ANNA KEPNER: Teen found dead on Carnival cruise ship *ARREST!* (15 Viewers)

Anna Kepner's mom: 'I was misinformed' about stepbrother murder charges

The stepbrother of Anna Kepner, the Florida teen killed aboard a Carnival, was not charged with murder, according to the girl’s mother.

Last week, the 16-year-old stepbrother appeared before a federal judge in a Miami courtroom, but all documents were sealed. Kepner’s mom, Heather Wright, originally made a social media post that said she was informed the stepbrother would be charged with murder.

Wright made a new post Feb. 9 where she said she was provided “apparently misinformed.”

“They didn ‘t charge… with F—king anything when he went to federal court so I’m not sure what that’s all about,” Wright said in her video. “I also heard he’s being tried as a juvenile and not an adult, which is f—ked up. That boy knew what he was doing when he did it. No if, ands, buts about it. Everybody pray for me. Pray for justice for my daughter. Thank you for all the love and support.”
I'm not sure she knows. I sure hope that's not the case, the no murder charge. Docs are sealed as stated.

What I do know is this isn't moving in a way it should be and of course family members that care about Anna would be very upset at this point and with not knowing what the heck. It also could be that local court will charge him.

I guess I'm not thinking I'm putting total confidence in what she's saying or knows.

However, it is time something be done here.

I'm hoping our new member can find a federal indictment, however, since he is a juvenile and it may possibly go to the local court, maybe there won't be one? Not sure. No idea.

I am vaguely familiar with it. I had been wondering why there was no arrest. The whole cruise ship thing brings in the jurisdiction question which is really more why I was interested in the case. If I get time I might try to find an indictment but it wont be today I'm afraid.
You and me both! It's crazy that there hasn't been an arrest in this case. If it's due to jurisdiction, then I'm wondering how safe these cruise lines really are? They say that a jurisdiction issue resulted in the poor investigation into Amy Bradley's disappearance too!

This has been an issue for a long time. there have been some changes in the law but I don't know exactly what those are. Since all involved are US citizens it very much simplifiles things. I think both the US and Florida have jurisdiction.

That's kind of what it sounded like throughout to me. All are US citizens that seem to be involved.

And that who takes the case has to be decided. That's what I'm pretty sure his mom said in court.

I sure hope you'll stick around here. We (not speaking for anyone else) are not JT but there are moments of disagreement. NOTHING like there though.

This case caught me right off for some reason. Well once the public heard of it.

It really seems too a slam dunk with no question of who did it at least... Of course I think he was lawyered up fast with mom etc. helping on that end of things.

It just is taking forever and even now, it says charges were filed but then her bio mom says not...

I sure intend to stick around. I enjoy active discussion even disagreement. Just not the constant arguing.

These cruise ship jurisdictions have been a mess. I honestly don't know how the laws have changed. i want to see the indictment so i can sort of back track from there to see. But you can see how since this occurs at sea, there are days go by before any law enforcement can take control of the crime scene. So lots of contamination that a defense can latch onto. I just hope this is prosecuted well and justice can be achieved.

Well, they aren’t rushing into anything so hopefully that’s a good sign.

Be interesting if and when we get more info or you see the indictment, what you have to say on it.

I really think I recall you, although it's been some years since I was on WS. Is that possible? I recall a few attys,, some I didn't like, one in particular for sure, you I believe I did. Did have a different name there.

The families do seem a mess and it was confusing, still is with some out there, as to who is who as to steps, bio, etc. Amazing Anna was doing as well as she was, it's a total shame.

I'm ready to see him lose his freedom.

I just got done with an entire morning of the Murdaugh appeal. Did you follow that case at all?

I was doing a few things here and there while it was on but did mostly watch the whole long thing.

I used the same name over there. I hope I wasn't one of the annoying ones. LOL. I just try to help explain some of the legal process as things go on. Otherwise, i know my opinion isn't worth any more or less than anyone else's.

I had the same problem with that family,, trying to understand who belonged to who etc. I still not sure I have it all right.

I have only followed Murdaugh vaguely. I know he was going to the NC Supreme ct today. Anything interesting? I don't know what he is appealing specifically.

No, I'm almost positive I liked you. Not annoying at all. There was one I remember though that was very annoying. Was not you as I recall her name for some reason, and state she was supposedly from.

I don't actually know the specific issues but first argument was about the jury and the clerk who supposedly the D said influenced them, then there was a trial on that or hearing with a judge, now it is appealed as she didn't find it was reason for a new trial. I probably don't have this exact, you'd understand better. Second thing they were arguing if I recall was all the 404B evidence that came in and then it got into why it needed to, the facts of the case and more. I think there were 3 issues, at least that's what someone told me. Iistened to almost all of it but wasn't always paying total attention. No decision of course as there usually isn't at the time of hearing is there?

Yeah the families in Kepner. Her dad was married 3 times. Stepmom twice. That we know of. Then her mom was not present in her life in the later years or for many. There are two 9 year old which makes it more confusing, one from each, dad and stepmom, and then yeah, it goes on from there, and the various spouses and so on. Plus grandma and grandpa were on the cruise.

To your knowledge, does it always take this long to even charge for a federal case? That appears to be pretty slam dunk/they have him dead to rights it seems. The stepbrother. Is it longer because he is a juvenile? I heard, not sure if true, that the feds don't really deal with juveniles or very often or something like that?

Sharing the room were her, her brother and her stepbrother (alleged perp). Key entries tell a lot. And so on. Won't go on as you may know a lot of this.

It can take a little longer in the federal system. they have to use a grand jury. And this is a little different than what they normally deal with and probably were in discussions with the state prosecutors over who was going to do what. Hopefully it moves along much quicker now.

I hope so. There's a few things I don't like with the fed system. The secrecy for one but I really also dislike that they record nothing. Even if they don't livestream, I think there should be a recording. Jmo of course.

However I do like that crimes can be at times prosecuted federally and that the DP is in force right now in the fed system. Again jmo, not all may agree.

I can tell you I'm glad to have anyone with your profession and experience here. I've often wished for such. I watch more than a few attys on YT to get answers a lot of times.

All cases hit but this one hit me for a few reasons. She just was doing so well in school and had such a bright future is the main one. I think the other big one is that it was only due to this marriage of her dad she had to deal with this boy. WHY they put them in a room together, I'll never understand EVEN if things were fine. They aren't related and it is a teen boy and girl, just a big mistake imo.

Glad to have you here! We are a much slower pace. Kinda like drinking your coffee and reading the newspaper in the morning.

In an emergency filing, dated Feb. 20, attorneys for Thomas Hudson, the stepbrother's father, wrote: "According to social media from the Kepner family, on February 3, 2026, the Petitioner/Father's son, TH, was charged by the United States Attorney in the Southern District of Florida for the [redacted] and homicide of Anna Kepner."

The filing is part of an ongoing custody dispute between Hudson and Shauntel Kepner, the parents of Anna Kepner's stepbrother.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida and the FBI have not commented on developments in the Kepner case.

However, CBS News has learned there is an ongoing case against the teen that is currently under seal and being overseen by Miami federal judge Beth Bloom.

The stepbrother, who CBS News is not naming because he is a minor, appeared in federal court in Miami on Feb. 6, for a hearing but because the case is under seal media was not allowed in the courtroom

"If it's a juvenile you won't know until he's charged as an adult," Dave Aronberg, a former Palm Beach state attorney, told CBS News.

A court document file in a separate case reveals that the stepbrother of Anna Kepner has been charged with her murder along with a second charge that was redacted from the released document.

According to WESH, the document was filed on Friday by the stepbrother’s biological father.

He's been charged and arrested but he's not in custody? What is going on here?

TWO charges? And why would the other be redacted? Apparently by the family court judge? I'd assume?

Is it too personal?? That makes no sense at all because no criminal charges are personal or worse than murder...??

Something the father doesn't want known? I don't get it.

Kidnapping might be possible, he did restrain her, keep her from leaving the room, hold her by her neck?

Perhaps the after the fact act of hiding her body? Obstructing justice?

All those might apply but WHY redact such?? Makes no sense to me at all.

Makes no sense either! They wait forever to charge him, we had no way of even really knowing for sure at first when they did, then they let a charged murderer FREE??!! Was there a high bond and someone paid it??

Hopefully there will also be some charges on some of the "adults". Their actions, or lack thereof, definitely contributed to this happening. I blame the step brother for the actual murder, but the adults basically are responsible for the environment that helped it happen.

A new court filing offers new insight into where a teenage murder suspect is living.

The 16-year-old, identified as T.H. in court documents, was allegedly charged in Kepner’s homicide as a juvenile in federal court. Despite the charges, T.H. is not in police custody and has been staying in the care of a relative.

A new court document filed in T.H.’s parents’ divorce case revealed that he is staying with a maternal uncle. T.H.’s father, Thomas Hudson, filed the document asking the court to change the current child support arrangement with T.H.’s mother, Shauntel Kepner, as a result of the current custody arrangement.

Hudson says that Kepner “expelled” T.H. from her home after he was “potentially involved in serious felony offenses.” He references Shauntel Kepner’s statement at a previous custody hearing that T.H. “is not welcome in her home.” As a result, Hudson asked that he not be required to continue paying $640.19 monthly, since the uncle named in the documents is financially responsible for T.H. while caring for the teen.

Stepbrother accused in Anna Kepner cruise death at center of custody dispute

Last month, an emergency motion filed by the stepbrother's biological father said the teen is facing two charges.

In a new filing from the divorce case, an uncle said he has been watching over the teen since he returned from the cruise.

He said the teen is with him full-time in Hernando County and that the teen's mother has only paid him $200 for care.

The uncle is asking the court for more financial support while caring for the teen.https://www.wesh.com/article/timeline-anna-kepners-cruise-ship-death/69547484
