EXCLUSIVE: St. James family seeks public’s help finding missing 15-year-old boy

The family of a 15-year-old St. James boy who has been missing for two weeks is asking for the public’s help to bring him home.

Police say Thomas Medlin was last seen Jan. 9 after leaving his school and boarding a train at the Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station.

Police say he traveled to Grand Central Terminal, where surveillance images captured him later that day. His family says they have not heard from him since.

Medlin’s mother, Eva, told News 12 in an exclusive interview that detectives now believe her son met someone online through the gaming app Roblox and was planning to meet that person in the city. She says that behavior is completely out of character for the 15-year-old.

Eva Medlin says family and friends have been searching for Thomas nearly every day, organizing different search parties across Long Island and the city.

Police also informed the family that Medlin’s last known locations were near Cherry and Rutgers streets in Lower Manhattan and later near Sands and Jay Street in Brooklyn.

15-year-old boy missing after traveling to meet someone from Roblox, family says

A 15-year-old boy in New York has been missing for two weeks after reportedly traveling to see someone he met on Roblox.

Thomas Medlin went missing on Friday, Jan. 9, after traveling from his home on Long Island to Manhattan after school, according to a news release.

Medlin left Stony Brook School that Friday at around 3:30 p.m. and “ran” to the Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station, where he seemingly caught a train into Manhattan.

His family has not heard from the teen since he left that Friday afternoon.

Medlin’s mother, Eva Yan, told News 12 that she believed the teen was heading into the city to meet someone he became acquainted with through Roblox. She said that the behavior was completely out of character for the 15-year-old.

A photo shared by police shows the 15-year-old wearing a backpack and holding a large object while walking on what appears to be a New York City subway platform.

The teen — who is 5-foot-4 and weighs 130 pounds — was last seen wearing a black jacket with red stripes, dark sweatpants with white stripes, a black backpack and glasses, according to police.

Police have since traced Thomas’s location in Lower Manhattan and later in Brooklyn, News 12 reported.

A spokesperson for Roblox released a statement saying, “We are deeply troubled by this incident and are working with law enforcement to support their investigation.”

“Roblox is built with safety at its core, including robust policies to help protect users that go beyond many other platforms,” the Roblox spokesperson continued. “We have filters designed to block the sharing of personal information and don’t allow user-to-user image or video sharing. While no system is perfect, our commitment to safety never ends, and we continue to evolve and strengthen our protections every day.”

The spokesperson also said the company can not comment further at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

I don't believe a word Roblox says. Heard about this platform more than once and they've been in the news for such before.

Whoever he met that talked him into meeting is NOT a good person we can figure.

Unless he is fortunate enough that the other person was a teen and he is staying with the teen and his parents which is highly doubtful.

Praying they find him safe.

Parents need to monitor kids' activity all of the time. We're not in early times with these things any longer, most all of parents have to have heard that somewhere by now.

I'm not blaming the parents just warning others.

St. James Teen Likely Plummeted From Manhattan Bridge Weeks Ago, Police Hint In Update

A Long Island teenager who vanished after traveling to New York City was last seen on the pedestrian walkway of the Manhattan Bridge, where surveillance footage later captured a splash in the water, police said.

Detectives have determined that Thomas Medlin, 15, of Saint James, was last known to be on the Manhattan Bridge on Friday, Jan. 9, at about 7:06 p.m, Suffolk County Police revealed in an update Wednesday, Jan. 28.

Medlin’s cell phone last showed activity at approximately 7:09 p.m., police said. One minute later, at 7:10 p.m., a nearby surveillance camera captured a splash in the water. Detectives said Medlin was never seen leaving the bridge via pedestrian exits.

The findings were made following extensive video canvassing and a review of digital evidence, polcie added.

As part of the investigation, detectives executed subpoenas and search warrants and conducted forensic examinations of Medlin’s electronic devices, as well as reviews of multiple social media and online gaming profiles, police said.

Medlin’s mother, Eva Yan, previously told News 12 she believed her son went to the city to meet someone he had communicated with through the online gaming platform Roblox. Investigators determined the platform was not connected to Medlin’s disappearance, police said.

“There is no indication of criminal activity,” Suffolk police said, adding that detectives have remained in continuous communication with Medlin’s family and are working with law enforcement partners to bring closure.

Search for Missing Long Island Boy, 15, Focuses on East Side

Yan explained that Thomas had asked to stay after school that day and that his parents could pick him up 9 p.m. The Stony Brook School, in Stony Brook, is a private Christian college preparatory school with both residential and commuter students. That her son would stay late and socialize with his classmates was nothing unusual and something his parents encouraged.

When Yan’s husband went to pick up Thomas at 9 p.m., he wasn’t there. School security was immediately informed and inquiries made of the boy Thomas was supposed to be hanging out with that day. That classmate said he hadn’t seen Thomas except in school. Security searches of the school’s dorms, with continued until 2 a.m. Saturday, turned up nothing.

Meanwhile, Yan and a friend went out looking for Thomas themselves at 12:30 a.m. and when that was unsucessful, they went to the Suffolk County Police.

In the days following, it was learned that after Friday’s school dismissal, Medlin had rushed to the Stony Brook Station of the Long Island Rail Road on North Country Road, literally adjacent the school, Road and taken a train to Grand Central Station.

Yan further revealed that Thomas had told a friend he “met” someone on Roblox and wanted to them. Though his friend warned against this, “don’t go, it’s not safe, you have to watch out,” his warning, it wasn’t heeded.

Starting to break down but then composing herself, Yan went on to explain that, besides the unbearable pain of her missing son, it takes a long time for the the various social media platforms, including Roblox, to release information, even when a missing child, and police, are involved.

Roblox, which has faced prior criticism for its child safety policies, issued a statement saying “We share everyone’s hope for Thomas Medlin’s safe return and our thoughts are with him and his family. We conduced a thorough review to support law enforcement’s investigation and found no attempts to direct to an off-platform communication method or sharing of off-platform contact information.”

For their part the SCPD “has determined that these [online] platforms are not connected to his disappearance. There is no indication of criminal activity.”

Her voice again trembling during her Fox interview, delivered a public message for her son: ”We just want him to know we love him deeply and he’s not in trouble at all. You know, whatever he did we understand. Please, we just want him to tell us he’s safe, because thinking about that each day, where he be, if he’s safe, it’s really put usit’s f***ing hell, more than hell.”

”It’s a deep message, we love him so much, we want him to send us a message. Whoever this person he is staying with, have a kind heart and let us parents know, all the family and friends know, he’s safe, nobody is going to harm him.

”That’s the big message. When he’s ready to come home, let us know, we’ll come pick him up. He’s not in trouble at all. We love him more than anything in our life.”

These kids meeting up with random online people seems to be getting more common. Does anyone else think the same?

Body Of Missing Saint James Teen Found In Brooklyn Waters: Police

The body of Thomas Medlin, a 15-year-old from Saint James, has been recovered, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Police said Medlin’s body was recovered from the water off Red Hook, in Brooklyn, on March 7. Authorities confirmed his identity on Thursday.

Detectives said there was no indication of criminal activity connected to the case. Authorities said investigators have remained in communication with Medlin’s family to bring closure.

So, they don't think someone caused him to die in the river? I mean, he was lured away from home, wasn't he?
