According to documents filed Monday in Cass County Circuit Court, Oklahoma-based DNA Solutions must be allowed to access skeletal remains for both Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions, whose remains were found in rural Cass County in 2017.

Documents also say DNA Solutions must be allowed to test hair recovered from a white SUV in 2013.

All testing must be done at the DNA Solutions lab in Oklahoma, according to the documents. The evidence must be returned to the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office and Belton Police Department by April 30.

Jury selection for the trial is set to begin on July 22. Jurors will be brought in from St. Charles County, which is just outside of St. Louis. Once the jury is set, the trial will begin the following Monday.

here is his reasoning for calling this entrapment. I hate to laugh, but, well, I am laughing and pretty pizzed that he thought that flirting was..., well, here's their explanation

"Yust’s defense attorney Molly Hastings pressed Farris on the statement, eventually telling the court Farris flirted with Yust enough to lead him to believe sex was possible."

Motion denied: Kylr Yust to stand trial for murder of Kara Kopetsky, Jessica Runions

The push by Kylr Yust’s attorneys to get two murder charges against him dropped failed Friday in a Cass County courtroom.

Yust’s attorneys argued police did not do enough to investigate other suspects in the disappearance of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions, but Judge William Collins swiftly denied the motion after hearing the motion.

Yust is charged with murdering both girls.

Journey for Justice: The Trial of Kylr Yust

On May 4, 2007, 17-year-old Kara Kopetsky walked out of Belton High School, never to be seen alive again.

The night of Sept. 8, 2016, 21-year-old Jessica Runions left a house party and disappeared. Only her car turned up - burnt and unrecognizable.

Kylr Yust stands accused of murdering both Kopetsky and Runions. The man had a troubled past and connections to both women.

The bodies of the two women were eventually found, but now the question stands: Did Yust do it?

It's a case that spans nearly a decade and includes all sorts of twists and turns.

41 Action News has created a database for the case that includes important names, dates, places and details for the public to stay up to date on the topic.

Remember this person as we head closer to trial:

Jessep Carter was the stepbrother of Kylr Yust and likely to be one of the key witnesses in the murder charges brought against Yust. However, Carter died in his cell at Jackson County Corrections in September 2018 at the age of 32. His death was deemed a suicide.
Carter was in custody on arson charges for a July 13, 2018, house fire. He was alsowith Yust the day that missing woman, Jessica Runions’ car was found burned - which Yust was later charged for. A Henry County deputy pulled Carter over with Yust in his vehicle that day. Carter was accused of fleeing that traffic stop.

Court documents for Yust’s murder charges claim that Carter saw Yust set Runions’ car on fire and that the step-brother drove Yust to a trailer in Edwards, Missouri, where he was later arrested. Carter reportedly called Belton, Missouri, police after dropping Yust off and told them about Yust’s actions and where he was located. He later told 41 Action News he was “not ok” with Yust’s actions.
Carter was also accused of attacking an ex-girlfriend in October 2016.

Jury selected in Kylr Yust murder trial; Opening statements expected Monday afternoon

A jury has been selected for Kylr Yust’s murder trial. It took three days to chose the 12 jurors, plus four alternates. There are 13 women and three men.

Jurors were selected from St. Charles, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. They are scheduled to leave St. Charles at 8 a.m. Monday morning and will arrive in Harrisonville by noon.

Opening statements are scheduled to take place Monday afternoon.

Kylr Yust’s lawyers push to present new defense strategy hours before murder trial scheduled to begin

A legal move Monday morning threw more uncertainty into the murder trial of Kylr Yust. He is charged with murdering Kara Kopetsky in April of 2007, and Jessica Runions in September of 2016.

Yust’s attorneys argued they want to present alternative suspects during the hearing. One of those suspects is Yust’s half brother, Jessep Carter. The issue is that Carter took his life in 2018 while in custody at the Jackson County Jail.

The defense argued that even though Carter is dead and can’t be cross examined, they should be able to present evidence that Carter, not Yust, killed both Kopetsky and Runions. The defense said it has witness testimony that Carter routinely drugged, assaulted and possibly murdered women at parties.

Runions disappeared from a party at a Grandview house in September of 2016. Witnesses said she was seen with Yust at that party.

The defense also claims that before killing himself, Carter left a coded message in his cell. They plan to present expert testimony that the message could say “I killed eleven girls.”

The judge in the case plans to hold a hearing at a later time to see what will be admissible at trial. He said the information about Carter cannot be used in opening statements.

The judge also ruled Monday morning that TV cameras will be allowed inside the courtroom during the trial.

Jurors are expected to arrived in Cass County around noon. They are being bussed in from St. Charles in the St. Louis area. Court is scheduled to being with jury instructions at 1:30 p.m. Opening statements are scheduled for 2 p.m.
