Is anyone watching the Lindsay Clancy trial?

I am watching the Lindsay Clancy trial unfold, and this is easily one of the most difficult cases I have witnessed. Three children died and now the jury must decide if their mother was criminally responsible for their deaths.

The prosecution is arguing that her actions were premeditated and that she knew exactly what she was doing. The defense is arguing that her mental state impaired her ability to know or control her actions. There is still a lot of evidence to be presented, specifically the medical evidence, so I am trying hard not to make my mind up until it is all presented.

What I have noticed is how challenging it must be to determine actual mental illness versus a made-up legal defense. On the other hand, I do not want to focus so much on her state that we forget about the victims. They were the children who were killed.

Jurors in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial began deliberating a verdict Thursday, tasked with deciding whether she was in control of herself when she killed her three children, or had lost her grip on reality due to mental illness.

In her closing argument, a prosecutor said Clancy strangled her three children because she was depressed and tired of living.

“It was a choice to take them with her,” said prosecutor Jennifer Sprague said. “It is a choice that we don’t want to think about that a mother could make.”

“But it’s a choice she made,” Sprague said.

Clancy’s attorney contends she was experiencing postpartum psychosis when she killed her children, telling jurors she was a loving mother before her mental health collapsed and she repeatedly sought help that failed her. The rare mental illness is linked to stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes following childbirth.

“This young lady is not guilty of the killing of her children because she was suffering from a disease,” defense attorney Kevin Reddington told jurors.

The jury met for a few hours Thursday and will resume deliberations Friday morning. Clancy’s mental state is at the center of the closely watched trial that has drawn attention to maternal mental health after childbirth. The debate has stirred deep divisions among the public over whether she should be held criminally responsible for the January 2023 killings.

Clancy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, the case will soon be in the hands of the jury, here are the options they have:

• Clancy could be found guilty of first-degree murder. In the state of Massachusetts, first-degree murder - the intentional and premeditated killing of another person - carries a mandatory life in prison sentence without the possibility of parole.
• Clancy could be found guilty of a lesser charge including second-degree murder - committed with malice or extreme recklessness, but without prior planning - or involuntary manslaughter - causing death because of extreme carelessness. In either of those instances she'd face time behind bars.
• If she's found not guilty by reason of insanity she will not be set free. She'll go to a psychiatric hospital where her status will be periodically reviewed. She could remain in hospital for life.

I don’t know how number three could be an option. Because if she’s cured of postpartum depression, they could let her out anytime, right?
