‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Savannah Guthrie Pledges $500,000 to National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

“Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie and her family have pledged half a million dollars to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) to support other families experiencing similar situations.

The donation accompanies a $1 million reward offered by the family for information leading to the recovery of their 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie.

Michelle DeLaune, CEO, National Center for NCMEC confirmed the donation in a statement.

“Their donation is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: when a family is in crisis, they deserve someone to stand with them,” DeLaune wrote. “We are honored by their trust and inspired by their dedication to strengthening support for all families in crisis.”

DeLaune said their support will help provide guidance and resources for loved ones “living with pain and uncertainty” as they continue to search for answers in the disappearances of loved ones.

I'm thankful they made this donation. NCMEC is a terrific organization.

Brian Entin said one of the neighbors that he befriended is letting him park in her driveway. I am wondering if they felt safer with the activity around them.
The nice respectful ones are not the issue. Often they will give somebody a stipend to be able to park on their property. They are then out of the way and this are the ones that are also usually the non issue entities.

Very cool!

This is the full video from approx half past midnight till around 06.00 a.m. and shows about 5 or 6 cars go by altogether.

It only activates when the movement of the cars is detected.

While I'd hope the back road video is helpful, it's a bit hard to get excited over much in this case any longer. It has had such publicity and it's what four weeks in and only now this comes up? Hopefully it's worthwhile but seen too much that hasn't been I guess.

It would mean much more to look further into that and see if that is actually typical traffic or not. I quit just looking at ours because I found out there really is a LOT that goes on when I'm not looking.
We have many shift workers and then you get people leaving bars that take the back routes.

I'm on a "back road" and per my cameras, I average 2-5 cars going by in those time frames.

That's why I wonder if that is average or not in their case. I would have to look at many more days than just one and also see if it's an usual vehicle or not.
I think it's certainly worth having an investigator looking into it, especially after having followed BK's route in Idaho.

Was this camera anywhere near the report of a woman screaming out of a car window? Do we know?

It came up before i believe but LE were not looking at anything outside a 2 mile radius. This video was just outside that radius so now they are looking at it. However, if it never got closer than 2 miles from Nancy's residence, i cannot see that it will be relevant now.
