Portugal MADELEINE McCANN: Missing from Praia da Luz, Portugal - 3 May 2007 - Age 3 (3 Viewers)

Madeleine Beth McCann (born 12 May 2003) disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment at a resort in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve region of Portugal. Her whereabouts remain unknown.[3] The Daily Telegraph described the disappearance as "the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history".[4]

Madeleine was on holiday from the UK with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann; her two-year-old twin siblings; and a group of family friends and their children. She and the twins had been left asleep at 20:30 in the ground-floor apartment, while the McCanns and friends dined in a restaurant 55 metres (180 ft) away.[5] The parents checked on the children throughout the evening, until Madeleine's mother discovered she was missing at 22:00.

'Blindingly obvious' alleged stalker's DNA does not match Madeleine McCann's, court hears

Mr Duck KC asked why Miss Wandelt continued to knock on the McCanns' door when they went inside their home.

Miss Wandelt said she wanted Mrs McCann to have her DNA report.

The prosecutor said: "The one thing that’s blindingly obvious is that your profile and Madeleine McCann’s did not match."

In response, Miss Wandelt questioned if the profile was Madeleine’s, as it was “from three people".

Mr Duck KC asked: "Do you accept that by simply looking at the profile, it has nothing to do with you?"

Miss Wandelt replied: "Assuming this does belong to Madeleine, yes."

Mr Duck KC said: "Assuming Madeleine’s DNA profile to be hers, we know yours is yours. They are miles away from matching up."

In response, Miss Wandelt said: "Yes."
It's getting really hard to have even an ounce of sympathy for this lady.

I also can't understand how she can't comprehend that she would be shown 3 tests and not/refuse to understand that they most likely came from the parents of Maddie and Maddie and she is related to none of them.

Why would Madeleine's DNA be from three people? Not sure I follow that. Maybe the defense will elaborate if they do a re-exam.
Not maddie's dna from 3 people. They tested this lady's dna against 3 people's dna - presumably Maddie, her mom and her dad's dna. Seems easy enough to show her that she is not only not Maddie, but not even related to any of them.

McCann DNA evidence 'exaggerated'

The McCanns holiday apartment

Police images show the Algarve room after Madeleine disappeared

The parents of Madeleine McCann have accused police in Portugal of exaggerating DNA evidence before naming them suspects in her disappearance.
A UK forensic scientist had already warned DNA in their hire car was "inconclusive", it has been revealed.
His e-mail was in thousands of pages of evidence now been made public.
Madeleine vanished, aged three, on a holiday in the Algarve on 3 May 2007. Kate and Gerry McCann are no longer suspects in the case.
Lack of evidence
The papers, which also include photographs of the family's deserted apartment, make clear that the McCanns came under suspicion following a visit to Portugal by UK detectives last August.
Portuguese police cited DNA evidence as grounds for their suspicions.
Kate and Gerry McCann's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said police had told Mr McCann during interrogation that his missing daughter's DNA had been found in the boot of the car - hired 24 days after her disappearance.

The McCann's spokesman Clarence Mitchell says that the files will be investigated privately

The investigation papers show a sniffer dog detected the apparent odour of a body in their hire car and apartment, but tests on a sample from the car were inconclusive.
British forensic scientist John Lowe said the sample contained 15 out of 19 components of Madeleine's DNA which were not "unique to her".
Mr Mitchell told the BBC: "I can confirm in his interview the police put to Gerry as a matter of fact that DNA - Madeleine's DNA - had been found in the vehicle.
"You can see from the official report that wasn't the case. It was inconclusive at best.
"You have to ask yourself what the police were trying to achieve by overstating evidence they simply didn't have in that way to Gerry."
The police inquiry into her disappearance was wound up last month due to a lack of evidence.
The McCanns and a third British national, Robert Murat, were declared to be no longer formal suspects when the police closed the case. The McCanns and Mr Murat, 34, always strongly denied having had any involvement in what happened to Madeleine.

Lawyers for the McCanns, both 40, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were given access to the documents last week.
They are studying the papers for fresh leads that the couple's private detectives could follow up.
Mr Mitchell said: "One of the great frustrations for Kate and Gerry, through all this, was that they just didn't get any information from the Portuguese of any real note at all.
"Now there is a chance to analyse this, and if there's anything that needs priority action in terms of finding Madeleine.
"Such as was this area searched or not? Was there another sighting in a certain place, or not?
"All of that will be moved on quickly. But Kate and Gerry themselves are not fully aware of the mass of detail yet, they're waiting for the lawyers to tell them in due course."
Police questions
Some 20,000 pages of evidence were released on Monday to journalists who had made a formal request to prosecutors, including the BBC.
The sniffer dog's apparent detection of the odour of a body was followed by a second dog detecting what was thought to be blood in the same locations.
The BBC's Steve Kingstone said the documents showed an initial report from Britain's forensic science service saying the samples indicated some compatibility with the components of Madeleine's DNA.
However the laboratory did not draw firm conclusions and stressed that the samples contained the DNA of more than one person.
In an e-mail dated 3 September 2007, John Lowe of the major incidents team of the Forensic Science Service (FSS) said it was impossible to conclude whether the material taken from the car came from Madeleine.
Gerry and Kate McCann

The McCanns want to follow any leads that come from the police documents

The e-mail was translated into Portuguese the following day and four days later Portuguese detectives named the McCanns arguidos - formal suspects - citing DNA evidence as grounds for their suspicions.
In his message to Det Supt Stuart Prior, head of the British side of the inquiry, Mr Lowe said a sample from the boot of the McCanns' hire car, which they rented 24 days after Madeleine went missing, contained 15 out of 19 of her DNA components.
But he cautioned that this result - based on the controversial "low copy number" DNA analysis technique which uses very small samples - was "too complex for meaningful interpretation or inclusion".
The expert said the components of the missing girl's DNA profile were not unique to her - in fact some were present among FSS scientists, including himself.
"We cannot answer the question: is the match genuine, or is it a chance match," he wrote.
Subsequent interview transcripts reveal that Kate McCann was asked directly: "Did you have anything to do with the disappearance of your daughter?"
She refused to answer this and dozens of other questions, as was her legal right.

So from post above this stands out to me.

NOTE: Below is what a query on the net states.

A match of 15 out of 19 "components" on a DNA test does not refer to a standard AncestryDNA test, which measures relationships by centimorgans (cM). Instead, this is a result from a specific type of legal-purpose DNA testing, like paternity or siblingship, that compares specific genetic markers.

What stands out? That Portuguese detectives had absolutely no clue what the dna meant or that Kate knew her rights on what she had to answer or not?

If you check my post again i have added to it as i had not finished reviewing and posting all the info.

A match of 15 out of 19 would mean a paternity or sibling relationship for example.

Except it doesn't...

So, to me, it seems there is doubt over Madeleine's alleged DNA. What are they therefore using to rule out all the people that have come forward in the last 18 years, including JW?

If her DNA is indistinguable from a sibling or a parent, with the 15 out of 19 meaning a connection and there are also some doubts within that too, i cannot see them ever getting a match.

Comparing DNA of an individual claiming to be Madeline is a lot different than trying to solve a crime from the crime scene. They can simply use the parents' DNA and/or Madeline's from an item in their home.

On another note, it sounds like the Portuguese officials are the ones who have made the whole DNA thing so confusing to us all in this case with regard to the crime.

I think she's just using the confusion they created by their ignorance to her advantage. She's been told repeatedly her DNA is not a match by multiple sources. It's time for her to be found guilty of stalking and just go away.

I can't disagree on that. In reading through the accounts of court, that is exactly how it seems.

Wanna bet she still doubles down after this?
Can't disagree with that either. From reading all of her responses, I fully expect her to continue it yet again when this is over. For that reason, I think they need to give her the consequence of some jail time as I don't think anything else will get her to stop...

I'm not sure anything will make her stop.

Court resumes today.

Two women's alleged stalking of the McCanns was "cruel and unforgiving" and showed no sign of stopping, prosecutors told a trial.
Michael Duck KC said evidence showed Polish national Julia Wandelt, who has claimed to be missing Madeleine McCann since 2022, was "capable of being incredibly manipulative".
Addressing the jury at Leicester Crown Court, he said Karen Spragg, 61, who helped arrange a doorstep confrontation at the McCanns' home to ask for a DNA test, was "no sidekick" and been a "willing participant" with a "preconceived notion" of the unsolved disappearance in Portugal in 2007.

Both deny stalking Gerry and Kate McCann causing serious alarm and distress over two-and-a-half years.
A letter Mr Duck said was "co-authored" by the two defendants, signed by Miss Wandelt as Madeleine and hand delivered to the McCanns' address in December 2024, a day after they were told to stop trying to contact them, showed the pair's "torment" of the family "was not going to stop".

He said any suggestion having a DNA test carried out would have ceased their stalking was "a nonsense".Mr Duck pointed to Miss Wandelt's refusal to accept "the game was finally up" when told about the DNA result in April this year.

When he suggested Miss Wandelt's supposed childhood memories as Madeleine McCann were "a manifestation" and details came from the McCann's home videos which were published online, Miss Wandelt became emotional and left the dock in tears.
He also highlighted a shift from signing messages as Madeleine and calling Mrs McCann "mommy" to Mrs Spragg messaging Mrs McCann to say Miss Wandelt only "believes she may be" the missing girl.

He said: "These two operated together, and had an ability and a willingness to manipulate.
"It's absolutely plain there never was and never could be evidence that supported their belief based on nothing other than her own assertions.
"Julia Wandelt is not Madeleine McCann, and the only people who are not prepared to accept that are the two sat in the dock."Addressing the jury, judge Mrs Justice Cutts KC said that anyone with opinions on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007 should "put them to one side" and solely consider evidence heard during the trial.

She added both defendants are of previous good character, with just one prior caution on Mrs Spragg's record from 2006 for slapping a neighbour on the back of their head during an argument.

'A genuine person'

The best friend of Karen Spragg told the trial the 61-year-old was "sincere, reliable and most definitely honest".
A character reference from care worker Susan Aherne, Karen Spragg's friend of 40 years, was read to the court telling of a "genuine person" who would "listen wholeheartedly and give support".
Julia Wandelt, 24, of Jana Kochanowskiego in Lubin, Poland, and Karen Spragg, 61, of Caerau Court Road, Cardiff, deny stalking the McCanns causing distress and alarm between June 2022 to February 2025.
The trial continues.

The alleged stalking campaign of a woman who believes she is missing Madeleine McCann had little real impact on the day-to-day lives of Gerry and Kate McCann, her defence team has argued.
Addressing the trial at Leicester Crown Court, Tom Price KC, representing Polish national Julia Wandelt, said his client only approached the McCanns as a last resort.
He said: "It's a tragedy of this case that the McCanns have had to live with interference in their lives since 2007, but when you examine what impact her actions have had you will see it wasn't that much."
Both Miss Wandelt and co-accused Karen Spragg deny stalking Gerry and Kate McCann.
Mr Price said the first contact made by his client to Glenfield Hospital and Operation Grange in June 2022 did not affect the McCanns, and was made with a genuine hope to answer "complex questions about her background".
He said Miss Wandelt had contacted 23 different organisations including in the UK, Poland, and Portugal including police and Interpol, missing persons charities and the Find Madeleine website.
He said: "When she contacted the McCanns, she had tried everyone else. This is a woman at the end of her tether."

He argued the Metropolitan Police's Operation Grange did not treat her approach seriously, with his client ruled out within 24 hours of contacting them.
"She just wants the certainty of a DNA test, it could have been done, it was not done," he said.
There was no concern relayed to police by the McCanns when they became aware of Miss Wandelt's claims through a routine operational meeting, Mr Price said.
After messaging became direct, Mr Price said there was never "malevolence" and that all the numbers she contacted were publicly available after being leaked in the Portuguese police files.
He said: "We never see, do we, any threats of violence, there's no swearing, nothing of that type.
"This is not wicked. This is the confused behaviour of a rather sad and pathetic young woman."

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007 has never been solved

When she visited the public vigil for Madeleine McCann in May 2024, she was "polite" he said, and the following day she visited a police station, "not the behaviour of a woman who's done something wrong".

When Kate McCann raised the matter with police after her visit to Rothley, it was two years on, Mr Price said, while police had also taken no formal action.
Before the visit to the McCann's home in December 2024, the victims were "just getting on with things" he said.
He argued that when confronting the McCanns at their family home alongside co-defendant Karen Spragg, his client "didn't shout, didn't swear" and when Mrs Spragg raised her voice "she said don't speak to her like that".

He added that "half an hour later" the victims had "waited for them to clear off" and were "in a car going to a party".
Mr Price said: "It doesn't sound as though it is something that is disrupting their lifestyle."
He said Miss Wandelt's actions had not been for any personal gain, other than to find out her identity.
"She's somebody who's absolutely ripe to be taken advantage of. And what has she got out of it? All she's got out of it is a period in custody and a restraining order," Mr Price said.

'The lost Madeleine'

Karen Spragg's solicitor Simon Russell Flint KC said his client's "sole purpose once she became involved was to find out whether Julia Wandelt might be the missing Madeleine McCann, the abducted Madeleine McCann, the lost Madeleine McCann".

After reaching out following Miss Wandelt's appearance on a YouTube broadcast in September 2024, she "supported" and "believed" Miss Wandelt and wanted to know the truth of her claims - but did not "encourage", said Mr Russell Flint.

He said: "If you ask how a child can disappear, seemingly into thin air, are you then a conspiracy theorist?"

He said Mrs Spragg's "purpose was not to cause upset to the McCanns" and when she became involved in 2024, there was no DNA evidence to disprove her theory.
Mr Russell Flint said: "It was not until after Julia Wandelt's arrest, nearly three years after she had first asked and months and months after others started asking, police finally did what they had been asked.

"Before that nobody could have stood up and said with complete certainty and said Julia Wandelt is not Madeleine McCann, and that's a real irony of this case.
"It's the very test that Julia Wandelt, Karen Spragg and others had been begging to be carried out."

Mr Russell Flint said it was "obvious" that his client posed no risk to the McCanns, as she was only arrested when Miss Wandelt flew back into to the UK in February.

Julia Wandelt, 24, of Jana Kochanowskiego in Lubin, Poland, and Karen Spragg, 61, of Caerau Court Road, Cardiff, deny stalking the McCanns causing serious alarm and distress between June 2022 to February 2025.

The trial continues.

So the previous post sums the facts up well.

Julia went to the vigil, which was a public event so that cannot be stalking. Karen had not even contacted Julia at that point.

In Dec '24, the two met and visited the McCann's house. After half an hour the McCanns left to attend a function.

In February '25, when Julia returned to the UK, she was arrested and imprisoned. So there were no further incidents.

This doesn't seem to amount to stalking IMO but as she has already been in prison for 10 months, I think whatever the verdict, she will be released.
I think Karen may be found not guilty.

I therefore don't think there will be any jail time.

Waste of the court's time IMO.
