Authorities seeking help finding Windsor couple missing since July 1

Avillage of Windsor couple has been missing since July 1 and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public help in finding them.

On Wednesday, a family member reported that Bart and Krista Halderson were last seen on July 1 at their home and that they had planned a trip to Langlade County for the weekend and the family has been unable to confirm if they arrived safely, Lt. Brenda Reinen said in a report.

Their personal vehicles are accounted for, so there is no known vehicle to associate with the couple, the Sheriff's Office said.

‘We’ll find them:’ Son of missing Windsor couple says parents were going to lake cabin, but no sign of them

The son of a missing Windsor couple said his parents planned to go with friends to the family's cabin by Sawyer Lake more than three hours away, but says there's no sign of them there and there's been no contact with them for days.

"We'll find them," Chandler Halderson said of his parents, Bart Halderson, 50, and Krista Halderson, 53. "It's better to not listen to the negative theories," he says.

The younger Halderson said his parents planned to travel to their property in the community of Hollister in Langlade County Friday to do some minor repairs on their cabin and carry out general maintenance. He says friends were going with them and driving the group, but says he does not know who their traveling companions were.

Halderson said he received a text from his mother after his parents had apparently left on the trip.

"She got back to me on Sunday, said they made it safely," Halderson said.

Halderson said he contacted authorities after his parents did not return as planned Tuesday, and after a relative went to Hollister and did not find them. Halderson said authorities in Langlade County also checked the property, but found the cabin locked. "The sheriff said it looked like there wasn't anyone home," Halderson said.

Chandler Halderson holds out hope the inability to locate or contact his parents is benign.

"They're maybe at a casino, their phones off, no reception. Maybe they're on a boat, having some fun with their friends," Halderson said.

I fail to see the argument that his having Covid would bias the jury. How so? Anyone and everyone is getting Covid so I find that ridiculous! I for one am so tired of every ridiculous excuse under the sun for defendants and murder trials that never proceed for time on end but then legitimate reasons in other cases are denied. This one actually moved fast to trial but here we go...

Jurors are not to have bias or proceed with bias and are picked and questioned on that basis. Then, however, excuses and arguments continue of this will cause bias, this testimony shouldn't be allowed because of it, or that information, etc., etc., etc. I am so not enamored of much of our system these days.

The defendant is not the only person affected in a trial!! Jurors are and victims' families are! In the bid to go overboard on ensuring a fair trial for defendants, the system is trampling on the rights of everyone else involved.

Rant over.

Does this "kid" have private attorneys? I'd just say that in Wisconsin public defenders I think (unless it has changed) are paid a statutory rate and it's not very much and in fact it used to be pretty low compared to most states. I get it with privately paid attorneys but this kid killed his folks because he was hiding the fact he had no job, wasn't going to school, etc. right? And life insurance it sounds like is hung up and not paid out (probably over this) so pretty sure he would have a public defender.
I know here, they still get to charge the state billable hours. It's a much lesser rate, but still more $$ coming in with very little extra work.

with video being an easy option now, I don't see how they can't have him "there" without being there.

I'm not arguing but I'd disagree with that some. A murder trial isn't little work and although it is thought (and probably true) many public defenders don't do much for their clients or go all out to represent them, many do as they do get judged for that exact criticism. Attorneys make far more at their regular billing hour rates than spending their hours on public defender work also. And in the end it is the client who decides on the plea and whether they want a trial.

Now if a person takes a case like Ghislaine Maxwell where this is big money and notice, I totally agree getting as many billable hours probably plays in for some of the defense attorneys...

It's $40 per hour in Wisconsin and $25 for travel. The last two attorneys I've used are $300 per hour and they are not criminal defense attorneys and those for murder (private attorneys) with experience I don't doubt are far higher than that. $40 an hour for an attorney? It isn't worth it to them to waste those hours on low paid work.

but continuance after continuance is little extra work and most clients don't realize that most continuances are not necessary and ONLY billable hours for their attorney. They are just glad to not have to face the music until later. Some cases do actually need more time, but not many. $40/hr and $25 for travel each and every time ads up. What some also don't realize is that when one is billing for their trip, the attorney is often filing paperwork on multiple cases at the same time, yet billing each client for that same trip and that same hour or two to each of those clients, too.

I get all of that but they can be doing multiple cases of $300 an hour, not $40. $40 per hours is a joke of a rate for an attorney who passed the bar.

In fact, some states or counties I think insist all private attorneys take a turn at public defender, pro bono work or GAL work at low or no rate billing. I know some have lists of the few willing to do such work otherwise and pick from that. Few are willing as any attorney worth their salt makes more than that on almost any other type of legal work.

My state is one of those that at least used to have a mandatory rotation, but my knowledge of that is from quite a few years ago when a friend had to serve. She liked it though, but I can see how some would not be able to take the responsibility of a major case with existing case load. They did have provisions for that, but don't know those details

Yeah, I doubt they do it with something like a murder here or with public defenders but they rotate with things like GALs I know in some areas at least. I think maybe a county can insist those attys in their own county perform that duty. I don't know all the details here either.

Judge clears way for Chandler Halderson trial to resume

A Dane County judge cleared the way Friday for the resumption of testimony in the trial of a 23-year-old man accused of killing his parents last summer and then dismembering and hiding their bodies.

In a short order, Circuit Judge John Hyland said that after a “period of isolation and quarantine,” no one involved in the trial is showing symptoms of COVID-19 and the trial will resume on Jan. 18.

Dr. Christina Figuero-Soto is a Forensic Anthropologist who I recommend listening to for a better appreciation of the human body & how she was able to discern that 230 bone (fragments) found in the Halderson fireplace & ash trap were indeed human.

*I was most impressed by the way she spoke. She described difficult terms very easily so that any nonprofessional anthopologist could understand.

On June 29th, 2021 Bart Halderson called Madison College & spoke with Omar Job for approximately 19 minutes. He learned that Chandler was not actively enrolled & the academic coordinators names that were provided by Chandler did not exist as employees. Testimony earlier in the day revealed that Chandler created 3 email accounts; 2 were intended to be employees of Madison College & 1 was supposed to be with State Farm. These fictitious accounts were used by Chandler to suggest he was trying to obtain his graduation certificate from Madison, which did not exist. He took classes in 2018, 2019 and the Fall semester 2020. In total he completed about 4 courses, failed &/or withdrew from the others.

Bart's employer provided LE the last email sent from his work laptop which was dated July 1st, 2021 approximately 3pm.

The court is now at lunch recess.

OK for many like @Kimster who like the cell tracking testimony today is the day to watch. The mapping of the cellular data from Chandler, Krista & Bart's were explained in the best way possible. These maps were animated to explain each one's movement by using the azimuth provided by the cellular company. As a bonus, the testimony provided x,y coordinates for each Snapchat that Chandler sent to his then girlfriend.

To add even more evidence, Chandler's google search history was introduced which is how the the second first degree murder charge was applied.

Another powerful day!

I have to repeat after seeing more facts and testimony posted above, just why is this guy going through with a trial? Just what defense does he or his lawyers think they have? I don't see even much for a poor defense...

He didn't wave his right to a speedy trial which could make prosecutors nervous because of the discovery process. The two defense attorneys are simply arguing that no one saw him commit the crimes he's accused of & forcing the weight of circumstantial evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. There was no major blood scene that one would think there'd be with dismemberment. There are a lot of small details that don't weigh in his favor however the burden of proof has to be shown.

I'd say reasonable doubt is pretty much surpassed. Imo. And that's just from reading about testimony and facts that have come out and not excessively. It seems they likely have motive, means, opportunity and plenty of it to lead to only one reasonable conclusion. Jmo.
