‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Man released after being questioned by police said he didn't know who Nancy Guthrie was, reporter says

From CNN's Helen Regan
CNN affiliate KNXV reporter Lillian Donahue said her colleagues spoke to the man who said he was detained for questioning in the search for Nancy Guthrie.

The man said “he didn’t even know who this woman (Nancy Guthrie) was, that he works as a delivery driver,” Donahue told CNN’s Rosemary Church, adding she saw him drive his car back into the Rio Rico neighborhood where a home had been searched Tuesday night.

Donahue said authorities have since left the home in Rio Rico and opened up the scene.

In a video of the interview shared by KNXV reporter Ford Hatchett, the man said his wife was driving when they pulled over because police were following them.

“They told me I was being detained for kidnapping. I asked them, ‘kidnapping of who?’” the man, who authorities have not identified, said.

“I told them … I might have delivered a package to their house but I never kidnapped anybody.”

Not knowing who Nancy Guthrie was, is kinda like Not knowing who OJ was. In NYS coverage is saturated, even on local news.

In that area it's got to be so much more intense.

A person who was detained for questioning in the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has been released, and insists he has never even heard of the 84-year-old.

The man was brought in for questioning on Tuesday in connection with the alleged kidnapping of the mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie.

The man, who identified himself to reporters only as Carlos, has already been released by authorities after being detained by law enforcement in Rio Rico, around an hour’s drive south of Tucson, Arizona.

Speaking to reporters outside his home, Carlos said he had no idea why he was brought in for questioning and that he just works as a delivery driver in Tucson.

“I felt like I was being kidnapped. They didn’t tell me anything at the beginning,” Carlos said.

“They held me against my will,” he added. “They didn’t even read me my rights until two hours later.”

“What the f--- am I doing here? I didn’t do anything to be honest, I’m innocent.”

In another interview with ABC 15 Arizona, Carlos said: “They told me I was being detained for kidnapping. And I asked him, I was kidnapping of who? And they told me this lady, I don’t know her name.”

“Nancy Guthrie?” reporter Ford Hatchett asks. “Yeah, that’s her,” Carlos replied, with a nod of his head.

He added, “I told him, I work in Tucson for GLS. I might have delivered a package to her house, but I never kidnap anybody.”

Carlos said he was in custody for around eight hours until he was allowed to leave. He added that he had “never heard” of Nancy Guthrie until he was brought in for questioning.

“I hope they get the suspect, because I’m not it. And they better do their job and find the suspect that did it so they can clear my name, I’m done,” Carlos said.

The man was detained after the FBI released chilling video footage and photos of a person in a ski mask and gloves appearing to tamper with Nancy Guthrie’s security camera at her home.

FBI Director Kash Patel—who has faced criticism for his handling of other high-profile investigations—had earlier boasted to Fox News’ Sean Hannity that the agency was looking into “persons of interest” in connection with Guthrie’s disappearance and that “substantial progress” had been made in the case.

Officials did not reveal if they believed the man they brought in for questioning was the same person seen in the Nest doorbell footage.

On Tuesday night, the mother-in-law of the man detained and released by authorities said that Carlos had nothing to do with the abduction of Nancy Gutherie.

The woman, Josefina, added that her son-in-law does not look anything like the man seen in the black-and-white surveillance footage released by the FBI.

Nancy Guthrie was dropped off at her home at around 9:48 p.m by her family on the night of Jan. 31. At 1:47 a.m., the doorbell camera at her home disconnected, according to Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

The 84-year-old was then reported missing by her family on Feb.1, and she has not been seen since.

The person questioned over Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has been released. Here's the latest

From CNN's Jessie Yeung
Authorities have released a person who was being questioned in Rio Rico, about 60 miles south of Tucson near the Mexico border, according to CNN affiliate KNXV. Law enforcement also searched a car and a home in the town.

Authorities have still not been able to locate the mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, a law enforcement source told CNN.

Here’s a timeline of all the developments since her disappearance.

Here’s what we know:

  • Detained person released: The person released by law enforcement after being detained for questioning was stopped during a traffic stop in Rio Rico. The man said “he didn’t even know who this woman (Nancy Guthrie) was, that he works as a delivery driver,” CNN affiliate KNXV reporter Lillian Donahue told CNN’s Rosemary Church.
  • Search warrant: Investigators have completed their search of a property in Rio Rico, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said. A woman previously told CNN that it was her home that was being searched and that authorities were investigating her son-in-law.
  • “Persons of interest”: Earlier on Tuesday, FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is looking at “persons of interest” in the case. He did not say who might be under suspicion, but said authorities were going through the process of elimination.
  • Door cam footage: Also on Tuesday, the FBI released doorbell camera footage from outside Guthrie’s front door taken the night she disappeared, showing a masked, armed person. Engineers at Google, which owns the doorbell camera maker Nest, were able to recover data after several days.
