Sioux Falls police are asking for the public’s help in searching for a missing endangered child.

Joel Takenalive is a 10-year-old Native American male.

He is 4’ 6” tall and weighs 85 pounds.

Takenalive was last seen in the 700 block of South Regal Place around 1:10 am on January 22. He was wearing an orange sweater and red/white shoes.

Joel is endangered due to his age and the extreme temperatures.

Police have been going door-to-door and searching the area where Takenalive was last seen.

South Dakota authorities have asked for the public’s help in locating a 10-year-old boy who vanished on Thursday.

The Argus Leader reported that Sioux Falls authorities have classified Joel Takenalive as an endangered runaway. Police Captain Jason Leach said they have interviewed the missing boy’s parents, but have exhausted all of their leads.

Takenalive is considered endangered due to his age and because of freezing temperatures in the area at the time of his disappearance.

Sioux Falls Police bring in K9 to help with 'endangered' missing child case​

Update as of 7:15 p.m. Jan. 22: Sioux Falls Police are urging residents to stay away from the search area related to the disappearance of Joel Takenalive.

"We are working diligently on locating Joel," a statement read on the department's Facebook page, nearly 18 hours after police were first alerted to the child's absence. "While we greatly appreciate our community's willingness to help with the search, we are planning a search with a dog that will require people stay out of the area. Unnecessary disturbance to the search area may hamper our efforts."

Step-mother continues search for missing Sioux Falls boy with traumatic past​

The step-mother of a missing Sioux Falls boy continues searching as police work to locate the child who left home wearing only a sweater.

Joel Taken Alive moved into his father’s home in 2023. His step-mother, Angela Chasing Hawk, said she had frequent meetings with DSS social workers to help him settle in after a traumatic past.

“He just took off in a sweater. And it’s just he doesn’t understand that how dangerous that is,” Chasing Hawk said.

Before moving in with his father, Joel was raised by a relative who died. His mother then took him in before she also died, Chasing Hawk said. Joel was later moved to another relative and removed due to safety issues.

“He started contacting the agency and doing all we can and we got him into our placed into our home,” Chasing Hawk said of her husband learning about his son’s need for a home.

Despite his difficult past, Chasing Hawk said Joel brought joy to their family.

“Smiling, he always has a good story. Drawing or coloring or reading books,” she said.

Chasing Hawk expressed concern about Joel’s trusting nature, which she said could put him in dangerous situations.

“Can be too trusting of situations. ‘I’ll just do it.’ He’s like, ‘I see a car door open, I’m gonna open it, I’m gonna do it.’ And so he does it,” she said.

While she praised the school and law enforcement response, Chasing Hawk said she has been frustrated trying to get Joel the mental health help he needs.

“I talked with his social workers several times about the things I’ve noticed as a mom that I know weren’t right,” she said. “If we didn’t get ahead of it, that you know he’s going to have a hard time.”

She said mental health providers told her Joel’s situation wasn’t severe enough for intervention because he hadn’t committed a crime or hurt himself or others.

“Oh well, it’s not bad enough yet, so we’ll just let it go on and see how bad it gets until it’s too late,” she said.

Chasing Hawk said Joel is very slender with long hair and could be mistaken for a girl. He was wearing a bright orange sweater when he left.

She said Joel has hidden from police before and hopes others will continue looking for him.

“Really, really hurt him. We just really wish he would come home so we could help him. He’s always got a good spirit with him,” she said.

According to Sioux Falls police, an Amber Alert was not issued because Joel appears to have left on his own. An Amber Alert is issued when there’s a likelihood of abduction. Law enforcement issued an Endangered Missing Advisory instead.
 
I hope he's stayed in the City as he might be able to find someplace warm, but hard to say. Classifying him as a runaway at age 10 seemed odd at first but in reading what he's been through with hints of other issues and they think he left on his own, I guess he is one.

He left at 1:10 a.m. this morning?? It was cold here last night too and likely was there as well, not as cold as tonight is to get though and upcoming nights...

So they must know what he is wearing as it is missing? One would think he'd have to get dressed to leave at 1:10 a.m... Or maybe a camera shows him at that address and in those clothes...

I noticed the 1:10 a.m. being noted. Especially since it's a weekday. Even on a weekend a child should be in bed at that time. Are his guardians using that as part of a lie?. Seems foolish to do that. It catches people's attention.
