Alberta RCMP members are continuing to search for a five-year-old boy who went missing in the Crowsnest Pass area over the weekend.

Darius Macdougall was reported missing on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

He was last seen walking with his family about four kilometres south of Crowsnest Pass near Island Lake Campground – about 150 kilometres west of Lethbridge.

Officials say Macdougall was camping in the area with his family.

He went for a walk with six of his siblings a short distance from their campsite but became separated from the group.

“Darius was not among the ones that returned,” said Sgt. Mark Amatto, detachment commander of Crowsnest Pass RCMP, in a Monday news conference. “They went back to the site, searched for a good time before calling 911 and search and rescue was deployed immediately.”

In a post on social media, they are also sharing new photos of Darius Macdougall, taken the weekend he went missing, as well as information showing the area where they say he was last seen, located about four kilometres south of the Crowsnest Pass in southwestern Alberta.

On Wednesday, after 10 days of searching by nearly 400 search and rescue volunteers from Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, who found no sign of the missing boy, the search was officially called off and the area was reopened to the public.

The family says when Darius went missing, he was wearing a blue and grey sweater, a Christmas shirt, sweatpants , Paw Patrol shoes and his hair was cut short.

They are asking people to share the photos throughout Canada.

They are also asking anyone who is travelling in the area where he disappeared to keep an eye out for evidence of the missing boy, and if they find clues or evidence, to not touch it, but instead call the Crowsnest RCMP at 403-562-2866.

“We will not stop until we get answers,” says the family.


RCMP said that while the ground search has ended, the investigation into the boy’s disappearance continues. While there is no evidence of foul play, RCMP said “all information and tips will be carefully evaluated and thoroughly investigated.”

However, RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said they are concerned about people going into the area to do their own search because the terrain is so rugged.

It was described by searchers as heavily forested, with steep alpine areas and numerous rivers, lakes, bogs and other waterways.

Kya was remembered by her family as a bright and loving child who will be “deeply missed and forever remembered with love.”

Family members — Buffy, Jody, Abbey and others — expressed heartfelt gratitude for the community’s outpouring of support during what they described as an “extremely challenging time.”
 
What?? So two children on that walk are now dead (assuming he is). I'm not saying it means anything, just stating a fact.

How utterly tragic.
 
It doesn't mention stepsiblings. I wonder if the two children lived under one roof or she lived elsewhere with her mother or father and was on visitation. Both were on the walk.

Not that it matters I guess.

I understood your post. It just shocked me that they mention it in an article, but he's not even mentioned in the obit, like the families aren't very close but they were all camping together. Just struck me as odd.
 
I think maybe a dad had his kids for the weekend (or a mom). The main family of Kya (for instance her mother if dad had visitation at that time) wouldn't necessarily be close to them if it is a divorce situation. It would be unusual in fact.
 
Here's her obit from the funeral directors with a little more info. She died in a children's hospital in the early morning so maybe she had been ill. There is a picture too.

The family of six-year-old Darius Macdougall, who went missing while camping in southern Alberta, has spoken publicly for the first time since his disappearance. Their statement, posted Tuesday to the “Bring Darius Macdougall Home” Facebook page, offers both new details about the day Darius vanished and news of another devastating loss within the family.
Darius disappeared on September 21 while camping with relatives in the Livingstone Public Land Use Zone. The family said they had arrived two days earlier with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins to celebrate several birthdays. Darius was there with his father, his father’s girlfriend, and her daughter, Kya. His mother did not attend the trip.


According to the statement, the family was packing up to leave when Darius went missing. “The kids were playing on the island adjacent the camp, just across a creek where the adults could see them,” reads the post. “Darius, Kya, and a cousin were walking and playing together when Darius was suddenly gone.”
The children immediately alerted adults, and Darius’s grandmother called 911. Search-and-rescue crews arrived within twenty minutes. Over the following 11 days, hundreds of volunteers from Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan joined the search, but Darius was never found, and the formal operation was eventually called off.
Tragically, the family also confirmed that Kya passed away in a separate, unrelated event. RCMP said officers responded to a medical emergency and confirmed that the incident was not criminal. An obituary revealed that the six-year-old girl died on October 10 at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.
“This was an unexpected, horrible tragedy for a family already feeling broken from Darius’s disappearance,” the family’s statement said. They extended heartfelt thanks to the staff at Pincher Creek, STARS Air Ambulance, and Alberta Children’s Hospital for their care and compassion.

The pic of them together, she is quite a bit smaller than him but she is older. I did notice that and wonder.
 
So a little more info. Kya's 6th birthday was Sept 13th and was celebrated in that holiday. Darius went missing on the day they were packing up to leave on the 21st.

From much experience with camping with kids, sending them out to play out of the way is more common than not. ALL the kids I've been camping with would all have been in that creek out of the way of the ruckus of packing up with no little ones underfoot. It only takes one time of them being right there while packing up and not seeing them with your hands full and accidents happen to learn that. Same with setting up for the same reasons.
