‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I don't say this often about anyone but these two women are exceptional. They should replace a lot of talking heads who aren't. I've seen Maureen many times on with Brian but not her friend, and Maureen tempers Brian, brings him down a bit sometimes lol, I saw that in Reiner too.

This show was GOOD. EXCELLENT in fact. And Entin himself gained some points back with me, he's been a lot better since his deal. Mostly... These women carried the show, but imo he asked questions that were good too.

I'm always interested in his take. Most people really like him. He doesn't push his channel hard, and he's not on all of the time, and only on certain cases. Makes me think more of him actually.

I think he may have made it a day or two ago but put it up today.

It's worth watching imo. Under 20 minutes. And he's sane, and not a newscaster or in the crazy hype. It is only his opinion based on what we have.

For one thing he points out the backpack is open. It takes me a minute to see that he's right but he is, he slows things and shows them and zooms in, etc.. And that what is sticking out of it is a tarp he thinks. There are a few very good observations. While I don't agree with all, I agree with most of it, and nothing crazy in it.

@Cousin Dupree I'm going to ask you to watch it and if you would, please watch the ad for his sponsor and listen to it instead of skipping over it. I'm not saying you need the product but I think you do need to do what the product does, for yourself. Jmo. Many do. It's the wisest way.

Now, I heard a theory tonight that I kind of perfected a bit that I think isn't a bad one. Let's just say that someone paid the guy in the video to kill Nancy. Whether for revenge, someone would benefit if she died (and I am not accusing anyone, I have been disgusted with people out there who are stuck on the family ever since Banfield pulled her sh*t), or for ransom even for themselves and I'm just going to give an example. Someone offers him $50K and says if he does this, then he will pay him when he collects or he pays him half and has the money, something on that order. Anyhow the guy is getting paid, a lot of money for him. Now he goes to do it and Nancy begs him not to kill her and says I have a daughter who will pay you big time if you just don't kill me...? And he realizes the $50K is paltry and he can do this himself and she's suggesting it....

Now that actually makes as much sense as any theory I've heard.

There are some problems with it like Nancy would know the personal numbers for him to contact the family instead of the media... But maybe he laid off her and she died anyhow from the injury he gave her before she pled for this, or from lack of medicine... Before it could be acted pm and he didn't have the info to contact them directly...

It's a thought anyhow. I'm not sold on it. But watch Dr. G. and how he thinks this guy did not know the home well but was not there to rob, etc. and then come back and think about this theory... It's not the worst one in this make no sense case. It's not his theory, it's one I saw in a chat. Then I watched his show and just kind of tried to make what he thought work with that theory... His theory isn't bad either...

I'm ad free, but am curious about it. I think he makes some excellent points. The bag being overstuffed I've never seen anyone talk about before. Someone with medical knowledge would have taken her meds with them. They wouldn't want to murder her, I would think.

Some good and some questionable. JMO

Savannah Guthrie makes new plea for missing mom's return

03:07

What we covered here

• No leading theory: Investigators have still not identified a leading motive for Nancy Guthrie’s February 1 disappearance from her Arizona home, with authorities looking at all possible options, a source told CNN. Her family members — including her children and their spouses — are not suspects in the case, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Monday.

• Glove analysis: A glove found near Guthrie’s home appears to match the ones worn by a suspect seen in her home’s doorbell camera footage, according to the FBI. DNA from the glove is being analyzed in an attempt to identify a suspect as the search stretches into a third week.

• Another appeal: “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie posted another video on social media Sunday, saying her family still has hope for her mother’s return. “It is never too late to do the right thing,” she said.

Our live coverage of the search for Nancy Guthrie has moved here.

4 hr 10 min agoFamily members not being suspects is a "strong indicator of progress," analyst saysFrom CNN's Karina Tsui

Nancy Guthrie’s family members not being suspects in her disappearance is “a very strong indicator of progress,” CNN law enforcement contributor Steve Moore said.

Investigators “have to have enough information to exclude them, which means they are gaining more and more information on the case itself,” Moore, a retired supervisory special agent with the FBI, said.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement Monday saying all of Guthrie’s family members, including her adult children and their spouses, are not suspects in the case. “The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case,” Sheriff Chris Nanos said in the statement posted on X.

Ad free works even when they talk in a show of a sponsor?? News to me. May have to get that. You just purchase the YT ad free?

Yeah, I don't have the same opinion of all he said but think he's got some very good points which is why I linked it. He really slows the videos and shows various angles to catch what he is talking about. He is covering some of the Epstein stuff too. He doesn't do every case but he's usually worth a watch, he's not over the top and most people who check him out like him imo. And they are almost never a long watch either.

Really quiet in here today. Clearly nothing new in this case anyway. I watched a video today that thought there were two guys. One going around doing the cameras and the one dealing with the doorbell cam. I will find it again and link it.

ETA Sorry but cannot find it so NVM.

I've heard some that think it's 2. It'c certainly possible but not all think that. I posted a few in which some in them think there were two also.

One thinks someone else was driving and maybe parked the car just into the driveway and had the lights off. I tend to think that's possible myself. I don't think he walked, but he also could have driven himself...

Some also think he went in the back door and they came out the front. I lean that way. That also could have been just him or two of them.

I also am tired of the 41 minute assumption. I don't happen to believe it was the likely 41 minutes. I think he was in there less than 20 minutes.

It is quiet.

Personally, I got tired of the hype in this case. Catching up on it once a day is enough for me at this point. Still hoping and praying for a miracle and that Nancy is returned alive!

Same here. If it was mentioned before, I didn’t know it.
The opposite for me. I hear the 41 minutes from everyone. Every network channel, every YT channel, etc. And I don't believe in the 41 minutes so I actually get ticked that everyone assumes it is correct, and everyone (mostly) does.

Not in show stuff, I thought you said it was at the beginning.

I gather a Milwaukee attorney has put up a $100K reward through Crimestoppers. Not the same reward we know of. Says theirs is anonymous and doesn't have the same conditions, and he doesn't know why they did not do it that way in this case.

No kidding! I personally don't think the reward is still high enough. I guess though a person who could get that one and also the one offered with more conditions would get $200K, if not, just the $100K.

TMZ said it so definitely not going to link them. I heard the attorney say it though.

This is ridiculous!

Shirts and gloves. What next? Not very responsible are they?

Entin yesterday was saying they bought a box of black gloves to show viewers what they look like in different shows I think and he was saying to his guests (one I linked above with Maureen in it) he thought yeah he'd better be careful and not lose all the gloves. I think that is when Maureen told him yeah, you're in enough hot water as it is lol.

He said yeah imagine if DNA in them came back to me...

All I have to say is it BETTER not have been him. Kind of funny though lol.

It is not funny, however, when evidence matters and people involved in the search are ditching their things and they end up found when looking for evidence!

That's a rather flip comeback.
