Sheriff: UPS driver spotted missing woman Wed. afternoon walking; search continues

Jackson County authorities, along with volunteers, searched into the night Wednesday searching for a missing Jackson County woman.

According to Jackson County authorities, officials are looking for Sydney Sutherland, 25, who has not been seen since Wednesday afternoon.

During a press conference, Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas confirmed that a UPS driver notified them this morning, that he did see Sutherland Wednesday afternoon near County Road 41.

Lucas says with that sighting, and the phone pings they’re concentrating on that area, saying Sutherland normally walked a loop in that area between County Road 41, 42, 43, and Highway 18.

The county roads mentioned Sheriff Lucas cross Highway 67 Northeast of Newport at Exit 87.

Lucas referenced a white windmill near that exit. Lucas said anyone driving through that area Wednesday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. that saw anything should call the Jackson County sheriff’s office.

Lucas said information that you may not believe to be significant could very well be valuable to them so please report anything you saw.

Her vehicle and other personal items were still at her home. Authorities are concerned about her safety due to weather conditions as well as the time she has been missing.

Hmm. Shouldn't have looked at the FB page as now i am on a mission to read it all tonight and I need to go to bed so Frank goes to bed, the brat! I will say this, I don't know what it is that has changed but the FBI and US Marshalls right after an adult missing lately before a period of time or how many hours have even passed? That sure seems to have changed lately. At least in some areas.

I pray she is found and found safe.

Jackson County authorities are meeting with several different agencies to go over a new game plan for the search efforts of day 3 in the search of Sutherland.

Investigators are asking for property owners to check their property and outbuildings for anything suspicious, and if you find anything to call police immediately. Law enforcement will come and assist any homeowner who may need help searching their property.

Investigators urge searchers to also call police immediately, and not touch anything if they find anything while volunteers are searching the area.

A 1 p.m. press conference has been set to give the latest update on search efforts.

I missed most of the press conference. Into the questions now. Will have to wait for the media articles.

-What makes this get so much attention and so many shares, etc? Small town is a part of it, community comes together
-Possible leads, anything solid? Can't elaborate on that but we are working on some stuff
-50+ people and 200 volunteers yesterday, what does support mean? It really touches my heart knowing folks care. As far as getting them to continue to come out, that won't be an issue. When we need them, they're there.
-Anything you want to ask of the community? Just continue to think back to Wednesday if they were in the area or even driving down the interstate. If they saw anything give us a call. Even if they think it doesn't really matter we want to follow up.

It might be minor but I wish the press etc. could get things straight in a single case just once. From what I understand the UPS driver saw her around 2:30 to 3:00 or something like that and here WMC says evening.

Between last night and this morning, I read through the entire FB page. Most are putting a lot of hope and store in the Apple watch. I hope no perp is reading it or if "he" had no idea, the watch will now be ditched as well if it wasn't already... The good and bad of social media and people wanting to help...

This one is a tough one to call or have an opinion on. I tend to think like usual that it is someone close to home or in her area... I guess it could be random but an abduction of a grown and fit woman by a stranger, that stranger would have to be pretty prepared, weapon, opportunity, plan, etc... Unless she jogged or walked at the same time every day one would have to follow or lay in wait and hope to see her... If not from the area and just passing by, I don't really think that likely...

Could she have left willingly and wanting to? Possible but I doubt it unless phone was intentionally dropped and left there. We did have that woman whose phone was found in a dumpster who faked her disappearance... It has happened... But this woman here sounds unlikely to have done something like that...

Close to home, strange but localr, neighbor or loved one would be my best guess...

It is kind of gray from what I have read on who called her in missing and why so quickly... I also in reading everything have no idea of how they knew she was out for a run or walk for sure until the UPS driver said she saw her and that was later on by far...

This case had a really quick report and really rapid response. It makes me think something is known that the public does not know...

Just talking out loud and my speculation at the moment...

I don't usually jump to abduction but in this case that's what I'm thinking. She was "known to" take walks/jogs in that area. It wouldn't be hard for someone to have noticed her. Unlike Susanne Morphew, there was at least one confirmed sighting of her walking in that area. Her phone was found there after she was seen. With what we know right now, and how LE is behaving, I really think someone abducted her. It's surprisingly not rare.

I agree this is a likely possibility in this case. The "known to" though take walks still leads me to believe it is someone if not from the area, someone who has seen her before, stalks, goes by or lives if not there, within a radius in a neighboring area, to plan it somewhat, know where to drive, get away, etc. So possibly a stranger but not a stranger that just happens to be on a cross country road trip and lives in Maine and sees her for the first time when traveling through this area... Which could also be the case, but far more unlikely I think... I think it will be someone who knows of her, her routines, has seen her before and may be a local "stranger" have reason to travel the area routinely OR someone close to her...

With no signs of a struggle, but a phone found, that is odd to me though... And even though a UPS driver saw her, the time she actually went missing in relation to that is hard to say... I mean she could have reached home... Been abducted there, phone thrown out a car window by a perp... Or taken there... Hard to say... I suspect LE knows something that we do not and lol when is that not the case right??

She also could have had a car pull up, it was someone she knew, got in willingly, was overpowered and someone tossed the phone out the window...

Just thoughts...

They found her pretty darned fast, two days tops so I would assume the perp is going to be arrested pretty darned quick too if not already... I HOPE. I have no reason nor facts to accuse anyone in this situation but I think it shall be close to home whether a neighbor, a local (but stranger to her or mere acquaintance), someone in her inner life (most common), etc... Just my guess... No real reason to think that...
