Authorities searching for missing 25-year-old woman

Several law enforcement agencies in Jackson County are searching for a missing 25-year-old woman.

Sydney Sutherland was last seen jogging in the area of Highway 18 between Newport and Grubbs around 2:30 p.m on Wednesday, according to Jackson County Emergency Management. She was wearing a white tank top and black athletic shorts.

Search continues for missing Jackson County woman last seen jogging near County Road 41 Wednesday afternoon

Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas says the search continues Thursday for Sydney Sutherland, 25.

According to Sheriff Lucas, teams searched until 2 a.m. Thursday, then resumed the search around 7:30 a.m.

Lucas says US Marshals, FBI, Tuckerman police, Newport police, Jonesboro police, Arkansas State Police and many more are helping the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in the search.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff, there are helicopters also taking part in the search.

Sheriff Lucas says a UPS driver saw Sutherland jogging in the area of Jackson County Road 41.

According to Lucas, Sutherland lives on Highway 18 between Newport and Grubbs and often takes a walk or jogs.

The sheriff says Sutherland lives with her boyfriend and there are no indication of any issues.

Investigators have also spoken with other family members.

According to Lucas, Sutherland had her phone and an Apple Watch with her. The sheriff says AT&T has received pings from her phone in that area. Officials are also trying to get information from the watch, Sheriff Lucas says.

Officials say Sutherland went to a gym in Jonesboro on Wednesday and investigators are looking at surveillance footage there.

Sheriff Lucas also warned there was some information put on social media about a truck out of Texas and two men who might have been involved. The sheriff says this information did not come from law enforcement.

Local rumors are flying. The name has only been released by one media outlet so far, so I'm going to change it to initials until LE confirms in case it's not the right person.

JUST IN: Local farmer, Q.L., has confessed to police that he was involved in the death of Sydney Claire Sutherland.

Reports coming in that the suspect stated he hit her and panicked. Police are reporting there is no indication she was hit by a vehicle at this time.

Sutherland’s body confirmed found by boyfriend’s parents; person of interest in custody

The parents of Sydney Sutherland’s boyfriend, Alex, posted on Facebook and confirmed that the body found Friday was that of Sydney Sutherland’s, and that an arrest has been made.

No names were released, but the post did say the person of interest did confess to investigators.

Pretty much matches what the FB page had too. The guy is claiming he struck her on the road and panicked and buried her on his land but that is being doubted as like you said, there is no indication she was struck... Per LE. I have stayed off most things today but the little I looked the rumors are flying as you say. Small close area and they likely know both parties or families...

Regardless, she is dead and may this very young woman RIP. Life is so very unfair sometimes...

Been reading the FB page for some time now. Haven't participated, just reading. Lots of talk but separating rumor from unproven chaff, it is clearly an area person who did this, clearly was someone known to the victim and others, not a stranger abduction, etc. Someone is in jail charged with capital murder and very few in this county were arrested or booked today so it probably is the guy and it fits.

Friends on FB whether bf with other guy or Sydney with perp's wife, etc. Inheritance rumor.

A capital murder charge in no way fits I hit her with a vehicle and panicked so there is more--clearly...

Small town, small area, both families known or so it sounds...

RIP Sydney. Too young and so unfair.

That had to have been the fastest DNA test in history.

Sheriff: DNA confirms body found is missing Jackson County woman; suspect in custody

The Arkansas State Medical Examiner in Little Rock has confirmed that the body found Friday in Jackson County is that of 25-year-old Sydney Sutherland, according to Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas.

KATV content partner Region 8 News reports that Lucas said that the state medical examiner’s office was able to confirm the identity through DNA. A Jonesboro man was being held in jail on a homicide charge in connection with the Sydney Sutherland case, Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas said Friday.

Lucas did not release the name of the suspect Friday and Saturday, pending formal charges. Lucas did say that the suspect did know Sutherland.

I read on the FB page (I think it was this case) that it was dental records but this does say DNA doesn't it?

That is fast as was the response to this woman missing. Not knocking it at all, thank goodness, just too bad they can't all be that way.

While Daily Mail is possibly my most hated website, they have named the perp and shown his picture. Quake Lewellyn. It wasn't her bf thank goodness, but it was someone local who knew her and it usually seems to be the case, someone known. For all we fear stranger danger which certainly does exist, 9 times out of 10 it seems to almost always be closer to home. I guess one thing to take from that is maybe we need to be more aware of those we see every day or know as much or more than we worry about strangers...

It is downright sad that a person, an adult, can't even take a walk any longer or a jog in their own rural small town neighborhood. Here is the article naming and picturing him.

1. Lewellyn Is a Third-Generation Farmer Who Said He ‘Always Worked on the Farm’

Lewellyn is a farmer who, together with three generations of his family, has owned and operated Lewellyn Farms in Newport, Arkansas, in Jackson County, for several years, according to an Arkansas Online article celebrating a 2016 award.

The article says that “the patriarch of the family” was assisted in his operation by “grandson, Quake Lewellyn.” Quake and two other members of the family “have their own farms as well,” the article says. “The Lewellyns are the 2016 Jackson County Farm Family of the Year,” it says.

The article says the family members “farm 5,800 acres in four counties — Jackson, Independence, Poinsett and Craighead. They raise 4,000 acres of rice and 1,800 acres of soybeans, which are all irrigated, and 100 acres of wheat.”

According to the article, Quake graduated from Tuckerman High School in 2010, and he told the publication, “I’ve always worked on the farm. I began driving a yellow Ford, … hauling seed for Dad. We all have our own farms, but we help each other out.”

2. Authorities Said Lewellyn Was Familiar With Sutherland Before the Murder

Lewellyn is believed to have “been familiar” with Sutherland, authorities said in the news conference, but they weren’t more specific.

3. A UPS Driver Confirmed Sutherland’s Sighting Near County Road 41

4. Sutherland Shared a Joking Meme About Being Murdered Only a Few Weeks Ago

“If I’m ever murdered, just know I ran my mouth to the bitter end,” the graphic she shared read. “Yes,” she wrote in the status.

5. Sutherland Was a Nurse Who Frequently Jogged in the Area, Authorities Say

According to her Facebook page, Sutherland worked as an “RN at Unity Health Harris Medical Center.” She went to Tuckerman High School, was from Grubbs, Arkansas, and listed herself as single. Her most recent post was about a rummage sale.

“There’s always going to be people that are quick to judge by your outer layer before they learn your heart! This describes me to a T❤️❤️❤️” she wrote in a recent post.

You always think you're safe in small communities and farmlands and for the most part, that's true. But there's always evil lurking around every corner of the globe.

And in this case, it was someone she knew it sounds like her entire life and if he had not done something like this to her previously, why would she even suspect such could happen? I guess if you think about it, it is more likely someone would have an issue with you or get obsessed with you, whatever the case was, if they saw you more often in the community or even knew you. I am not denying there are flat out stranger abductions of opportunity like Mollie Tibbets (and he did work in the area didn't he?) but I still think it is more rare. That person is taking an impulsive chance, not knowing what they might encounter or deal with.

I wonder if this was planned/premeditated. A few locals are saying he always had a thing for her but she did not for him. There is also talk she inherited a farm he thought was his or should be his or some such. I should stress this is "gossip". It is clear they did know each other though. I would guess tomorrow he would be charged and come before a judge and perhaps more info will come out.

Sad world, so young, a nurse, her entire life ahead of her...

I think that in some of these unsolved cases where women went missing, there's more of this going on than we realize. I do believe that's what happened with Lindsay Baum, for example. These men can't control themselves, or decide not to do anything about their evil compulsions.

I do too, I think some sit and obsess about something or someone and who knows, for months or years possibly, or who knows, some feel maybe he has done this before (conjecture). The sad fact is we have instincts but one never really knows what a person really has that may be a dark part inside they hide or try to. I keep thinking, and most women have probably been in such a situation, that he was probably an odd duck, perhaps she knew he had a thing for her, but she felt like she had dealt with him her entire life and could deal with it and he was again, just a bit odd or something. And/or she just tried to avoid him and stay aware... This is only speculation on my part though.

Officials have formally named a person who has been arrested in connection with the death of Sydney Sutherland.

Quake Lewellyn, 28, of Jonesboro was arrested and booked into the Jackson County jail in Sutherland’s death, according to Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas.

Lewellyn is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m. Monday for a first appearance in Jackson County Circuit Court in Newport in front of Circuit Judge Harold Erwin.

Well here ya go, about what people were saying... I am not good at linking Twitter so I copied and pasted:

Murdered Arkansas jogger, 25, was abducted, raped then buried by local farmer, police say as suspect is charged with her murder

A local farmer abducted, raped and buried a nurse who went missing while jogging in Arkansas last week, officials say.

On Monday police said during a probable cause hearing that Lewellyn spotted Sutherland on the highway as he was driving, doubled back, and abducted her then drove three miles away to a farm to rape her.

Lewellyn was silent on Monday and wore a bullet-proof vest and an orange prison jumpsuit as he walked up to the Jackson County courthouse for the hearing.

Authorities said he confessed to her killing when they questioned him about Sutherland’s disappearance.

Arkansas State Police agent Mike McNeal took the stand and explained how Lewellyn was traveling westbound on County Road 41 when he saw Sutherland walking by and turned around to abduct her.

He forced her in the back of his pick-up truck, drove about three miles to a farm where he raped her, killed her, then buried her body, according to KAIT.

The brief hearing did not address how Sutherland died. Sutherland’s family was present at the courthouse.

The judge found cause to charge Lewellyn and he was ordered to be held without bond until his next court date on October 1.
