‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime​

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.


On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I would guess all of these requests are frauds, especially the 6 million one OR she's been dead since she was taken, which is why there has been no proof of life sent. I'm pretty sure if they got the proof of life, they would have paid it. It should be simple to provide IF its real and she is still alive.

Probably the most interesting thing I heard on this quiet day on this case was Entin saying the Circle K is just a minute from Annie's house and not near Nancy's.

I think all stripped away, it points more one way than any way. However, they are definitely trying to make it seem as if not perhaps.

He can sometimes go over the line a bit much imo but he generally does not report what he hasn't seen or heard himself from a source that knows.

He's been between both houses plenty and likely into the Circle K himself OR was it even him who talked to the Circle K employee? Can't recall.

I of course didn't mean it that way. And said as much in that it was touching and heartbreaking to try to be sure no one took me that way.

I'm just a bit lost on the reason for it. I think there is one though.

I'm totally gripped on this case and the family's heartbreak and how much worse it must be for them and all of us feel it but a millionfold for them. Well some of the family for sure, her for instance, the brother I think. The other remains a bit questionable to me for obvious reasons.

I was just trying to convey for those that could not turn sound on at work how it was. It did not appear to have a clear purpose like the others and they aren't saying anything without a purpose for the most part.

True. I did hear some saying though that you know even that was scripted or approved by the feds so not 100 percent on that.

To me though she seemed, I don't know, resigned, calm somewhat, not teary. I was trying to give it as far as an evidence standpoint for anyone who couldn't watch it, that there wasn't much to pick up on in it that way, no talk of needing contact, paying the kidnappers, things like that.

But yes, it did seem like it might have been just her talking.

Some out there are even dissectign the fact she had makeup on this time, one took that to mean maybe a presser was coming she'd be speaking at smh.

I can't help but think there is some meaning to it though. Gave my best guesses. I mean she would never do anything considered unwise worrying about her mom, so I'm sure she ran it by LE imo, or they helped. That's jmo though.

I heard that said today too if true, that no proof of life was given even in the last note. Supposedly came from the other news station that received the last note. If reporters have that right of course.
