‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

How did they get in I wonder... Maybe they saw forced entry signs... I know my mom always locks up when she leaves, checks every door and she's got several doors. I'm sure this woman would be the same.

So did they force entry and were there when she got home or enter while she was sleeping?

Maybe with luck, the person can't bring themselves to kill so they took her with.... But then what are they going to do with her...?

It could be ransom but that's so unheard of these days, not often anyhow. They always get caught I think is one reason... I don't think just because she's Savannah's daughter that that is any more likely than anyone else. She probably has a pretty good contract at Today but I don't think they are anywhere near the richest people in the world. But I don't know and who knows...

I'd say the most common thing when one hears of an elderly person or couple taken is they are forcing them to get them cash out with their bank cards...

Yeah but no threat to public so an inside job maybe?
Could be... Could be friend, family, neighbor or they know a motive maybe. They often hint no threat to keep panic down but they usually won't say it quite outright if not sure. It would seem to indicate it was targeted no?

I did also wonder if she came home and disturbed a burglar in the house after she had been dropped off, and they attacked her and abducted her?
Yeah I think I mentioned that too. It's one of the few possibilities people are thinking of...

They could have also been lying in wait just for her but why?

I gather it is a nice area, I saw the street names she lives near but don't know where. Could google earth/map the area, see the homes... If I find them again. I still have to finish that video lol.

Have you got a link for it being a crime scene, (apart from the Sun that I posted) being taken whilst sleeping and the things moved that she wouldn't be able to move herself?
Your very own link states it. It even has the words "CRIME SCENE" in capitol letters.

Thanks. In post number 2 it says the following:-

Police do not believe there is a threat to the public, Nanos said.

“Everybody just wants to be able to know that they can go outside and enjoy their community and come home and be safe at night in their rooms, asleep in bed, and this lady wasn’t able to accomplish that,” Nanos said Monday. “We need her back. We need to find her, and time is very critical.”

So no threat to the public BUT she wasn't able to be safe in her home, asleep in her bed.

So.......
Just saw this, going back to see if I missed any. Easy to do when we are posting a lot simultaneously.

I see he does say time is critical, I thought he had been saying that.

I'm a bit surprised at the response to this. I mean someone said there were like 100 just local police vehicles there. I'm not sure others would have had such a response. I see it getting bigger of course once they realize a crime scene but that's still a lot.

When articles all say "evidence of a crime" that, by itself, means crime scene. If there is evidence of a crime, then it IS a crime scene.

Looks like a big property. Click watch on youtube to view video.

Hmm. Fair sized property, distance between neighbors, a bit, hard to see with brush/trees. Fairly secluded and set back. How would anyone know or target her? I mean it's nice but it's not like it's a mansion and screams money. I guess if some random burglar just wanted to strike a home, it would do as well as any but that's taking a chance, again, did someone know she wasn't home...? Or knew she was home on the other hand, depending on the reason for being there...

Sounds to me like her bedroom tells the tale. Was it tossed and bloody? It also sounds like things were moved that they believe she wouldn't have been able to move herself with her physical limitations.
Where does that come from? You mean big heavy things? Why would anyone do that?

I guess he could have taken her dead or alive...

He said they have DNA, I sure hope it's from a door knob or something and not some other reason for it...

I'm not sure they know she was awakened but I guess they could guess at it if the bed was unmade, she got home late, if her habit was to go right to bed. DO they know that for sure? They give a wide window as a time frame, basically from the time she was dropped off to when she didn't show up at church. Well he's pretty much told the perp they have his DNA, not sure if that would make it more dangerous for the woman if still alive or not... It's unlikely at this point they want to chance being seen with her so where did they take her?

I can't help but think they are talking blood in the home, of hers but then again why take her with them...

I'm not so sure it relates to her daughter's job. I mean I guess it's possible if her mom talked about the fact she was her daughter but most people wouldn't know, I mean I wouldn't have had I run into her mom where she lives.

I saw something about her being taken while she slept or awakened or something, not sure how true that is. It was popping up all day today everywhere and tonight but since I was waiting for a Banfield verdict, I didn't watch much on it. Nate covered it somewhat tonight but most of his show was about Banfield too.

I saw headlines a lot, just never really watched a show, however, I did read the initial reports and watch the police chief and all that earlier.

I think it's easy to assume or wonder if it relates to the daughter but yeah, would they be chancing things if a ransom demand was coming or expected? Nate did say she lived in a very nice area...

People just don't kidnap 80 some year old people. Pretty unusual. Unless for their debit cards and taking them to an ATM, getting their PINs, etc. OR they witnesssed something.

It COULD relate to Savannah but I don't think it's a definite by any means. She sounds in relatively good health and of good mind they make sure is known.

I wish someone would focus on what possibly in her life or area that this could relate to, there's an immediate jump it seems to me because of who her daughter is which of course, could relate but again who would know her mom lived there?

My mom in the next few months is going to be 82 so man it's easy to relate as I'm sure you can too. My mom could probably run circles around me and will likely outlive me too. I get the impression this lady may be similar although they do say she has some health issues. Maybe I'll watch some things on it tomorrow but I'm guessing not much more is known and most shows would probably cover just what is known.
At the time that I wrote that, I was thinking about the fact that Nancy lives in a $1 million house. Doesn’t mean they necessarily know who she’s related to. I was thinking more about the property and money greed.

Interesting they know she was forced out of her home but can't say if she was carried or walked but was forced. I don't see how they'd know one thing but not the other. My only thought is maybe signs of a struggle or blood and so from there it's assumed she was forced out.

I'm just starting to listen to the rest of the one I was watching last night...

I wasn't saying you did think that was just saying I'm not so sure based more on some people wonder that. In fact, you didn't say you thought it was kidnapping. Others have though. Not here. Out there in the big yonder wild.
