something isn't right in this bigger picture. If Brielle Jane was from Poland, she probably wasn't in New Jersey alone. Other people probably knew she was here. There are many Polish communities in central and northern New Jersey.

NJ Transit train kills woman who wandered onto tracks

Star-Ledger Continuous News Desk

A New Jersey Transit train struck and killed a woman who had wondered onto the tracks in Monmouth County early this morning, said Joe Dee, an NJ Transit spokesman.

Train No. 4785 on the North Jersey Coast Line hit the woman -- who has not been identified -- at 1:40 a.m. in Brielle borough, between Manasquan and Point Pleasant stations, Dee said.

The engineer spotted the woman as the train approached, sounding the horn and activating the train's emergency brakes, but couldn't stop in time. The victim wasn't near a station or grade crossing, Dee said.

Heading from Long Branch to Bayhead, the train had 20 passengers on board at the time. None were hurt, Dee said. Passengers were transferred to buses to complete their journeys, he said.

Regular service along the line resumed later in the morning.

Hello Crimewatchers community! I am Sonnyphono, part of the team who solved the Tod Motor Doe case last year. We noticed that some of our TMD work made it onto your forums and so we wanted to share our current work on the Brielle Jane Doe case. u/MementoMori29 is currently writing a series of posts on what we have uncovered and if it's ok with the mods I would like to share that work here as well.

Resurrecting this Case with New Information -- Brielle Jane Doe (self.BrielleJane)
submitted 10/05/23 days ago by MementoMori29

Hey all:
This summer marked 15 years since Brielle Jane Doe ("BJD") was found deceased on the outskirts of a quiet New Jersey beach town. Her body strewn across train tracks in the falling rain.
A decade and a half has passed with little additional information on the case outside of a host of rule-outs.
For the better part of a year, u/sonnyphono, u/UnderoverThrowaway, and myself have mused about this case. As paradoxical as it sounds, there is all at once, lots of tantalizing tidbits and no real actionable information regarding the final days and identity of BJD. Late last year, Sonny and I were able to positively confirm the identity of Tod Motor Doe (more information on that incoming) and we started to get serious about Doe cases. Brielle Jane Doe is one of those cases.
In our spare time, the three of us have chased down publicly available leads, spoken to law enforcement, filed records request with some success and worked on the transferring of BJD's DNA to a reputable forensic genealogy company.
I am planning on using this forum to create a number of posts that will detail our work and specifically release new information and theories about her death and possible identity.
As of right now, BJD exists in a gray zone of being unidentified despite her DNA being both on file with the coroner's office and passing through the hands of two forensic genealogy organizations. This is becoming an increasingly rare instance in the world of John and Jane Does. And all three of us think that perhaps a more traditional investigatory method, along with more exposure and renewed pressure on law enforcement to release additional investigatory information may go a long way.
As we don't believe BJD's death was a suicide or an accident (to be discussed later), we feel strongly that somewhere out there today, right now, knows her true identity.
As we did in our Tod Motor Doe investigation, we will protect names and identities to prevent harassment or unwanted attention of individuals not suspected of involvement in this case. We hope that this sub picks up steam and is a place for discussion. If you are interested, please provide a link to this sub on forums or cross-post, just please let us know where you end up spreading it.
I'll post more in the coming days. Thanks for reading.
