Man's body identified 38 years after being found in western North Dakota

A man whose body was found floating down the Missouri River 38 years ago and was buried without anyone knowing who he was has been identified.

The Williams County Sheriff's Department, who disinterred the young man's body from Riverview Cemetery on Monday, Aug. 10, said the body is that of Phillip Peterson.

The department didn't give any other information about Peterson.

Media coverage of the removal of his body from an unmarked grave led to a family member recognizing tattoos after seeing them on a news program.

The family member then contacted the sheriff's office, which said Thursday, Aug. 13, that the name and new technologies in digital forensics led to the positive identification.

Lake Stickney John Doe from 1994 has been identified as Rodney Peter Johnson.

Snohomish County Sheriff's and Medical Examiner's Office Partner with Othram to Identify Lake Stickney John Doe

The search for answers began in 1994 when a fisherman discovered a body in the lake. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's office determined the deceased to be between 25 and 35 years old and the victim of a violent homicide. There were multiple facial reconstructions for the victim, in part because ethnicity assessment was inconclusive. Rodney Johnson, who was reported missing in 1996, had last been seen in 1987, when he was only 25 years old. It’s likely that the Lake Stickney John Doe had been in the lake for as many as seven years before being discovered.

Dade County Jane Doe from 1981 has been identified as Patricia Parker.

"The Hamilton County D.A.'s Cold Case Unit has identified the woman as Patricia Parker, who was 30 years old when she died.
Officials say Parker has family members still in Chattanooga, including a son, who was notified what happened to his mother Friday morning.
They said family members have chosen not to appear or speak publicly yet, as they are still processing this incredible news.

The Cold Case Unit says there will be no local prosecutions of this murder case."

"According to GBI Assistant Special Agent Joe Montgomery, Parker was 30 years old when she was killed and would be 69 if she was still alive today.
Montgomery said Parker has a son who lives in Chattanooga, whose DNA helped confirm her identity."

"The GBI says a family member came forward after seeing the forensic reconstruction of the remains found off I-24 in Dade County in 1981.
The GBI says Samuel Little, an infamous serial killer serving a life sentence in prison, confessed to killing the woman."

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Deputies have identified a homicide victim found in Escambia County in January 1985.

The Sheriff's Office announced they identified William Thompson, 85, whose body was found in the area of west Klondike Rd. and Wild Lake Blvd. on January 23, 1985. They say he was murdered.

"The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office released details about the victim’s location and other identifying factors to the public. Years passed, but no tips on the case," a release states.

Deputies say that in 2018, a person who was searching for their missing family member read the story on the Sheriff's Office website and contacted investigators.

"The thing that stuck out to the person the most was the victims belt buckle with the hand-engraved initials 'W.T.'" the release states. "The person felt this could have been their missing uncle, whose last known location was in Escambia County near the same time John Doe’s body was discovered."

Investigators contacted the Medical Examiner’s office and used a sample of the tipster’s DNA with DNA from John Doe. Samples were sent to the University of North Texas to be analyzed. The results of the test revealed the body as Thompson.

Deputies say the last time Thompson made contact with his family was on September 23, 1983, when he called his mother from an unknown location on Pensacola Beach.

"A missing person’s report was never filed with the ECSO," the release states. "His case is being actively worked as a homicide."

“This is another example of the never-ending quest for justice. While we haven’t yet solved the homicide. It is a step forward and can give the family some closure until the case is solved," Chief Deputy Chip Simmons

COLD CASE
Dolores Wulff

After 41 year cold case mystery, DNA ties torso to woman whose husband was chief suspect in her disappearance

Dolores Wulff disappeared in 1979 leaving behind 4 children

After finding a torso that washed ashore in 1979 California police now know it belongs to a missing woman whose husband faced trial for her murder until the case was dismissed for lack of evidence.

The Benicia Police Department said Thursday it reopened the case in July and was able to connect the remains to Dolores Wulff through DNA obtained from one of her children.

Wulff was a 45-year-old secretary and living in Woodland when she vanished in the middle of the night in July 1979. The torso turned up that September but was never identified.

Yolo County Sheriff Tom Lopez said.the case has haunted his office for decades.

Days after the disappearance Wulff’s husband, Carl Wulff Sr., a prominent insurance executive and board member of the Woodland Chamber of Commerce, became the prime suspect. Eventually he was indicted for murder in 1985. Charges were dismissed after his prominent San Francisco defense attorney produced two witnesses who said they had seen Dolores Wulff after her disappearance, claims that could not be verified, according to the paper.

Carl Wulff died in 2005.

Not sure if I am supposed to reply here but I just want to say clearly there is more going on here. Who displays a human skull instead of calling LE?? That is sick.

What kind of person finds a skull and doesn't report It? But put it on their mantle and puts sunglasses on It?. It belongs to a person. What a sicko. They should be charged with tampering as far as I am concerned.

I wonder why he wasn't reported missing for so long.

I think there is a discrepancy here. Last heard from in 1983 when he called his Mother. Found in 1985. They list his age as 85?.

Pecos Jane Doe from 1966 has been identified as Jolaine Hemmy.

Othram, Pecos PD and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Team to Identify Pecos Jane Doe

After 55 years, Pecos Jane Doe is Identified!

"In 1966, a young woman drowned in the Ropers Motel pool in Pecos, Texas and for more than 50 years her true identity was unknown. The young woman, known until recently as Pecos Jane Doe, checked into the Ropers Motel with an unknown male companion, using the names, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Battoun. Hours later, a hotel employee found the woman’s body in the hotel pool. As the woman was being taken away in an ambulance, her companion checked out of the hotel and was never seen again.

More than 50 years later, Pecos Police Department Chief Lisa Tarango, continued the search for Pecos Jane Doe’s true identity. The victim is buried with a gravestone marked, "Unknown Girl Drowned July 5, 1966" and agency officials have continued to visit her grave and bring flowers.

Othram reached out to the Pecos Police Department in early 2020 to help identify the woman using advanced DNA testing. The laboratory work was funded mostly by Pecos Police Department, with a supplementary crowdfund established through DNASolves. Skeletal remains were brought to Othram in August 2020 and work on the case began, first to develop a DNA extract from the bone, and then to construct a DNA profile using Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing®."

"Jolaine was 17 years old in 1966, working at a drive-in diner in Kansas City, Kansas. She abruptly vanished one day and didn't pick up her last paycheck. Her family reported her missing and worked hard to find out where she had gone and despite tremendous efforts by family and law enforcement, they were unable to find her. At least one family member remembers a man that took particular interest in Jolaine around the time of her disappearance, but little is known about him. Pecos Police Department is continuing to investigate."

Here's a snip from a different article.

The victim, who would have been 85 if he were still alive, was identified after someone looking for their missing uncle in 2018 read a story on the police website.

and one more

Now, authorities have confirmed the man was William Ernest Thompson, 49. Before his body was found, he last spoke to his family Sept. 23, 1983.
