Justice for Dylan Redwine: seven years and waiting

Dylan Redwine disappeared seven years ago Tuesday in La Plata County, an event that prompted a yearslong investigation that led to the arrest of the boy’s father on suspicion of murder.

Dylan’s disappearance Nov. 19, 2012, and subsequent homicide investigation sparked national attention. The boy, 13, was last seen with his father, Mark Redwine, on surveillance footage at the Durango-La Plata County Airport and at Walmart in Durango.

“It’s kind of surreal,” said Elaine Hatfield-Hall, Dylan’s mother, in an interview Tuesday with The Durango Herald. “Sometimes, it doesn’t feel like it happened.”

Dylan’s last known whereabouts were at his father’s home, 2343 County Road 500, just north of Vallecito Reservoir. His last phone activity or communication was at 9:37 p.m. Nov. 18, 2012, when he sent text messages to a friend about plans to meet up.

Dylan’s friend sent a text at 6:46 the next morning asking, “where are you,” and received no response.

Investigators found the boy’s partial remains in June 2013 about 8 miles up Middle Mountain Road. Hikers found the boy’s skull in November 2015 about 1½ miles up Middle Mountain Road from where the rest of his remains were found.

Law enforcement arrested Mark Redwine, now 58, in July 2017 in Washington state and accused him of second-degree murder and child abuse. He has been incarcerated ever since at the La Plata County Jail.

Redwine’s trial date has been postponed at least three times in the past year. He is currently scheduled for a four-week trial in April 2020.

I’m not understanding the point of Kathi Barry’s testimony. It just seems to me like a couple of people who are upset about what’s going on but didn’t even know the family before Dylan’s murder are going over and screaming at Mark on the day that Dylan’s remains were identified. I mean, it’s kind of obvious how things would turn out whether Mark was guilty or not. Am I missing something? Tell me I’m missing something.

Was this blood never tested further? Was it not able to be tested further?

In total there were six samples collected at Mark Redwine's home that had positive reactions with luminol and a second chemical, phenolphthalein, which indicates the substance is blood.

That reaction does not confirm that the substance is human blood, however, and the results of further testing to determine if the samples were human blood were not revealed in court Thursday.

Dylan Redwine’s older brother confronted his father with lewd photos of him three months before the teen disappeared, his brother testified Thursday.

Under cross-examination by the defense, Cory Redwine said he sent the images — which showed his father, Mark Redwine, eating feces from a diaper — to his father via text message in August 2012, more than a year after the siblings had discovered them on their father's laptop.

Cory Redwine has for years accused his father of playing a role in Dylan's disappearance. At first, he denied sending the lewd photos to Mark Redwine when questioned about them in court. He revised his account after being confronted on the stand with an FBI report in which he told an agent he sent them, saying it refreshed his memory.

Yeah.... What a strange testimony. What a strange woman.

Kathi Barry testified that she and another woman drove to Redwine’s house to confront him about a text he’d sent to his ex-wife and found him standing at the door. From inside their vehicle on the road, the women and Redwine began shouting and cursing at each other.

The argument escalated, and then Barry called Redwine an “(expletive)-eating (expletive),” at which point Redwine moved toward the women, picked up a log and lifted it as though he was going to strike the women’s vehicle, she testified.

“I said, ‘Eat more (expletive)’ and then hit the gas and we took off,” she testified.

On cross-examination, Moran suggested that the women picked a fight with a grieving father who had only hours earlier lost all hope of seeing his son alive again. Redwine only picked up the log to drive the women off after yelling at them failed to get rid of them, Moran said.

Barry agreed on cross-examination that Redwine could have hit them or the car with the log, but chose not to.

Currently watching Kathi Barry, Elaine’s attorney friend, on the stand. She cries when asked if she gave advice as to whether Dylan had to go to see his father or not. Of course she said he did or Elaine would be in contempt of court, because that’s the truth. She had no idea what was going to happen. I just feel so terrible for her because she seems to feel terrible About giving her advice. She doesn’t need to feel that way, but I think all of us would.
The pain that Mark Redwine has inflicted is more widespread than just Dylan, Elaine and Cory. Amber Harrison is the attorney who told Elaine she had to send Dylan to see Mark or face contempt of court charges. You're right, she had no way of knowing what was going to happen but will live forever thinking about it.

Hopefuly there will be a guilty verdict and Amber will at least know that justice has prevailed. Hopefully that will ease her pain to some degree.

The States motive for Mark Redwine killing Dylan is that Dylan confronted him about the diaper photos and Mark in a fit of anger killed him.

The woman who confronted Mark testified that he was laughing at them and calling them names at first. When they called him an excrement eater he picked up a log and advanced on them in an agressive and violent manner. This suggests that particular subject could trigger violent aggression in Mark.

Thank you for unraveling my mess about her testimony. I really liked her. I wanted to reach out and tell her she did nothing wrong.

OK I can see that now. I think the defense bringing up the timing was good on their part. I don’t like that they do anything right because I believe Mark should get the death penalty, but it was a very stressful day Since it was the day that Dylan’s remains were identified.

Regardless of the timing, I thought it was strange that he would come out there in his underwear and confront them on that day, too. Why not just stay in the house and let them go by? Or call the police and say please keep an eye on my house because strange women keep driving by. In reality, we know why he didn’t call the police.

Kathi Barry met a woman named Denise during the search for Dylan. She's the one who drove Denise to MW's house
where Denise had a cussing match with him. MW told (as testified yesterday) Denise he hoped she died of the cancer she
was fighting and that is when Kathi joined in the argument. I believe Kathi met Elaine through Denise who later died
after losing her battle with cancer.
Elaine's attorney is Amber Harrison. She was Elaine's attorney in the divorce and later a Judge before retiring and moving
to another state.
Amber's name was not listed as one of the witnesses on the stream on YT but the others were. Not sure why, maybe just
over looked?
The audio is pretty bad and the screen is obscured by the witness stand, but I'm happy it's being streamed so I won't complain
about it.
I wouldn't mind if the defense atty's microphone failed now and then. LOL!

My best guess is her testimony was to show MW's temper, that's what I got out of it. But yes, IMHO I didn't see she added much to the trial.
I read yesterday that Colorado no longer has the DP, it was repealed in 2020.

That is a very good point about a trigger

I'm watching the videos here and there, so my comments may be scattered until I get caught up. Thanks for clarifying things!

Who is MW?

DNA experts take stand in Mark Redwine trial

Analyses of DNA evidence are focusing on samples not only from Dylan and Mark Redwine, but also Dylan’s older brother, Cory; his mother, Elaine Hall; and Mark Redwine’s half-brother, David Stone.

A new software program, STRmix, was adopted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in 2018, and evidence in Dylan’s death was retested using the software. It was the first evidence from a criminal case in Colorado tested using STRmix, said Sarah Miller, who until recently was program manager of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Lab.

Miller now works for a private DNA laboratory in Florida.

Miller testified that DNA collected on a coffee table in Mark Redwine’s Vallecito home had overwhelming statistical probability of coming from two individuals – Dylan and Mark Redwine.

But DNA tests have their limits, Miller told defense lawyer Justin Bogan during cross-examination.

“STRmix can’t tell you when the DNA was deposited, and it can’t tell you how it was contributed, whether it was blood, saliva, semen or skin,” Miller testified.

The October 2013 collection of items for DNA testing also included dozens of household items, such as fireplace tools, a tire iron, a duffel bag, speakers, a kitchen table rug and the wooden front door threshold.

The tests all came back negative except for a partial DNA profile of Dylan on a pair of Mark Redwine’s underwear, Strub said.

Strub said Dylan’s DNA could not be excluded from a number of positive tests in Mark Redwine’s living room, including a love seat cushion, a couch cushion, the floor in front of the love seat, the coffee table and the floor under a rug beneath the coffee table.

When prosecutor Michael Dougherty asked Strub if the inability to exclude Dylan’s blood from multiple positive tests in the living room meant it was likely Dylan bled in the living room in multiple places, she offered a simple answer: “That is correct.”

Last night I watched a clip of two of Dylan’s friends who were 12 and 13 at the time he went missing. I can’t imagine trying to recollect that as a child, but I’ll bet it burns in their minds.

I feel that the State is spending way too much time on the blood/DNA evidence. They are using one CSI and three DNA analysts who are going over the same things multiple times.

It boils down to them only finding one blood stain that can be said came from Dylan. The rest of the samples collected can be from Mark, Dylan, or Cory. Or a combination of those individuals. I'm not very impressed with the blood evidence .

One of those samples was highly likely to belong to Dylan Redwine, and others had a profile that could match him, his father or his brother. Since they are related, Strub said the three Redwines had similar DNA profiles.

That makes me nervous since I know you were zeroed in on watching that testimony.

You shouldn't be nervous. There's still more to come. One thing that I think will have a major impact on the jury is the statement that Mark made about blunt force trauma to Dylan's head and that his skull would have to be found to shown that was the cause of death.

When Dylan's skull was found two years later sign's of blunt force trauma were found. Also there will be testimony that animals would not have moved the skull to that location. There's only one way Mark would know about the blunt force trauma and he had the means and opportunity to move Dylan's skull in an attempt to hide that damning evidence.

I’m gonna go watch another video right now. Did Mark ever talk about any other possible cause of death before Dylan was found? That really is a damning statement. I didn’t remember him saying that at all.
