‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

The whole case.
I agree. It's hard to come up with many possible motives, just a few imo, it's highly unusual to abduct an older person, and yeah, just so much more.

I also think with where she lived, she just wouldn't be a known target with regard to Savannah most likely, not known to all or most anyhow.

If someone didn't know that, and where this neighborhood was, I would have to think it's someone close. Maureen, FBI, who Brian Entin talks to a lot said it is highly unusual to take an older woman. And a few other interesting things. There's' just no reason for a stranger to take her, kill her and leave her there maybe, but not take her.

The neighbor (not a close neighbor) got me thinking with the mention of them seeing people who don't belong around their properties that maybe it is someone who did work for her OR like that but still, they took her with so... Doesn't really fit robbery which is probably what the strangers are up to...

Darned if I know. Ransom (someone close or stranger), or someone benefiting from her death but they didn't kill her in the home so....? Burglary, but then wy take her also?

A frustrating one.

In the article there’s a link to Savannah Guthrie’s Instagram account. It appears the siblings are speaking directly to the abductor/s - they’re ready to talk, they asked for proof of life.

Savannah Guthrie and her siblings, Annie and Camron, are begging for their mother Nancy’s safe return after her mysterious disappearance.
“Bring her home,” the journalist captioned an Instagram video shared on Wednesday night.
“We want to thank all of you for the prayers for our beloved mom, Nancy. We feel them and we continue to believe that she feels them too,” an emotional Savannah said in the clip, reading from a prepared statement.
“Our mom is a kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light. She’s funny, spunky, and clever. She has grandchildren that adore her and crowd around her, and cuddle her with kisses,” the siblings’ message continued.

“She loves fun and adventure. She is a devoted friend. She is full of kindness and knowledge. Talk to her, and you’ll see.”
Annie echoed her sister’s sentiments, adding that the “light is missing” from their family’s lives without their mother.
“Nancy is our mother. We are her children, she is our beacon. She holds fast to joy in all of life’s circumstances. She chooses joy day after day. Despite having already passed through great trials of pain and grief,” she said, as Savannah tearfully held her head down.
“We are always going to be merely human. Just normal human people who need our mom. Mama, mama if you’re listening, We need you to come home. We miss you.”

Savannah continued to read from her note as she pleaded with her mother’s alleged captor for proof that she is alive.
“Our mom is our heart, and our home. She is 84 years old. Her health, her heart is fragile. She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive, she needs it not to suffer. We, too, have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media. As a family we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk,” Savannah said.
Addressing the purported kidnapper, she added: “However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know — without a doubt — that she is alive, and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen.”
The former “Today” show host then sent a message directly to Nancy, asking her to “please reach out” to their family.

“Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. You are God’s precious daughter, Nancy. We believe and know that even in this valley, he is with you,” she said.
“Everyone is looking for you, Mommy — everywhere. We will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again. We speak to you every moment and we pray without ceasing. And we will rejoice in advance that the day we will hold you in our arms again. We love you, mom,” Savannah closed before her siblings echoed her last sentence in their closing statements.
Nancy was last seen on Saturday at around 9:30 p.m. She was reportedly dropped off at her Catalina Foothills home after having dinner with family members.
On Monday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Nancy’s home was being treated as a crime scene.

Kind of odd remark or two at the end there. Why would they think Annie was the last to see her if he was? One would think it would be both if at dinner, and whoever drove her home if later. Did they avoid saying he was last (to the authorities)? Also why would a search of the home be based on thinking it was her, they'd search it if they thought it was either of them most likely. Funny way of putting things. Could have been the media writer who worded things that way I guess. Still, all a bit odd they didn't know who was last right out of the gate as it's an important detail as to when she got home, who with, etc.

6:55 AM PT -- No suspects have been identified in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday morning.
The department tells TMZ ... "We have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case. Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie. We are also awaiting additional forensic results."
They add, "We are not confirming the car being seized, we are unsure where that reporter is getting that information."
There's a potentially stunning twist in the kidnapping of 'TODAY' anchor Savannah Guthrie's mother Nancy ... an Ashleigh Banfield report claiming her son-in-law might be a suspect.

Banfield -- an independent journalist and former NewsNation host -- reported Tuesday night, a law enforcement source told her Tommaso Cioni has been identified by police as a possible suspect in the case.

Cioni is married to Savannah's sister Annie, and we know she was the last person to see Nancy on Saturday night when they reportedly had dinner together. It's unclear if Cioni was also at the dinner.
As you know, Nancy's family called police Sunday after they got word she didn't show up to her regular Sunday church service.

Now, Banfield reports investigators have towed Annie's car, which has "some connection" to 50-year-old Cioni. Banfield adds that all the cameras at Nancy's Tucson, Arizona home were smashed.
Tuesday, NewsNation published a video showing a trail of blood outside the front steps of Nancy's house. The Los Angeles Times reported Nancy's blood was found at the crime scene.

We reached out to Cioni for comment ... so far no word back. We also reached out to the Pima County Sheriff's Department ... a rep wouldn't confirm Banfield's report.

I don't tend to believe the ransom note/s either. I think Savannah's family is just playing it safe, not totally discounting them, plus it may tell who really has her that they will want proof of life, that she is loved, to treat her well, etc.

Just the fact the note went to TMZ makes it highly questionable to me.

I don't know why LE would even talk to them, however, they told them nothing basically.

It's not an outright denial on the car when they did outright deny suspects.

The destruction of the cameras and the blood outside the property is what i don't understand. How did the perp know that the cameras did not record to a back up location? Presumably they didn't or they would have video up to the cameras suddenly not working. But they seem to have no video at all. Or they havent shown it - for example, video of her coming home.

An Arizona news anchor who saw the possible Nancy Guthrie ransom note sent to her station revealed that it came via email — and it was “clear after a couple of sentences” that it “might not be a hoax.”

“A lot of it is information that only someone who was holding her for ransom would know,” Mary Coleman, anchor for Arizona-based CNN affiliate KOLD 13 News, told CNN Wednesday.

“Some very sensitive information and things that people who weren’t there when she was taken captive wouldn’t know,” she added.

“It also included a dollar amount, a deadline, and, again, other specifics that only Guthrie’s abductor might know, so that definitely raised some red flags,” Coleman said, adding that it was clear immediately that it might not be a sick prank.

Was the item taken from her home in an evidence bag?
Yeah. From upthread post 170.

"Law enforcement officials, including FBI agents and local sheriffs, were seen leaving Annie’s home with evidence bags. Officials didn’t comment on what they found, but Banfield quoted an unidentified police source who said two surveillance cameras were..."

I was thinking, I'm not going to name him as he has not been named a suspect, if the person who drove her home is the one who did this, and she was dropped off at 9:45, why he'd wait until closer to 2 a.m. to do something to her?? I doubt he was in the home with her for 4 hours talking or skulking around in the dark. I guess he could have been outside dismantling cameras although that TOO has not been confirmed about the cameras.

However, is there PROOF of when she was dropped off? That time could be a lie but we don't even know they suspect him, however, it's possible they do.

I guess he could have wanted to not be recognized and go in late and surprise her.

It just seems odd if he had her in the car, he had opportunity then, if he dropped her at the home, he had opportunity then. Why the 4 hour gap IF it even is him?

Thank you - that was on Tuesday.
