‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

It’s possible the cameras were either damaged, removed, smashed, disabled, etc., they just didn’t confirm it. The language they used was “the doorbell camera disconnects”.

Statement - "We're not confirming that any cameras were smashed or destroyed around the house," Nanos said.

NY Post timeline
5:32 p.m. Saturday — Nancy travels to go to her family's home for a visit, to play games and have dinner

9:48 p.m. — Her garage door opens

9:50 p.m. — It closes -- and cops believe that this is when she returned home and is going to bed

1:47 a.m. Sunday — The doorbell camera disconnects

2:12 a.m. — Software detects a person on camera, but no video available because "it loops"

"We're not done with that -- we'll do all we can," he said, adding that it could have been an animal

2:28 — Her pacemaker disconnects

11:56 a.m. — Family checks on Nancy

12:03 p.m. — 911 call comes in

Ten minutes later, officers arrived.

It loops? Sorry, not sure what that means?

I don't know what looping means either, well we know what it means generally but not sure what they mean in this case.

I'm going by when he was most open, the first night, the sheriff said there were cameras, and not a single mention of them being smashed, damaged, etc. I guess it's still possible they were, or disabled, but I just remember being glad there were cameras, and I took it to mean, functioning cameras. Clearly he doesn't want us (and probably the perp) to know everything about the cameras.

He wasn't in the home with her for very long by this timeline. Say he even enters shortly after a "person" was detected on camera, that's 2:12, and they are leaving when her pacemaker disconnects (most likely) and that's 2:28 so just 16 minutes and one has to consider he still had to enter, so probably even a bit less than that.

That would seem to indicate no robbery or anything and that the entire intent was to get in there and take her.

OK so these are the important times.

5:32 p.m. Saturday — Nancy travels to go to her family's home for a visit, to play games and have dinner

9:48 p.m. — Her garage door opens

9:50 p.m. — It closes -- and cops believe that this is when she returned home and is going to bed

1:47 a.m. Sunday — The doorbell camera disconnects. ( Did she disconnect this herself? )

2:12 a.m. — Software detects a person on camera, but no video available because "it loops"

"We're not done with that -- we'll do all we can," he said, adding that it could have been an animal

2:28 — Her pacemaker disconnects

So these 2 a.m. times could be Nancy herself 2.28 being the Apple watch being taken off so the pacemaker disconnects and the earlier 2.12 a.m could be her too. I have seen pics of her with a dog so did she let the dog out ?

Has the blood outside been determined or ruled out as hers?

These are my only thoughts so far.

The blood outside is hers, he said so, that it's been tested and it is hers.

I don't know why she'd ever shut off these items. I don't think just taking off the watch ends anything re the pacemaker, if she's still in the vicinity of the watch, but it does disconnect when they leave the home.

Good timeline.

If you are using a tape to record the camera they are only 180 mins max. Discs could be similar. Hard disks may be longer. So after a certain number of hours they just record over. She was not discovered missing till Sunday after church so more than 12 hours had passed so it would depend on her recording media capacity as to what would be available to LE.

Mine has a 2t drive. It can record for weeks even if recording 24/7. It looks as if gets might be cloud based though and if she didn't have a subscription, it wouldn't matter how much storage it has because it doesn't save it if you don't have a subscription.

I am just wondering if she let the dog out and fell and had an accident and is still on or around the property somewhere. But with LE having searched, one would think that was thought about. Is her dog still at the property or were those photos some time ago and she no longer has a dog?

The only dog pic I saw was the group Christmas photo and the SIL was holding the dog so it may not be hers.

If there are other photos with a dog, I just haven't seen them, so there may be a dog. Hard to say. I've never seen dates on any of the photos either.

I just don't think she went out on her own. They don't think so either. I'm sure that is probably due to cameras and the blood trail and possibly the watch was still on her recording movements, hard to say. He did say electronic devices are key in this, or something to that effect.

Plus they've searched the property although they still did do another recent search. It is said she couldn't walk far so I seriously doubt she took any long walk. If she fell, she'd also be capable of yelling unless knocked unconscious which I'd say would be fairly rare in a fall. And if that's the case, she still could come to and yell.

I just think there are a lot of reasons, and the main one being they seem sure she did not leave by herself, that's been said from the start, that that is not the case.

I've fallen many times this past year, and some were pretty big uncontrolled falls and not once was I knocked unconscious. One time I DID have to yell.

It's possible I guess, and not disagreeing it COULD be, but I'd be really surprised if that was the case.

This is what I had and you can store and access for free. We did put in the SD card. I'm sure there are likely different models but this sounds about right,

Wyze cameras can be used for free without a subscription, offering live streaming, basic motion/sound alerts with photo thumbnails, and local storage via a microSD card. While cloud video recording requires a paid subscription, users can utilize the free, no-cost version of Cam Plus Lite forperson detection.
Free Features (No Subscription)
  • Live View: Real-time monitoring via the Wyze app.
  • Local Recording: Continuous or event-based recording directly to a user-supplied microSD card (not included).
  • Basic Notifications: Alerts for motion/sound with a still photo thumbnail.
  • No Mandatory Cloud: Full functionality is possible without paying for cloud storage.

Derrick Callella of Los Angeles was arrested on allegations that he sent text messages to members of Nancy Guthrie’s family seeking information about sending bitcoin, authorities said.

Investigators said in the criminal complaint that the messages are not believed to be connected to a separate ransom demand made on February 2 in the case involving Guthrie’s disappearance.

Callella was accused of:

  • intending to transmit a demand for ransom, transmitting in interstate or foreign commerce any communication containing any demand or request for a ransom or reward for the release of any kidnapped person,
  • making a telephone call and utilizing a telecommunications device, whether or not conversation or communication ensues, without disclosing his identity and with intent to abuse, threaten, or harass any specific person

I'm guessing this is the one they said at the presser they had arrested?

Trump was watching news conference, White House says

Donald Trump was watching the Pima County Sheriff's Department's news conference, which White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says delayed her daily briefing.
"(It) is just a heartbreaking situation," she tells reporters.
"The president... spoke directly with Savannah (Guthrie) yesterday and told her that the federal government is here to help. Any requests that are made by state and local officials in the search... will absolutely be accommodated."
Leavitt adds: "Our hearts and our prayers are with Savannah and her entire family".

Police recap: Blood found, no suspects, imposter arrested

The Pima County Sheriff's Department's news conference lasted almost an hour.
Here's what police had to say about the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie:

  • Sheriff Chris Nanos said police believe Nancy Guthrie is "still out there";
  • No suspect has been identified. Nanos later said that "everybody's still a suspect" and "we would be irresponsible if we didn't talk to everybody, the Uber driver, the gardener, the pool person, whoever";
  • Blood on the porch of the 84-year-old's home "came back to Nancy" with several other items being submitted into evidence;
  • The FBI issued a $50k reward for information leading to the recovery of Nancy;
  • Police did not confirm whether there were signs of forced entry into Nancy's home. Police also said there were no cameras smashed or destroyed;
  • The FBI is looking into a "ransom letter" sent to media and "any action" will be decided by the Guthrie family;
  • An imposter was arrested, who police believe was "trying to profit" from the case.

The news conference has ended

Pima County Sheriff's Department's news conference alongside the FBI has ended.
Sheriff Chris Nanos says another news conference will likely not be called until Nancy Guthrie is found.

He sent text messages to family members. Just where did he GET their cell numbers? If he has access to family info, maybe they do need to look at him.

The son was on, again appealing to the kidnapper. On alone this time. If anyone comes across it. I saw it on a show, not sure if it was from Twitter or where. Cameron Guthrie is his name I think, underneath the video was a thing saying follow Samantha Guthrie so maybe her account? Not sure how that works.

No news in it, just telling him they need more info, need a way to contact him, etc.

It's also on Savannah's IG.
