‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Well, I guess there is a lot out there that would have told anyone Savanna was from Tucson and home is still "there", etc. From 3 months ago... I've seen a few now. Not sure why they'd put them out ther now--well we know why, but why tell even more than all of us who already know now...

Well if, as some think, there was communication with the kidnapper outside of the public eye, and payment, then what is left is to see if they return Nancy here shortly...

IF that's the case.

Has it been 12 hours since the ransom scheduled handover yet? They said it would take that long to return her.

That would be 5 a.m. Tucson time. At present it is 8 a.m. EST.

So currently it is just past 6 a.m. in Tucson. Any news?

Early reporting indicated that Nancy Guthrie had been scheduled to attend an in-person church service in Tucson that morning and was reported missing after she failed to show up. According to the family source, that account is not accurate.

The source told Fox News that for years — dating back to the COVID pandemic — Nancy and a small group of close friends had a standing Sunday routine that did not involve attending church in person. Instead, the group would gather at one another’s homes to watch a New York–based church service via livestream.

The service was broadcast live from a New York church attended by Savannah Guthrie, the longtime "TODAY" show co-anchor and Nancy Guthrie’s daughter.

On Sunday, Feb. 1, Nancy was expected to be at a friend’s home to watch the livestream, as she had done every week. When she failed to arrive, members of the friend group became concerned.

According to the source, one of the friends contacted Annie — Nancy’s daughter and Savannah Guthrie’s sister — to report that Nancy had not shown up and could not be located.

The source emphasized that Nancy was never scheduled to attend a Tucson church service that day, contrary to some reports, and said the misunderstanding has led to confusion about the circumstances surrounding when she was first reported missing.

Interesting that the live stream story was true, just not in the way that we were imagining it.

NBC news just came on and someone being interviewed said that the ransom demand, may be coming from another country.

The ransom demand said they wanted the money in USD. If they were USA residents, they wouldn't ask for USD, it would be assumed they wanted American currency value.
I’ve been wondering if the whole ransom thing was a total hoax for about a week now. It really did seem more like a computer scammer type thing to me.

I disagree with NBC News. Canada has dollars. It makes sense to me they demanded USD. They didnt demand 6 million BTC, they demanded 6 million USD.

Canada has dollars but Tucson is extremely close to Mexico too. However, I don't know why anyone would say USD to who is likely Savanna who would be paying it...

So it does seem just a bit odd to me... It could indicate a kidnapper that often is out of the US and deals with more than just US currency too...

It might be a hoax and may not, I'm still not sold on anything. I do have a leaning in this case but am certainly not 100 percent on where I lean either...
