California authorities launch search for girl who hasn’t been seen in at least 1 year

Authorities in Santa Barbara County launched a search for a 9-year-old girl who has not been seen in a year, and who has not been seen in a photograph in two.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office began searching for Melodee Buzzard on Tuesday after a school administrator reported she hadn’t been at school in quite some time.

Deputies attempted to contact Melodee and her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, at their home in Lompoc, but the elementary school student was not there, and “no clear explanation was provided for her whereabouts.”

Although the missing persons case is only one-day-old, detectives have been unable to confirm a single recent sighting in about a year. The most recent photograph they were able to locate was taken at least two years ago, officials said.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about Melodee, potential sightings or contact in the past year, to come forward.

“Even small details may be critical in helping investigators ensure her safety,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release.

Detectives investigating disappearance of 9-year-old Vandenberg Village girl

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help as they investigate the disappearance of a child from Vandenberg Village.

Sheriff’s officials say their investigation began on Tuesday, Oct. 14, when a school administrator reported that 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard had been absent for a prolonged period of time.

Deputies reportedly tried to contact Melodee and her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, at their home in the 500 block of Mars Avenue but the child was not there, and sheriff’s officials say there was no clear explanation provided for her whereabouts.

Sheriff’s detectives turn to the public to locate missing 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard

Sheriff's detectives are turning to the public for help locating missing 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard.

On Oct. 14, a school administrator reported that Melodee had been missing from school for some time and when deputies arrived at Melodee's mother's home in the 500 block of Mars Avenue in Vandenberg Village, the 9-year-old was not there and, "no clear explanation was provided for her whereabouts" stated a press release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office Wednesday.

So she hasn't been in school for a year. Did the school not inquire for an entire year? I guess it might have been at the end of the school year she had been seen and they assumed she moved over the summer but you would wonder why nobody asked for her transcripts.

I spent a summer in Vandenburg when I was a teen. It was an Air Force Base at the time. Is the base still there?

Maybe that triggered something this year since the school year has only been in session a couple of months.

But that means she was also not attending since at least midway last year if they haven't seen her in at least a year, if not the entire school year.

I’m just saying it probably took somebody time to start thinking about it. Who knows how long it’s been since she’s been in school. The reports say a year. We need a date.

Here an inquiry starts within a week or so if they haven't attended in that long. IF they then don't get a response, they go higher up.

Is Vanderberg part of Lompoc, CA? That's how it seems to come up. Mapped it and Mars Avenue looks like a decent area. it's not a through street either.

Pretty girl and she looks well taken care of in the one photo, not that that means anything necessarily.

What in the heck is not a "clear" explanation? What did the mom say? And are they trying to get a clear explanation still?

It is only a day in, maybe she is with a grandparent or her dad or an aunt or something. One can hope.

Why did the school not trigger/notice sooner?? Had the mom been calling her in sick or anything? Speculation--did she say they'd be away for a time and then the school did not notice right away when she did not come back? I mean why so long before alerting to it?? They need to tighten things up it sounds like OR is there more to this that it triggered now?

I'm still not sure from where she went missing? Vandenberg is still a base, from what I've gathered. Lompoc is the city near the base. I'm wondering if this is an unincorporated area in-between the two places. This might account for why they didn't question Melodee's disappearance in the school district, if people are often coming and going due to the air force facility nearby.

ETA: According to Wiki, my suspicions are correct. It's an unincorporated area near the base and Lompoc.

The sheriff's office confirmed to the Daily Mail that the mother and daughter are the only two known residents of the home.

There are pictures of the mother and the home at the link. It looks quite nice, actually. VERY strange so far!

But then they are used to the children's records being sent elsewhere, but yes, that might be part of the length of time.

Yeah it looked like a pretty nice area when I mapped it, with newer homes. I guess that does not mean anything.

Boy mother looks just like daughter but an adult version.

So she was homeschooled and CA must require coordination with the school and reporting. You have to be home all of the time for mom to home school yet she's apparently not there.

I still don't understand the "not clear" answer from the mother.

It seems that other than not providing info to the school, nothing shows she is missing or anything happened. I still hope until a clearer answer that she maybe is with some relative or something.

Melodee is homeschooled, and no one has checked on her since October 2024, ABC News reported.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived Tuesday at Melodee’s home on the 500 block of Mars Avenue in Vandenberg Village, an unincorporated area north of the city of Lompoc, looking for Melodee and her mother, Ashlee Buzzard. No one was at the home, ABC News reported, but when deputies returned the next day, only the mother was there.

The sheriff’s office said “no clear explanation was provided for [Melodee’s] whereabouts,” and investigators weren’t able to confirm any recent sightings of her. Investigators determined that the last confirmed sighting of Melodee was last year, and her most recent photo is from two years ago.

According to Santa Barbara County Superior Court records, documents matching Ashlee Buzzard’s name and address show she is under legal scrutiny around allegations of unpaid debts. Some of the most recent legal proceedings included a May collections case from Capital One. The same company also sued her in civil court in December 2024, alleging she owed $2,778.84. And in 2024, a debt collection agency filed a case against her seeking $4,182.57 in damages that she allegedly owed to Discover Bank, though that case has seen been dismissed.

For another case, a process server attempted to contact Buzzard at her Mars Avenue home in November 2024 on behalf of Crown Asset Management but was unable to find her, court documents show.

“There was no answer at the address. House appears to be vacant but maintained house sounded empty. When I knocked garage is completely empty. There are no decorations or mats by the door,” the process server wrote in the document. A neighbor told the process server that the house had been vacant for approximately three months.

Last month, a different process server attempting to reach Buzzard for the same case told the court they were unable to find her in Lompoc.

Anyone who has contacted Melodee in the past year or has details about her whereabouts is urged to call the sheriff’s office at 805-681-4150 or the tipline at 805-681-4171.

“Even small details may be critical in helping investigators ensure her safety,” the sheriff’s office said.

Information about homeschooling in California. This part stood out to me. Must have been time to check on those yearly affidavits.

Parents are not required to report to their school district. However, public school districts are required to verify a child’s exemption from compulsory education by verifying that the private school affidavit filing requirements have been met.

Anyone offering or conducting private school instruction on the elementary or high school level is required to annually file a private school affidavit.

I wonder when she was taken out of public school and the reasons. I do know some families that do a wonderful job of homeschooling but the parents are capable of actually teaching their kids and make sure they meet proper milestones. They also group with other hs families where the parents have their niche skills. Another one has parents that are travel nurses and those kids are very well rounded and learn so much in their travels.

Neighbors, family concerned following Vandenberg Village 9-year-old’s disappearance

By: Concern is growing in Vandenberg Village following the disappearance of a 9-year-old girl.
Authorities say they’ve spoken with Melodee Buzzard’s mother, Ashlee, but that she hasn't provided information as to where her daughter may be.
“As a mother, my mom heart absolutely cannot take this. I felt really inclined to step in,” said Janet Holmes, who lives near the 500 block of Mars Avenue, where authorities say the girl lives.
Late Thursday morning, Homes was headed to the home in an effort to speak with the girl's mother, Ashlee Buzzard.
“Maybe to be helpful, to suggest maybe we put out fliers,” Holmes said, but no one answered the door.
About 30 minutes later, a woman appearing to be Ashlee returned home, quickly walking from her car to the front of the home. She did not speak with KSBY before going inside and shutting the door.

Community Reporter Crystal Bermudez knocked on the door, but no one answered.
Later in the afternoon, the woman was seen loading things into her car and then driving off. When she returned to the home again, the back door of her small SUV had a large yellow scrape and the door was dented. She again declined to speak with KSBY.
Next door, Kasey Monreal says her mother thought she saw the young girl fairly recently, but her home security footage told a different story.
“She thought that when she first said, 'Oh, I think I saw her just recently',” Monreal said, when referencing a conversation with her mother. She said, looking back, it had been longer since the girl was seen on the surveillance footage.
Kasey says CPS and authorities have been at the home for the past few days, with investigators collecting surveillance footage from neighbors in the area.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office confirms the last verified contact with Melodee, so far, was about a year ago.

“Our investigation into the, this at-risk missing juvenile, Melodee, began on Tuesday, Oct. 14, when deputies were notified by a school administrator that they hadn't seen or heard from a student in approximately a year,” said sheriff’s PIO Raquel Zick.
A notice sent out by the Lompoc Unified School District on Thursday confirmed Melodee "was most recently enrolled at Buena Vista Elementary School." The district reports staff became concerned after the girl had not been seen at school recently and “were concerned for her well-being.”
"She last attended a home schooling program approximately one year ago," Zick told KSBY.
The district says it’s partnering with law enforcement and asking for the school community’s help. Counseling and support for any students needing it are available.
As for the girl’s relatives, they say they have been cut off from Melodee for years. Melodee's aunt on her father's side says they found out about Melodee’s disappearance through Facebook.
“We haven't seen her in over four years due to the mother not allowing the family to see her,” said Lizabeth Meza, Melodee’s aunt. She describes her niece as being sweet and kind.

“She has a beautiful smile. She's very, very loving, very welcoming. She loved to be around her family,” Meza said, adding that Melodee's father died in a crash when she was just 6-months-old.
Other neighbors tell KSBY that Ashlee kept to herself. Holmes says she walks in the neighborhood often but never saw the girl. Another neighbor says he hasn’t seen Melodee in at least a year.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen Melodee or had any type of contact with her in the past year to contact the sheriff’s office at (805) 681-4150. Anonymous tips can be made by calling (805) 681-4171 or online at SBSheriff.org

So her father passed and it sounds as if he has family in the area who she didn't allow melodee to see. I'm guessing they are in the area. I wonder where her family is located.

If only an affidavit is required for home schooling, why is it continually said Ashlee hadn't been seen at school in over a year? Why would they expect to see her with homeschooling? Not that it isn't a good thing it's been reported because it is--it just doesn't make sense the way they are putting it as to that they haven't seen her.

I was just going to say that California has laws about checking in when you’re homeschooling. You found evidence.

I was hoping the family could give some clues, but it sounds like they are as clueless as the public.
