Missouri deputies search for missing married couple Leo and Katherine Lindeman near Anderson

Investigators are searching for a married couple who are missing from rural southwest Missouri.

Leo and Katherine Lindeman were last in contact with someone on Sept. 16, 2026, near Anderson, Missouri, according to the McDonald County Sheriff's Office. They were reported missing Sept. 24, 2026.

Leo Lindeman, 73, is 5'7" and weighs 145 pounds. Katherine Lindeman, 74, is 5'2" and weighs 150 pounds.

A small dog owned by Leo and Katherine is also missing.

McDonald County Sheriff Rob Evenson says a neighbor became concerned after checking on the couple and finding their home empty.

The neighbor called 911, prompting deputies to conduct a preliminary search of the property.

Evenson says investigators later obtained a search warrant for the home and conducted a more extensive search.

About 20 dog search teams searched the Lindemans’ property and adjacent areas, looking for evidence of a struggle, forced entry or other signs that something may have happened to the couple.

Investigators did not find anything unusual.

“It looks as if they just left,” Evenson said. “We’re still hopeful. There’s no concrete evidence that something bad happened to them.”

Investigators also found the couple’s vehicle and their only known cell phone still at the home.

The sheriff says the couple’s front door and windows were open when investigators arrived, but that was not necessarily unusual.

“These folks didn't have air conditioning, so apparently it was not out of character for them,” Evenson said. “That’s what they did to ventilate the home.”

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence from inside the home, including the phone and a computer. They are also reviewing financial records and bank accounts as they try to determine what happened to the couple.

Evenson says leaving the property on foot would have been difficult because of the terrain.

“I wouldn't leave on foot,” he said. “It's very rough. Heavily wooded, with very steep hollows.”

Looks like their disappearance is still being investigated, even though I've seen some people concerned it hasn't been taken seriously enough.

What a mystery. I would be certain they got lost while out walking the dog, or maybe they couldn't find the dog and went looking for her. However, the "Amish people" story sounds too strange to ignore.

They were old enough that I doubt they ventured very far that they haven't been found by now with all of the search entities they've now had.

The amish story bothers me, too. Especially when it's said she met them at a laundromat . They don't use electrical appliances.

I saw one comment on FB that they were "former Amish", so who knows? The whole take is unverified at this point.

I'm talking about the couple that they were supposedly giving the house to. This couple did seem to live as if they were possibly formerly amish and moved there later.

That’s what I meant, the couple that was supposed to inherit the house.

McDonald County couple remains missing after one month

It has now been a month since a McDonald County couple was reported missing and investigators are no closer to figuring out this mystery.

Leo and Katherine Lindeman were reported missing on September 24, and that put law enforcement officials behind the 8-ball so to speak, because the last time anyone saw them was a week before that.

We spoke to McDonald County Sheriff Rob Evenson earlier this week and he tells us a recent search of the couple’s finances has turned up nothing significant that would help determine their whereabouts.

He says detectives are still waiting on information from a couple of search warrants and subpoenas and have sent the couple’s laptop to a computer lab for examination. The couple’s small white poodle is also missing.

There has been much speculation about what happened to the couple and Leo’s family said both he and Katherine were in poor health, but right now it seems they disappeared without a trace.

I’m still leaning toward them getting lost out in the woods somewhere. However, looking at that house makes me see why there’s a reason to believe someone would want to inherit it. What a nice place!

Lost in the woods would totally depend on their mobility ability. That area is very hilly and rocky, rough terrain with very thick woods.
I'm not convinced on anything at this point.

Search continues for married couple Leo and Katherine Lindeman, missing from Missouri home

You could say that Leo and Katherine Lindeman live off the grid.

The couple, both in their 70s, bought 15 acres of land in rural Anderson, Missouri, in 2021. Leo, a retired mason, built the home himself. Solar panels powered their appliances, and without air conditioning, they often left the doors and windows open to ventilate the house. Cell service was poor, so they primarily kept up with family via text.

For Leo and Katherine, it was perfect. They had friends in the area, but they spent most of their time on their property. “They really just wanted to retire and have peacefulness,” Leo’s sister-in-law Debra Lindeman told Dateline.

But around September 16, 2026, that peaceful life was shattered when Leo, Katherine, and their dog, Itty Bitty, vanished without a trace.

Dateline spoke with Debra and her daughter, LaShawnda Lindeman. Both live in Wichita, Kansas, and say the family received a call from Missouri law enforcement on September 24 informing them that a neighbor had reported Leo and Katherine missing.

According to LaShawnda, her aunt and uncle had a standing weekly dinner date with their neighbor. On September 15, Katherine went to the dinner while Leo stayed home, waiting for an appointment with an electrician.

The next day, September 16, the neighbor stopped by the Lindeman home to return dishes from the night before. He found the doors and windows open, but no sign of Leo or Katherine. He left the dishes on the table with a note. “He called them, texted them. He didn’t hear from them,” LaShawnda said.

The following week, when the Lindemans failed to show up for their regular dinner, the neighbor became concerned. “And when it came and went that they were supposed to come and have dinner with him, then he went back out there to check on them,” LaShawnda said.

When the neighbor returned, the dishes and note he’d left the previous week were still on the table, and there was no sign of the Lindemans. LaShawnda says the neighbor called the McDonald County Sheriff’s Department to report Leo and Katherine missing on September 24.

On September 26, the McDonald County Sheriff’s Office released a missing persons poster for Leo and Katherine on its Facebook page which confirmed they were reported missing on September 24 and gave an approximate date of disappearance as September 16. Dateline reached out to the McDonald County Sheriff’s Office for further information but has not yet received a response.

On September 28, LaShawnda and other members of the family traveled from Wichita to the Lindeman property to help with the search. “The gate was left unlocked, the home was left unlocked,” LaShawnda said. The couple’s vehicle was also on the property.

“When they left, they left — everything was in place,” Debra said. “The bed was made still. The house was in perfect order.” According to Debra, the couple’s personal belongings, including cell phones, IDs, and Katherine’s purse, were found inside the home.

Their medications were also left behind, particularly concerning given that Leo had survived five heart attacks and Katherine was living with lupus. “All the medication was still there,” LaShawnda said.

According to the family, none of this was typical behavior for Leo and Katherine. If the couple were traveling for an extended period, they would have closed up the house and taken their essential medications.

That same day the family arrived, a private drone operator from Arkansas met up with them at the property to help search for Leo and Katherine. The search turned up nothing.

LaShawnda says that on September 29, the McDonald County Sheriff’s Office processed the home and vehicle, and searched the property with canine units. “Nothing has been found,” LaShawnda said. “The dogs didn’t hit on anything.”

As the weeks pass, the Lindeman family fears the worst. “If somebody came and took them and kidnapped them, did anybody see them anywhere?” Debra wondered. “I’m sure there’s somebody out there knows something,” LaShawnda said.

The Lindeman family is counting on somebody to come forward. “The ultimate goal is to bring our family home,” LaShawnda said.
