‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Just watched one from Gigi, just a short. I could have linked it but as she said, there hasn't been a lot to report. LE apparently now saying they think more than one person involved. Hardly a shocking revelation although I remain unconvinced whether one or more. Also that the genetic thing is going on and there is biological evidence though not detailing what, from inside the home. I'm not convinced they have much of anything. That guy was so covered...

Two I heard recently think the video is of him after and that he entered through the back or elsewhere. If that's the case, what is in the backpack could be things from Nancy's house. However, Dr. G gave a pretty good view of it open and with what looks like a tarp in it. But why do you need a tarp if you don't intend to kill Nancy? This case just boggles...

Awfully quiet which makes it seem the two raids were what they felt were their best shots at this and after that, they have no idea of who did it/where she is...

I'm trying hard to look at this in some other way... If that is him after, then she is already in a car I'd think and he is going up to take care of that camera where they exited right...? Or to be sure nothing was dropped or something and then he notices the camera...? I'm not convinced of ANYTHING in this one including where he entered...

IS IT POSSIBLE he was already in the home when she got home...? Do the other things in the timeline still work then? Her opening and shutting the garage still work... What else was there? Disabling the camera... Her disconnecting from her watch and phone...

So I dismissed the botched robbery thing but could she have just interrupted a robbery...?

How about this? The Uber driver knew she was not at home... She's 84 and called for an Uber to a well to do area and easy to figure if she needs an Uber and at her age, she likely lives alone... @Cousin Dupree If he kept his app for Uber up, could he see if she ever called for an Uber to the daughter's home for a return ride? Maybe he assumed since she Ubered there, she'd be Ubering back, and because he never saw a ride called for, thought the home was still empty and she was still at the daughter's...? It doesn't mean that it had to be the driver, he could be giving info to a partner...

I still think there's a possibility that the person did not know Savanna was her daughter.. HEck, I think there are all sorts of possibilities, we just don't know enough.

I almost think they must have recovered video of him and Nancy leaving out the front door but they haven't shared it... We KNOW it is an exit because Nancy's blood is there, we just don't know where he entered. There also HAS to be a car imo parked where we can't see with lights off. Some reporters, etc. seem to think Nancy was almost totally not ambulatory but imo that's nowhere close to true.

She is able to get in and out of an Uber, she's not using assisted transport. I know from this last year for me what it's like to be "hardly" ambulatory and not able to get in and out of a vehicle on my own. Thank God now I can. I couldn't get downstairs but I could manage the minimum in my apt, very little for a time, but managed. She is going out to her daughter's, she got around, just couldn't go far for any amount of time is how it sounds to me.

I'm not going to get anywhere with this, the case is just BUGGING me and felt a need to talk some out to think it better.

I don't have much faith here even with all the people on it. I don't know that I think they have anything from "him" as to DNA. They might but not convinced it will turn out being his. I think they ran with their best information with the two raids which resulted in little. I do still have a little hope on the last one but not convinced. And now it's quiet.

They MAY get him with a lot of looking at cars in other videos and trying to string something together, the backpack, maybe the DNA, and other things, maybe in time... But I don't think they will find her alive. I don't know that she was not long after they left.

SO, it appears she was alive when they exited but the question is, WHY did they take her.....????? Why take her to kill her or why take her just to disappear her...?????

Long, I'm sorry. Anyone can scroll past. Won't bother me. Just trying to talk some things "out loud" and figure them out, of which it won't do anyhow... Maybe it will give other's thoughts though that haven't crossed my mind...
Any other cases come to mind where someone was ambushed in their home and removed from the premises? I'm going to have to think on that.

And of that age?? And not for ransom or so it appears since that has fallen off. It's just so strange. I can't think of one like it with her age and health conditions...

Thanks to Banfield, a lot of people out there still think it is the SIL and wife. I'm not going to say it couldn't end up that way but the reason isn't there no? I mean a lot kill for money but they usually need that money quickly and are in a tight spot AND they need the person found dead to collect life insurance or anything from a will and that didn't happen here... And they've been cleared supposedly...

I posed one theory somewhere above where let's say someone hired this guy to kill her and make it look like this or that...She begged him not to and said her daughter would pay?? Maybe?

Or maybe it was a surprised robber as I mentioned with the Uber thought... They just didn't know what to do with her when surprised... One can expound from that...

Finally, there is some other reason involving Savanna perhaps. Not that she's part of it, I mean relates to her... Her job is likely coveted by more than a few in the industry... She just had surgery and had 3 weeks off and someone had to cover for her... She was set to go cover the Olympics, probably also coveted... And then this derailed it all and now others are also filling in and who knows if she will ever go back... Or a stalker, or for revenge/jealousy.

I guess those 3 possibilities are my main leanings right now. If just a robber though, he sure so far covered his arse and no arrests yet, wasn't dumb it appears...

Why if you are totally disguised do you mess with cameras instead of just getting in and out though as fast as one can...? Why even bother with them... What did that one show...? Nancy injured probably for one...

Sorry, just can't help thinking out loud right now... Any thoughts?

If someone calls for an Uber and it goes out for someone to take, that would be recorded as a request.

Today I had a request that I accepted. 3/4 of the way there the customer canceled. It will still show up in the records.

If someone calls and hangs up before talking to anyone, I think the phone company may have a record of the attempt to call.

As for the guy trying to cover up the camera, it's an amateur idiot. He tries to block the camera with some fresh picked flowers. Obviously, they didn't plan this very well. Bring some spray paint or duct tape.

Without knowing why she was killed or abducted, they're looking for almost anyone. It could've been me. Fortunately, being 2,000 miles away gives me a solid alibi.

You, on the other hand

Okay but what about a return trip? That's really not what I wanted to know. So say you take someone dripping in jewelry to a family member's. Say you are a thief but drive an Uber, or your friend is. So you know that trip to the family member's means this person is not at home and think okay, that was a nice neighborhood and she had some quality jewelry on, and maybe she has more in her home and she's not home... And you go there to rob or you call a partner to do so....

Then if you stay clocked into the app, could you see when someone at that address called for a RETURN ride...? That's what I was asking...

As for me, I'm tons of miles away too and believe me if I can't work, I'm not mobile enough to kidnap a woman. I also don't take Ambien so I wasn't driving in my sleep or anything I might not be aware of. :D

Yes, the flowers seemed amateurish BUT I think he perhaps noted that camera at the last minute or some such. Not sure either that he entered with any intent of leaving with an injured woman and out the front door. Hard to be sure of anything. What we do know is no arrest has been made so he wasn't that bad at things...

So can you watch and see when an address calls for a ride home...? That was my question and I don't think you answered it.

But can y

You only see the call you've been given. If someone is of the mind to rob a house, they'd go offline.

Forget if it was the person or not, could be telling a "partner".

So you can't see where rides you can pick up are? Before you take them or once you take them, etc.? So you could grab one and it could be in Timbuktu? Seriously asking. I find with grocery delivery drivers learn who is who on calls and which ones are worth it. You don't recognize certain ones that for instance, maybe repeat? Seriously asking how it works.

I don't Uber enough to remember customers. I've had customers remember me.

I think they'll show you the customer rating, but, I've never looked for it. If it's offered to me I just take it. I believe that customer's can see the driver's rating.

Passengers can program multi stops. I've only seen multiple stops when I'm picking up another passenger who's a friend of the original passenger, or a quick stop at a convenience store.

I've turned down runs because the destination is away from where I'd like to go. (I.E. the opposite direction of my apartment, when I want to end my day.) I'm also shown the pickup address. Uber and Lyft can tell who the closest driver is and offer it to them.

I can call someone on the way to pick up runs. So if I had dropped off Nancy, I could call a friend on my way to the next run. So that would be possible. I think Uber and Lyft would have a record of the phone number I called. They say they don't listen to calls.

Is that what you're asking? Be more specific if it's not.

O/T Now that I'm taking Lyft runs, customer's can pick you as a "favorite driver" That means if you are near their request for a pickup, you'll jump other drivers in the que to get them.

My brother who also Lyfts and Ubers told me that a Lyft customer picked him as a favorite driver. His first one. He has been driving for Lyft since 2016. He has probably taken over 50,000 Lyft calls.

I have been driving for Lyft for six months. I mostly Uber. I've taken less than 200 Lyft calls. I have seven favorite driver designations. I was stunned he only had one in ten years.

I think he should let PR people handle this.
I think he is entitled to comment when asked. He got the FBI involved quickly for the family and now they are looking in Mexico, so having them involved was the right move.

Of course it may not change the outcome if she was killed during a burglary and her body has been disposed of across the border.

Didn't the Sheriff fight the FBI's involvement?

Hmm. Not exactly what I wanted to know but close... So you could let someone know you think a home is empty if you had just dropped off the resident somewhere is what you are saying right? But no way to see if that customer or someone at that address calls for a return ride...? That you know of?

On the other hand I've heard of enough things that mess with the system... Whatever that's called, spamming it or something?

I forgot you also drive for Lyft now.

I found a case where a woman missing from Michigan was found 4 hours away in Indiana. She wasn't taken from her home, though, I don't think. LE thinks she was killed in Michigan.

I don’t think this is related to NG. Just a recent example of how far away a body was dumped.

I don't think myself, jmo, all the knocking of the sheriff helps one thing in this investigation and in fact hinders it imo. It isn't where the focus should be.

I keep thinking of all the bodies that aren't found for years in the desert. I don't know why I just do. Isn't it the Vegas area outskirts that's been said about a lot....

I'm starting to think she wasn't alive for long but just am not sure why then they took her at all...

This case is a frustrating head scratcher. And sadly it's been so long, it's a bit hard to think they have kept her alive or taken care of her all of this time...

I am not notified that the customer has a call to leave the place I dropped them off.

Any other cases come to mind where someone was ambushed in their home and removed from the premises? I'm going to have to think on that.
Yes, there are cases where the person was taken from their home for various reasons.
Dennis Radar took two victims from their homes. One, he said so that he could tie her up and take pictures and the other, because she told him she was expecting company.
In the Russell and Shirley Desmond case, it's a mystery as to why Shirley Desmond was taken elsewhere...
And there's the following more recent case (2022, conviction 2025) where apparently, the reason the body was moved was to cover-up a sexual assault and murder.
I think surely there are other cases that we're unaware of.
