Justice for Dylan Redwine: seven years and waiting

Dylan Redwine disappeared seven years ago Tuesday in La Plata County, an event that prompted a yearslong investigation that led to the arrest of the boy’s father on suspicion of murder.

Dylan’s disappearance Nov. 19, 2012, and subsequent homicide investigation sparked national attention. The boy, 13, was last seen with his father, Mark Redwine, on surveillance footage at the Durango-La Plata County Airport and at Walmart in Durango.

“It’s kind of surreal,” said Elaine Hatfield-Hall, Dylan’s mother, in an interview Tuesday with The Durango Herald. “Sometimes, it doesn’t feel like it happened.”

Dylan’s last known whereabouts were at his father’s home, 2343 County Road 500, just north of Vallecito Reservoir. His last phone activity or communication was at 9:37 p.m. Nov. 18, 2012, when he sent text messages to a friend about plans to meet up.

Dylan’s friend sent a text at 6:46 the next morning asking, “where are you,” and received no response.

Investigators found the boy’s partial remains in June 2013 about 8 miles up Middle Mountain Road. Hikers found the boy’s skull in November 2015 about 1½ miles up Middle Mountain Road from where the rest of his remains were found.

Law enforcement arrested Mark Redwine, now 58, in July 2017 in Washington state and accused him of second-degree murder and child abuse. He has been incarcerated ever since at the La Plata County Jail.

Redwine’s trial date has been postponed at least three times in the past year. He is currently scheduled for a four-week trial in April 2020.

I’m gonna go watch another video right now. Did Mark ever talk about any other possible cause of death before Dylan was found? That really is a damning statement. I didn’t remember him saying that at all.
I don't think he did. I do know that he told his son Brandon Redwine about the blunt force trauma two years before Dylan's skull was found. He is on the States witness list.

Brandon told investigators that Mark "had mentioned blunt-force trauma several times and discussed how investigators would have to find the rest of the body, including the skull, before they could determine if this was the cause of death."

Here's a link that has all of the people's and defense exhibit's plus all of the pretrial motions, objections, etc. You can see all of the photos, including the disgusting ones, that have been displayed for the jury that you can't see on the YouTube videos because of the crummy camera. People who do not wish to view the gross MR photos please avoid People's exhibit numbers 17-18-19-20.

I’m just starting part two of Cory on the stand. I don’t know if I want to see the pictures! That is not my cup of tea.

I had the whole scenario of “the pictures” down incorrectly. I thought Cory showed him the pictures just before he left for the Thanksgiving visitation. I had no idea that Dylan had found those pictures himself During a prior visit.

My advice is to not view those pictures. You know what they are about. That should suffice. They are numbers 17-18-19-20 on the States exhibits if you want to avoid them. I edited my OP about the exhibits to warn people which ones have the gross MR photos in them.

Yes, Dylan found the photos on Mark's PC, told Cory about them and Cory then took photos of the computer screen with his phone to make copy's.

I apologize for not warning everyone which ones are the gross ones. Once you see them it's hard to get them out of your mind. I made some edits to warn people which ones they are in order to avoid them.

That's why I went to them. I knew what they were. 🤮 It's not your fault it's mine.

Cory said he didn’t send the pics to Mark, then under cross admitted to it. Is that correct?

The questions to him under cross almost made it sound like the defense is blaming Cory for stirring Mark up! Will it backfire?

Yes. The defense impeached him. I'm not sure why Cory said he didn't send those photos when obviously he did. It helped the defense because it shows he is biased and could cause the jury to question his testimony on other things.

In my opinion Cory was caught lying and that hurt the prosecution. However the damage was probably minimal because the jury probably see's Cory in a very sympathetic view and understands why he made that mistake.

I’ve been thinking about it and I think the prosecution did a really good job under the redirect. They got him to say that he still loves his dad and then Cory cried. I got to thinking that maybe he lied because he didn’t want the world to know the things he had said his dad about the pictures, Which was a pretty nasty discussion in itself.. If other jurors see it that way, that will really help the prosecution recover.

I agree that the prosecution needed to rehabilitate Cory after he was impeached. Having him say he still loves his father was part of that. The only problem I have with it is I don't believe Cory still loves Mark Redwine. He refuses to call him father or dad for a reason. He hates him for killing his brother Dylan.

After the jury hears more incriminating evidence I have a feeling that the issue with Cory lying about the photos will be a minor part in the decision they make.

First responder details Mark Redwine's demeanor after his son's disappearance

Upper Pine River Deputy Fire Chief Roy Vreeland wasn’t on-duty the afternoon of Nov. 19, 2012. When he received a pager message about a missing child, he said he nevertheless sprang into action and grabbed his to-go bag, pausing only to check the temperature before he walked out the door.

Vreeland said it was just above 40 degrees, and although the sun was shining, it would soon get dark, making the search for 13-year-old Dylan Redwine near his father Mark’s home in Vallecito all the more urgent.

Mark Redwine greeted first-responders at the door. Vreeland said he remembered Redwine looked “disheveled” and his demeanor was “laid-back, nonchalant.”

“Typically, more people show a lot of emotion when someone’s missing,” said Vreeland, who worked in search and rescue for multiple decades before recently retiring. “… I would say [Mark Redwine] was concerned, but he was not frantic at all.”

Elaine's testimony didn't surprise me. I felt sorry for her when she was trying to downplay her actions that were caused by her desperation to find Dylan. Who wouldn't look at MR? We all were!

I can see them setting up the DNA evidence in these earlier days of the trial, making sure the jury is aware of all the work done on MR's house prior to the fire so the date of the evidence is more clear.

‘I saw Mark Redwine’: Stepdad’s explosive testimony places alleged killer dad close to slain son’s remains

Two months before authorities found partial remains of Colorado boy Dylan Redwine, his father allegedly visited his gravesite, according to testimony Tuesday.

According to testimony by Dylan’s stepfather, Mark Hall, Mark Redwine was driving his white pickup truck down Middle Mountain Road in Vallecito on April 13, 2013. Hall testified that he pulled in over in the secluded area to use the restroom when he spotted the suspect.

“It appeared to me that he was trying to put a great deal of distance between him and I,” Hall said.

The State presented some compelling evidence today. First was Mark Redwine thru pictures of Dylan into a dumpster. LE recovered those photos. That shows a total lack of an emotional tie to his own son.

The States other highlight of the day was Dr Johnson's testimony about animal behavior. The odds that a bear or cougar killed Dylan are next to nothing. Detailed testimony about bear hibernation dates and behaviors make a bear attack nearly impossible. There have only been two fatal cougar attacks ever in Colorado which statistically makes it extremely unlikely as a cause of death.

The defense did score some points in the cross of Tonya Golbricht a LaPlata Co Sheriff's office investigator. Apparently there was a test done to seal up Mark Redwine's truck and check an air sample from it for human decomposition. The test didn't find any decomp scent.

Interesting! I haven’t had a chance to watch the trial this week. Still trying to play catch-up from not being able to do much last weekend.

Did they mention that there might not be a decomp scent because he wasn’t in the truck long enough?
