UMBC student has been missing for two weeks

Alisa Samuels THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

A 24-year-old information systems management student at University of Maryland Baltimore County has been missing since Nov. 28.

The brother of Tu Thi Cam Tran reported her missing to the school police, said Louise M. White, director of media relations for UMBC. Tran lives with her brother and his family in Lanham, Prince George's County, White said.

A Baltimore County police spokesman said the case is being handled by the school since its police officers are fully certified to investigate incidents believed to have occurred on the campus.

Tran, a senior at UMBC, was last seen in the university center about 8:30 p.m. Nov. 26 by a friend, White said. Hours before, Tran had finished a class in the fine arts building about 6:45 p.m.

A search of the 500-acre university was organized immediately after Tran was reported missing. The effort was unsuccessful, White said. White said there is no reason to believe Tran has been harmed.

Tran was described by White as attractive with dark hair to her shoulders and a slim build. Anyone with information about the missing student should call 455-3133.

Twenty four year old Tu Thi-Cam Tran was an Information Systems Management student at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD. She was living in nearby Leham, MD, with her brother and his family while she attended school. There are two different disappearance dates noted for Tran in the media. One is Monday evening, November 26th, 1990. The other is Wednesday, November 28th, 1990. Tu Thi-Cam Tran’s class at the Fine Arts Building of UMBC wrapped up around 6:45PM. From there, Tran walked to the nearby University Center and stayed awhile, talking to at least one person. She then reportedly left the building around 8:30PM toward her car, but was never seen again. Tu Thi-Cam Tran’s brother reported her missing when she failed to return home.

UMBC Police Department conducted a large search of the entire campus to no avail. Tran is described as 4’9” tall, 90 pounds, with shoulder length wavy black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing the necklace shown in the photo above, a blouse, jeans and sneakers. Unfortunately, very little information is available and Tu’s disappearance was not heavily covered in the media. But perhaps there are former 1990 UMBC students who remember even the smallest detail that could help give the Tran family some answers at last. If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Tu Thi-Cam Tran, please contact UMBC Police Department at (410)-455-5555 or police@umbc.edu.
