Young mom found murdered in Wheeling apartment; 1-year-old daughter missing, police say

Police making a well-being check at a Wheeling apartment building Tuesday night found a woman slain and her 1-year-old daughter missing.

Ja'nya Murphy, 21, was discovered around 10:20 pm. Tuesday after officers climbed onto a balcony and entered her apartment in the 300 block of Inland Drive in Wheeling, according to Deputy Police Chief Al Steffen.

Murphy appeared to have been murdered and her daughter, Jaclyn "Angel" Dobbs was not in the home, Steffen said.

The cause of death was unclear, he said, but "based upon what the officers discovered would lead a reasonable person to believe that a homicide was committed."

Steffen said it appeared Murphy had been assaulted and they are eager to find her daughter.

"We need the public's assistance with this," Steffen said. "They might be able to connect the dots, connect a link that we don't have right now."

Murphy was a 2018 graduate of Stevenson High School and lived with her daughter at the apartment building, Wheeling police said.

The Major Case Assistance Team was called in to help collect and process evidence. A forensics team was scouring the scene and the Cook County medical examiner's office has yet to perform an autopsy, Steffen said.

Police went to the building after Murphy had not been to work Tuesday and had not been seen by relatives since Monday, Steffen said.

Steffen said Murphy would drop Angel off to relatives before work, but she didn't drop off the baby on Tuesday and she didn't show up to her retail job. Murphy's family last talked with her Monday.

Steffen added that detectives are looking at her social media to find people who actually interacted with her so they can reconstruct the last 24 hours of her life.

Wheeling police: 21-year-old mother killed, 1-year-old daughter kidnapped

Police are urgently searching for a 1-year-old girl believed kidnapped after the killing of her mother, who was found dead late Tuesday night in her Wheeling apartment.

"We know that because the child is missing and not with her loved ones," Steffen said.

Police have not yet issued an Amber Alert for Angel because they don't have information about whom she might be with or what kind of vehicle may be involved, Steffen said. Investigators have been in touch with the girl's father, he said.

"We have no persons of interest as of yet," Steffen said. "There's no indication that anyone would want to hurt (Murphy)."

According to police, Murphy's family members filed a missing persons report at 10:22 p.m. Tuesday, after becoming concerned that she hadn't shown up at her job at a store and hadn't been in contact with relatives since Monday night.

Steffen said family members were so concerned that after they had been to her apartment a number of times and there was no answer, police and firefighters went to the apartment to gain access. They used a ladder to get onto the apartment's balcony, where the door was unlocked.

"It was readily apparent to the officers that went in that it was a crime scene," Steffen said.

Investigators, including those from more than 20 police departments who are part of a regional task force, are trying to piece together the last 24 to 48 hours of Murphy's life. The probe includes searching for anyone who she may have been in contact with or spent time with, and other details of her personal history.

The Cook County medical examiner's office is also scheduled to perform an autopsy Thursday.

Police: Person of interest in Wheeling killing, kidnapping located in Missouri

Wheeling police say they have located a person of interest in the killing of a woman found dead in her apartment Tuesday and the kidnapping of her 1-year-old daughter.

The man, who had been in a relationship with 21-year-old Ja'nya Murphy before her death, was found in Missouri along with the 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan in which police believe Murphy's daughter, Jaclyn "Angel" Dobbs, had been riding, Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Al Steffen said Thursday.

However, Jaclyn is still missing.

The person of interest is not the father of the girl, nor was he someone who lived with the mother and daughter, Steffen said.

Bad enough they kill the mothers, then they take the child and 9 times out of ten they are dead later and never seen again. I pray because he was in a relationship with the mother that he cared about the child and left the child with a friend or his mother or something. It does not say he is the child's dad and that's worrisome too if he is just a bf.

Young Child’s Body Found In Pond In Northwest Indiana, Sources Say Wheeling Police Believe It Is 1-Year-Old Jaclyn ‘Angel’ Dobbs

A body was found in a retention pond Northwest Indiana on Thursday afternoon, and Wheeling police sources believe it belongs to 1-year-old Jaclyn “Angel” Dobbs.

As CBS 2’s Marie Saavedra reported late Thursday, Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifeld said fire crews were called to the scene by construction workers, and divers went in and recovered the body of a young child in the retention pond. The retention pond sits in a cloverleaf exit ramp on the Borman Expressway (I-80/94) to Kennedy Avenue in Hammond.

Fifeld could not say how old the child was, but said the child was less than 5 years old and was a Black female.

Fifeld said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the child’s death. He said the pond is four or five feet deep and walkable.

The body is now in the care of the Lake County, Indiana Coroner, which is now working on making a positive identification.

“I don’t have any specifics of anything in particular that they would be looking for. You know, any crime scene you’re looking for evidence, so any evidence that would be pertinent to this crime is what we would be looking for,” Fifeld said.

But while State Police did not have an identity for the body, police in north suburban Wheeling have been searching for Jaclyn ever since her mother was found dead in their home Tuesday night. Wheeling police told CBS 2’s Jackie Kostek they believe the body to be Jaclyn’s.

Kostek spoke to the deputy police chief in Wheeling. He said Jaclyn’s family has been notified and that they fear the worst.

Steffens says the tip about the child’s body in Northwest Indiana did not come from the person of interest, but rather a tip that someone called into Indiana State Police.

A Wheeling mother was strangled to death before her body was found by police during a well-being check and her daughter discovered missing, an autopsy found Thursday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said an autopsy found 21-year-old Ja'nya Murphy died of asphyxiation strangulation.

What I don't understand is why they even take the child in cases like this??!! Not that killing them along with the mother would be good either, but WHY do they take off with them?? Some are never found... I think we still have a few on here like that, mother found dead, child still missing.

I do not know what is wrong with people today. Maybe this guy loses it on the mother, in a relationship, that's bad enough but this is a BABY... How can anyone be sooo cold....? And if one thinks about it, this is intentional, if they have left the mother's murder and are driving with the child, they have time again to make a CHOICE...

Man in Illinois custody for woman’s murder faces new charges for allegedly killing her baby

An Illinois man faces a murder charge in connection with a 1-year-old found dead in a Hammond pond nearly two years ago, according to charging documents.

Ahmeel Fowler, 27, of Pingree Grove was charged Thursday with killing the child after her remains were found in a retention pond off a Hammond highway exit ramp in 2021.

Fowler is currently in custody at the Cook County Jail on a murder charge in connection with the death of the child’s mother, Ja'nya Murphy. He has been held without bail since November 2021, according to court records.

A spokesperson from the Lake County Prosecutor’s office could not specify why Fowler was charged with the child's murder almost two years after he was charged with Murphy’s.

Didn't even realize this was at trial.

Man found guilty in strangling girlfriend, kidnapping baby later found dead in pond

A man was found guilty of murdering a Wheeling mother and kidnapping her daughter, who was later found dead.

Nearly five years later, a jury deliberated for less than two hours before convicting Fowler.

He was found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping.

He will likely be sentenced on April 20 in his next court hearing.

Too bad it's not a death penalty case. He absolutely deserves it. Killing the mother was terrible. But then throwing her one year into a retention pond. That was a premeditated completely evil act. He wasn't the father. I don't know why he took her. Did he really think taking her would stump any investigation?. Or was it complete hate for the mother?. Was a POI from the beginning. POS.
