  • Maj. Gen. William McCasland, a retired Air Force commander with a prominent background, has mysteriously disappeared in New Mexico.
Maj. Gen. William McCasland was the Commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. In that position, he was "responsible for managing the Air Force's $2.2 billion science and technology program as well as additional customer-funded research and development of $2.2 billion," his U.S. Air Force bio says.
That's a powerful position and, now, McCasland has mysteriously disappeared. That's caused some people on social media to draw parallels to the Nancy Guthrie abduction. As with Guthrie, 84, McCasland, 68, is an elderly person with some prominence and medical issues who suddenly disappeared in the American Southwest. Beyond that, though, there is no indication of any connection, and authorities have not said there is; unlike Guthrie, authorities have not said that McCasland, of New Mexico, was abducted, and he's not getting a lot of news coverage. They've issued a silver alert for him.
Still, as with Guthrie, the disappearance of William Neil McCasland is an odd case, largely due to his background. It's not every day that a retired general goes missing. Here's what's known about McCasland's disappearance.

Major Gen. William Neil McCasland Was Last Seen on Friday Morning, February 27

U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury published news of McCasland's disappearance on X late on March 1.
"Bernalillo County has issued a Silver Alert for retired Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland, a longtime leader at Kirtland and former commander of the Phillips Research Site and Air Force Research Laboratory," she wrote.

"He was last seen Friday morning near Quail Run Court NE, and due to medical concerns, authorities are asking for our community’s help. If you have any information, please contact the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Missing Persons Unit at 505-468-7070 or text BCSO to 847411." It's not clear what those medical concerns are. Bernalillo County is in New Mexico.

The Air Base Wing at Kirtland Says It Is 'Coordinating Closely With Local Authorities' Relating to the Missing General

The Air Force released a statement on the retired general's disappearance.
"We are coordinating closely with local authorities and defer all updates regarding the search efforts to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office," said Col. Justin Secrest, base commander of the 377th Air Base Wing at Kirtland, in a statement to the Albuquerque Journal."Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time."
The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office posted a missing person's photo of McCasland on Facebook, writing, "Due to his medical issues, law enforcement is concerned for his safety." He was last seen at 11 a.m. His clothing and direction of travel were unknown.

Who Is Retired General William McCasland?

McCasland was also responsible "for a global workforce of approximately 10,800 people in the laboratory's component technology directorates, 711th Human Performance Wing and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research," his Air Force bio says.

"General McCasland was commissioned in 1979 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in astronautical engineering. He has served in a wide variety of space research, acquisition and operations roles within the Air Force and the National Reconnaissance Office," it adds.
"He commanded the Phillips site of Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland AFB, N.M., and served as Vice Commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center and the Space and Missile Systems Center. He previously served at the Pentagon, first as the Director, Space Acquisition, in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, and then as Director of Special Programs, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics," the bio continues.
"General McCasland holds a doctorate degree in astronautical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studied under a John and Fannie Hertz Foundation fellowship."

Little is said about his lifestyle or the area where he was last seen. I’m wondering if he took a walk and had a health episode since he’s got some health issues.

More info. It does appear they are concerned about him having a medical episode

Mysterious disappearance of UFO-linked Air Force general sparks nationwide search

A retired US Air Force general who led laboratories linked to UFO research has been reported missing from New Mexico.

'Due to his medical issues, law enforcement is concerned for his safety,' the office said.

McCasland, a veteran of Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, previously led both the Phillips Research Site and the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson in Ohio.

Some UFO enthusiasts have linked those facilities to secret studies of advanced aerospace technology and unexplained phenomena, though officials maintain they focus on national security and experimental defense projects.

McCasland oversaw research at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he managed the Air Force's $2.2 billion science and technology program, along with additional customer-funded research.

Wright-Patterson has long been linked in UFO lore to the alleged study of materials from the 1947 Roswell incident, though official reports attribute the debris to Project Mogul balloons.

He retired from the Air Force in 2013 and later held private-sector positions, including director of technology at Applied Technology Associates.

There is no public evidence that he participated in UFO crash retrievals, reverse-engineering of non-human technology, or classified extraterrestrial programs.

His documented work focused on advanced aerospace research, which has fueled speculation about experimental propulsion and unidentified phenomena in defense circles.

He is "physically fit", and then later it says "he has medical issues". HUH?

Regardless, it's not uncommon for people to be hiking alone and have a medical episode. I'm leaning that way in this case, for now.

Possibly needing medications would fit the both "physically fit" and "having medical issues". In missing adults, often without some kind of "emergency" criteria, reports are often not even taken. We've seen this countless times. That's all I come up with in combining both reports.

BCSO seeks public’s help in locating missing retired Air Force general in Albuquerque

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. William “Neil” McCasland, who disappeared from an Albuquerque neighborhood on Feb. 27.

“We believe there are people who have information valuable to locating Neil who have not yet spoken to law enforcement. This could include people who have been in the Sandia mountains and may have seen Neil or captured him on a GoPro or other recording device, specifically on Friday, February 27 or Saturday, February 28,” the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release, asking anyone with information to come forward regardless of how insignificant they might think their information might be.

McCasland, 68, was last seen at his home on Quail Run Court in Albuquerque and is believed to have left his home on foot. So far, investigators have only said they’re concerned for McCasland’s safety because of medical reasons.

“It is unlike Neil to be out of touch from his family and friends for this length of time; but we have not given up hope. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek the community’s help in locating him,’ BCSO stated in the news release.

The sheriff’s office is working with the FBI and other partner agencies, including Kirtland Air Force Base, and so far, has not found any evidence of foul play.

“We are, however, utilizing all possible resources, including advanced technologies, and still considering all possible scenarios as we follow up on leads towards locating Neil,” BCSO added.

Search for missing retired Air Force General has few clues

With the search for retired Air Force General William McCasland now in its second week, there is still uncertainty about where he may have gone or whether he is still alive.

New Mexico Search and Rescue was activated again Saturday to search the Elena Gallegos Open Space area after clothing was found just north of his home on Quail Run Court NE in the Sandia Foothills. It isn't known whether it was clothing McCasland was wearing.

Search and Rescue spokesperson Laura Dodge said that a line search on a tight grid used trained volunteers on foot and on horseback with dogs teams "just to find out if we find any more clues, if we find this gentleman or his remains, unfortunately."

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office and the FBI have been involved in the search, but so far they don't know if they are looking in the right area, Dodge said.

"It's like we are looking for a needle in a haystack, but we don't know what haystack we're looking for," Dodge said.

Hundreds of homes contacted in search for missing retired Air Force general

A retired U.S. Air Force general has been missing for 11 days, and NewsNation has now learned hundreds of homeowners have been contacted for security camera footage, resulting in no reported sightings.

“Investigators have contacted more than 600 homeowners in the neighborhood near Mr. McCasland’s residence to request security camera footage or information,” the sheriff’s office told NewsNation Tuesday. “To date, no sightings have been reported.”

Authorities also said they’ve “received dozens of tips” related to the investigation.

In a March 6 release, the sheriff’s office said it hadn’t uncovered any evidence of foul play but was still considering all possible scenarios.

McCasland’s vast institutional knowledge of UFO research is leading some to believe something nefarious might have happened to him.

Investigative journalist and NewsNation correspondent Ross Coulthart said he believes McCasland’s disappearance is a “grave national security crisis.”

Wife of Missing UFO Expert Addresses ‘Misinformation’ Around Case

The wife of retired Air Force Major General William Neil McCasland has addressed what she called “misinformation” about his disappearance.

His wife, Susan McCasland Wilkerson, issued a statement against “misinformation” in which she said her husband did not have dementia and dispelled rumors about a “concerning” phone call.

She also said she doubts that Neil McCasland was kidnapped for any classified information he may have known from his career in the military or for his “brief association with the UFO community.”

She said she wanted to “dispel” some of the “misinformation” about the case, including what she said were some people’s assumptions that the health condition mentioned in the Silver Alert issued for McCasland was Alzheimer's.

“Neil is at some risk, but not from dementia,” Wilkerson said. “He was not confused and disoriented.”

Wilkerson also said, “There was no concerning Friday-morning telephone call to a close relative.”

“I have been in contact with all of his close relatives and some not-so-close ones,” she said. “This is a complete fabrication.”

Wilkerson then went on to say that while her husband “had access to some highly classified programs and information,” but retired nearly 13 years ago, and “has had only very commonly held clearances since.”

“It seems quite unlikely that he was taken to extract very dated secrets from him,” she said.

I think he got lost out there on a hike somewhere.

BCSO releases new timeline on missing retired Air Force general

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office released more details Thursday regarding the ongoing search for 68-year-old William “Neil” McCasland.

McCasland, a retired U.S. Air Force general, has been missing since Feb. 27, 2026. He was last seen at his home in the area of Quail Run Court NE.

A timeline from BCSO reveals McCasland interacted with a repairman around 10 a.m. on Feb. 27. His wife returned home at 12:04 p.m. to find him missing. His phone and glasses were left behind, and he was reported missing at 3:07 p.m.

BCSO has identified missing items, including hiking boots and a .38 caliber revolver. A gray U.S. Air Force sweatshirt found nearby prompted further searches, though it’s not confirmed to be his.

BCSO has expanded its neighborhood canvass to over 700 homes, seeking security footage. Despite extensive searches, no confirmed sightings or videos of McCasland have emerged.
