The Nevaeh Allen case: How a fatal blow, coverup led to the 2-year-old's death, police say

When the 3-year-old girl told relatives that her 2-year-old sister Nevaeh Allen was “in the forest,” no one knew what to make of it.

Days later, law enforcement revealed their narrative about Nevaeh’s disappearance, and it became clear what the girl meant.

Despite the coroner’s initial findings, East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore III cautioned that final autopsy results can take weeks, adding that details known about the case may change as police continue their investigation.

“There are a lot of other pieces of potential evidence still out there,” Moore said. “We still have a long way to go.”
A 3 year old knew this about her 2 year old sister???!!!! What is WRONG with people! %$#&#&%$

Out of the mouths of babes. She told relatives. At that young age she knew it was significant or odd... Imo. Seeing RED...

Nevaeh Allen’s family launches foundation to help families, honor kids that die due to child abuse

The family of Neveah Allen is honoring the toddler’s legacy in a special way.

Marcus Allen, Nevaeh’s father, and Ebony Hunt, a family friend, launched a new foundation called “Heaven Has a Playground”.

The purpose is to help families in the Baton Rouge area who have lost a child due to neglect and abuse.

“The foundation is just something to live on forever so people can know her name and her story,” Hunt said.

The name of the foundation was chosen since Nevaeh is “heaven” spelled backward.

Hunt says the plan is to do giveaways, hold programs and financially support these families, but the goal is to eventually expand and help anyone who may have lost a child.

Good. Let the wheels of justice, no matter how rusty and imperfect they may be at times, start to roll.

RIP Nevaeh. Your name has something in common with my granddaughter's. She is where you are. A far better place even if it wasn't supposed to be now.

Trial underway in Nevaeh Allen murder case

The trial is officially underway for Phillip Gardner, the man accused of murder in the 2021 Nevaeh Allen case.

In court on Monday, the jury selection process began. As expected, the judge and both attorneys stressed to the jury the intensity of this case and how emotional it is going to be.

This all happened in 2021, when both Gardner and his girlfriend, Lanaya Cardwell, were arrested. Shortly after the child’s death, the couple spoke to WAFB, claiming the toddler had gone missing,

Detectives say the child was stuffed into a suitcase, and her body was later found in the woods in Mississippi. A list of evidence that will be presented during the trial shows that Gardner and Cardwell had been writing letters to each other while incarcerated.

Meanwhile, in court, Gardner’s defense was asking potential jurors about discipline and what crosses the line when it comes to discipline.

The state outlined the charges against Gardner, saying that if he is found guilty, it is a mandatory life sentence.

At Baton Rouge trial over Nevaeh Allen death: Lawyer says man obstructed police but didn't kill child

The lawyer for a man accused of second-degree murder and obstruction of evidence after a toddler's death told a Baton Rouge jury Thursday that her client didn't kill the girl but did try to keep police from learning what happened.

Phillip Gardner was accused after Nevaeh Allen's body was found in a shallow grave in Mississippi. Prosecutors say the girl mother's punched her, and that Gardner put the girl in a suitcase — still alive — and drove to a wooded area to hide the crime.

Both sides presented opening statements in Gardner's trial on Monday. The child's mother, Lanaya Cardwell, goes on trial Nov. 3; both pleaded not guilty in 2022.

According to the government, Cardwell punched the child because she was playing with her mother's last set of contact lenses. The blow knocked the child into a vanity cabinet, where the girl struck her head. After failing to rouse the child from a sleep, Gardner worried Cardwell would go to jail and decided to hide the body, prosecutors said Thursday.

Gardner's lawyer, however, said her client was a "hard-working family man" and guilty of nothing more than obstruction of justice.

After the punch, Gardner said, Nevaeh had a bruise on her forehead, according to police documents. When he returned from an errand, Nevaeh refused to eat due to stomach pain and became unresponsive, he told police, according to an affidavit.

Ultimately, he drove Nevaeh's and two other children under his supervision to Mississippi, where he buried Nevaeh in the woods and threw her clothes in a trash can, officials said.

Initially, Gardner had said he fell asleep and awoke to find the child missing. He later said he found the girl unresponsive and the buried the girl in Mississippi. Police say he left his cell phone at home so he wouldn't be tracked.

I don’t understand this guy’s defense. He’s admitting that he punched her but yet he’s not admitting that the punch caused her death?
Am I reading it wrong, he is saying the mother punched her and he didn't want her to go to jail? Seems to me. He just helped obstruct, hide her and so on I think is his claim.

I could be wrong, still waking up, skimmed through this one quickly as been awhile since looked at.

Man found guilty in 2021 killing of 2-year-old Nevaeh Allen

A man was convicted of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice after killing a two-year-old child and hiding her body in Mississippi woods.

A jury convicted Phillip Gardner on Wednesday after officials found the body of two-year-old Nevaeh Allen in a wooded area of Hancock County, Mississippi, in 2021. Allen's mother, Lanaya Cardwell, and her live-in boyfriend, Gardner, initially reported Allen missing.

Arrest documents said Cardwell punched Allen because she touched her contact lens while she was getting ready for work. An affidavit says Cardwell left the toddler with Gardner and the child became unresponsive. Police said he put Allen's body in a small suitcase and drove to Mississippi, where he buried the baby in the woods and threw her clothes in a trash can.

Gardner's conviction carries a life sentence. Cardwell's trial is set for Nov. 3.

Interesting, first time ever maybe that I looked at a link and there was less info than in the post, maybe one of those news places that change articles on the same link which I hate.

I don't even believe the perp's story, I rarely do. One has to consider the source always, but maybe some truth in parts. WHO PUNCHES their child, especially a mother?

I went into the link to see if it said more about his conviction carries a life sentence because I doubt it necessarily does--there was nothing about sentencing in either the post or the link, that's why I went to the link before I said anything.

It maybe COULD carry a life sentence but second degree rarely does and the judge probably has a range of what he/she can sentence. So that comment seems a bit inaccurate by the news source and 2nd degree rarely carries life or gets life.

Anyhow the article had no further answers, I didn't watch the video. It had less info as said than the post and didn't even have that stuff in there.

Heathens.

You know in some of these cases, he was home clearly as she left her with him so if you are getting ready for work, then plant your toddler with him and shut the bathroom door while you get ready. I mean it is so clear there is already something wrong in the household or in the relationship to begin with or the parenting. And in some cases it may be drugs. In others, they just abuse and take out their anger on the children. Some are just evil.

He couldn't watch her while she got ready for work? But was trusted to after she punched her and left and the child supposedly then died and he did nothing to her? Then he just went and buried her?

Okayyyyy.... I doubt the entire story is true if any.

Regardless, I don't think it's a given as said that he will get a life sentence. I HOPE he does.
