‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Sheriff believes Savannah Guthrie’s mother was abducted: ‘She did not leave on her own’

The mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie is still missing Monday night after being taken from her Arizona home more than a day earlier, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who said the investigation into her alleged abduction is ongoing.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen Saturday around 9:30 p.m. near her home, where she lives alone in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, the sheriff said.

When asked whether Guthrie was kidnapped, Nanos told CNN’s Erin Burnett, “I’ve been doing this for 50 years. I have a gut feeling.”

Evidence found at the scene also indicates Guthrie was removed from her home in the middle of the night against her will, said Nanos, who did not provide more details about the case.

The sheriff also declined to comment on whether any evidence indicates Guthrie was hurt, saying, “I just can’t really speak to that right now.”

“We also believe she was taken from her bed but cannot speak as to why,” Nanos told CNN in an email Monday. Officials do not know what time Guthrie may have been taken, Nanos added.

Guthrie has mobility issues and is without daily medication that is critical to maintaining her health, according to Nanos.

“The family has told us 24 hours without those meds could be fatal, and here we are at 30 plus hours,” Nanos said Monday night.

Homicide detectives were sent to Guthrie’s home, in a non-standard move, according to Nanos. And what detectives found at the scene was “very concerning,” the sheriff said.

“We believe now, after we’ve processed that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene — that we do in fact have a crime,” Nanos said during a news conference Monday. No additional updates are expected Monday, according to the sheriff’s department.

Authorities have Guthrie’s cellphone, said Nanos, and have described the circumstances as suspicious.

Nanos says authorities have received a lot of leads but “nothing specific” to the investigation. Downloading security camera footage from the home is now the main priority for investigators, Nanos told CNN.

While local law enforcement is leading the investigation, FBI agents from across Arizona are “fully engaged” and are offering numerous technical resources to local authorities, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Agents are assisting with analysis of data from cell phone towers near the Guthrie home, the source said, which is an FBI specialty often offered to support missing persons and fugitive cases.

Local and federal authorities are canvassing nearby residences and businesses for any security camera footage that may assist in identifying a possible suspect, the source said.

Search and rescue teams, including volunteers, dogs, border patrol agents and helicopters, were also dispatched overnight.

Police do not believe there is a threat to the public, Nanos said.

“Everybody just wants to be able to know that they can go outside and enjoy their community and come home and be safe at night in their rooms, asleep in bed, and this lady wasn’t able to accomplish that,” Nanos said Monday. “We need her back. We need to find her, and time is very critical.”

Nate says Savannah was supposed to be in Italy for Olympic opening ceremonies shortly but apparently is canceling.

I can't even imagine this, my mom is right around that age and can't fathom such happening. Awful.

I’ve been watching reports about this disappearance. It’s all over the news tonight! What could’ve happened? I don’t think she was kidnapped. If she was kidnapped, they would’ve called by now.
I'm not so sure it relates to her daughter's job. I mean I guess it's possible if her mom talked about the fact she was her daughter but most people wouldn't know, I mean I wouldn't have had I run into her mom where she lives.

I saw something about her being taken while she slept or awakened or something, not sure how true that is. It was popping up all day today everywhere and tonight but since I was waiting for a Banfield verdict, I didn't watch much on it. Nate covered it somewhat tonight but most of his show was about Banfield too.

I saw headlines a lot, just never really watched a show, however, I did read the initial reports and watch the police chief and all that earlier.

I think it's easy to assume or wonder if it relates to the daughter but yeah, would they be chancing things if a ransom demand was coming or expected? Nate did say she lived in a very nice area...

People just don't kidnap 80 some year old people. Pretty unusual. Unless for their debit cards and taking them to an ATM, getting their PINs, etc. OR they witnesssed something.

It COULD relate to Savannah but I don't think it's a definite by any means. She sounds in relatively good health and of good mind they make sure is known.

I wish someone would focus on what possibly in her life or area that this could relate to, there's an immediate jump it seems to me because of who her daughter is which of course, could relate but again who would know her mom lived there?

My mom in the next few months is going to be 82 so man it's easy to relate as I'm sure you can too. My mom could probably run circles around me and will likely outlive me too. I get the impression this lady may be similar although they do say she has some health issues. Maybe I'll watch some things on it tomorrow but I'm guessing not much more is known and most shows would probably cover just what is known.

Okay. I haven't watched all of this yet but she says she talked to the sheriff and he was very forthcoming with her and a lot more known since earlier. She also knows Savannah she says and they are friends.

So a family member dropped her off and saw her last. She then did not show up for church the next day (yesterday).

Anyhow, seems this might be a good one to watch. I'll come back and say if it was.

Cell phone, car, etc. at home. So far I'm not hearing anything I hadn't heard before and I didn't even hardly watch anything about it. However, it is a total coverage of it/summary. And I'm not done yet. She still says talk with sheriff she had is upcoming. Shall see.

Ashley sometimes imo overhypes what she has. I go very back and forth on her. But I'm not through it yet, just maybe 1/3 in if that.

He says there was an hour or so delay in family calling, nothing unusual, just that they went to see what was up, made some calls, etc. and then decided to call 911....

So a family member dropped her off night before, she didn't show up at church the next day so some church person called family, family went to see what was what and after about an hour or so yesterday called 911...

Hmmm. I'm not saying I think this but because we say it in child cases, etc., I'm going to say the same, I don't like it when the last sighting of someone is from family. I have no reason to think anything is up here AT ALL but i'd say that in any other case. I'd like to know when she was last seen by others, etc. Where was she coming home from? Maybe a day with family or something and they brought her home late that night? Which would be Saturday. Did they go in with her or just drop her off and see her enter her home?

Still listening.

They don't believe she left the home on foot and they have her vehicle. She's very capable of driving. Has her wits about her. Just a bit limited with mobility. No big issues. They do have her cell phone, he can't confirm purse, keys, wallet, etc. yet, he hasn't heard. He did say it could be accurate about purse, keys, etc. but doesn't know for sure. He'd have to ask his team.

He wouldn't answer if blood found or bedding missing. Did say there was DNA they submitted for rapid DNA testing... They had to get it up to Phoenix for rapid testing but their machine was out of order or some such??? That's a new one to me... Never heard of such a thing. Machines out of order...

Okay so is a bit interesting at this point but he isn't confirming or answering some things as it goes with investigations.

They do rush orders on DNA and he says the name of one of the labs and says they do them pretty well with rush orders... Hmm, guess it's different everywhere as is priority. Interesting.

It is worth the listen at the moment.

Ashleigh asks him where was the DNA found that they knew it was valuable to them? He said he can't tell her that. It's from the home is all he can say. She asks if door handles...? He says and I quote "I cannot go there, no"

wow he's saying Ms. Banfield we are not trying to be secretive but there are certain things in the home, etc., etc., they know only the intruder knows about and they don't want that information out...

Okay. I can now say it's worth a listen and a watch. I'm 21 minutes in out of about 36 or so. Might take a break. Not that it is something a break is needed from but I need one, it's late, after midnight here, long day.
